HISTORY, ARCHEOLOGY AND CULTUROLOGY DOI 10.36074/logos-28.05.2021.v2.49 THE CAUCASIAN GAMBIT OF WORLD EMPIRES AND EREKLE II Natsvaladze Mamuka Doctorate Sokhumi State University, Tbilisi GEORGIA Abstract. The current study is the first attempt to study the relations between Russian- Georgian relations within the context of international political processes, in particular, the Seven Years' War and the plan for the redistribution of Europe, the “Greek Project”. The world historical process of the second half of the XVIII century is of special importance for the proper assessment of the history of Georgia. Russian and Soviet historiography deliberately distorted the facts and events of the time leading to the improper assessment of the annexation of Georgia and the Caucasus. The European contacts of King Erekle II of Kartli- Kakheti were deliberately erased, and hence the Caucasus was declared a geostrategic space on Russian orbit and was artificially separated from the world historical processes. Therefore, a violent political act, the conquest of Georgia was disguised as an alliance corresponding with the idea of Christian common faith. The article analyzes the reasons the members of the European system of international relations did not like the existence of a powerful state in the Caucasus. The strategic policy directions of the Austrian Empire were also analyzed, making it obvious once again that the only ally of Erekle II was the Emperor of Austria. Introduction Process of the Georgian history can be obviously observed within the world political processes of the second half of the XVIII century.

George Sanikidze G. Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies, Ilia State University, Georgia BETWEEN EAST AND WEST: 19TH C. FRENCH PERCEPTION OF GEORGIA The 19th century is a turning point in the history of Georgia. After its incorporation into the Russian Empire radical changes took place in the country. Europeans have taken an ever increasing interest in Georgia, specifically in its capital Tbilisi. This article discusses a change in France’s perception of Georgia and its capital during the nineteenth century. The nineteenth century French memoirs and records on Georgia can be divided into three basic groups. These groups reflect changes in the political and economic situation in the East-West relations which had immediate implications for Georgia. The first period coincides with the “Great Game” during the Napoleonic wars when Georgia inadvertently became part of France’s Eastern policy. The French sources on Georgia are comprised of so- called Treaty of Finkenshtein between France and Persia, French newspapers (Le moniteur, Journal de l’Empire, Nouvelles étrangères...) reporting, and data on Georgia by French envoys in Persia (General Ange de Gardane (1766–1818), Amadée Jaubert (1779-1847), Joseph Rousseau (1780-1831), Camille Alphonse Trézel (1880-1860)...). The second period was a time of taking interest economically in Georgia and its capital Tbilisi, which by then (especially under the so-called preferential tariff policy) had become a transit trade route for European goods going East, Iran in particular. In this regard an invaluable source is the work by the first French consul in Tbilisi Chevalier Jacques François Gamba (1763-1833). Although the economic activity of France in the Caucasus relatively slowed after the preferential tariff was revoked (1831), many French still traveled to Georgia.

  • Georgian Royal Dynasties and Issues of Political Inheritance in Medieval Georgia
Free University Journal of Asian Studies G. NARIMANISHVILI GEORGE NARIMANISHVILI FREE UNIVERSITY OF TBILISI [email protected] GEORGIAN ROYAL DYNASTIES AND ISSUES OF POLITICAL INHERITANCE IN MEDIEVAL GEORGIA Abstract According to the Georgian historical sources, during the transfer of royal power, the issue of inheritance was of special importance. Royal power usually passed from father to son. If the throne could not be handed over directly, the daughter’s rights would come to the fore. In this regard, the legal status of a woman member of the royal family is interesting. According to Georgian historical sources, women not only had hereditary property rights but also the right to inherit royal authority. Exactly according to this right, the royal government in Georgia has been legitimately transferred several times. One of the clearest examples of this is the enthronement of Mirian in Kartli. After marrying Abeshura, the daughter of the king of Kartli Asfaguri, he became the king of Kartli. As a result, the royal government has been transferred from wife to husband. This is how the kingship of the Parnavazian-Chosroid dynasty started in Kartli. Thus, Mirian and his successors became the political heirs of the Parnavazians. In the 6th century, the Bagrationi family appeared in the Georgian political arena and became actively involved in the struggle for the Georgian royal throne. After a long confrontation, at the turn of the 11th century, Bagrat III became the king of the united Georgian Kingdom. He was the political heir to both dynasties. He received the title of the king of Georgians from his father, and the Chosroid inheritance was again transferred by the line of a woman, and from Gurandukht, it passed to Bagrat.

  • Branches of Bagrationi Royal House (Pdf
Additional information №7 Offshoot Branches of the Bagrationi Royal House in the 16th-18th centuries From the second half of the 15th century onwards Georgia witnessed various dynastic confrontations and internal political battles. While the Royal throne became weaker, the struggle between the Georgian princes to inherit their respective domains became even stronger. The dissolution of the kingdom and the subsequent separa- tion of estates led to the formation of offshoot branches within the Royal House of the Bagrationis. This political instability eventually led to the emergence of the Kartli, the Kakheti and the Imereti Bagrationi Royal dynasties. The negative economic and social situation which prevailed in the kingdoms of Kartli, Kakheti and Imereti, led to the establishment of several offshoot royal branches. Unfortunately, “provincial kings” played a regressive role which, apart from other reasons, facilitated the dissolution of the united Kingdom of Georgia. (Provincial Kings in XIV-XV Century Georgia by D. Ninidze, Tbilisi, 1995). After the collapse of the united Kingdom of Georgia various representatives of the Batonishvili from the Bagrationi family, who were present in independent kingdoms, started struggling for their rights. The main reason for this tense situation in the Royal House was complicated. Close and distant relatives of the Royal family, par- ticularly the offshoot branches of the Bagrationis, made claim for their respective rights and legal status. Although the rules of succession to the Royal throne were frequently violated, their representatives succeeded to obtain cer- tain legitimate rights. This resulted in the emergence of a new branch, besides numerous others of the Bagrationis. They made their political and economic claims, while the conditions for obtaining their relevant statuses no longer existed.

  • The Church of Georgia in War
HISTORIA I ŚWIAT, nr 8 (2019) ISSN 2299 - 2464 Mamuka TSURTSUMIA (Tbilisi State University, Georgia) The Church of Georgia in War https://doi.org/10.34739/his.2019.08.08 Abstract: In Western Europe the Church as an institution was integrated into the military system and was obliged to serve the monarchy. Apart from performing vassal duties, the Latin clergy frequently participated in military actions. Although the Church laws forbade clergymen to shed blood, there were many examples of the violation of this rule. The attitude of the Orthodox Church in the Byzantine Empire concerning the possible participation of the clergy in war differed significantly from that of Latin Europe. The Byzantine priesthood did not become involved in military actions. The Greek Church possessed neither military units nor vassal commitment to the Empire. Despite a very close relationship with the Byzantine Church the attitude of the Georgian Church to the issue differs from that of Byzantium and is closer to the Western practice. The feudal organization of Georgia conditioned the social structure of the Georgian Church and its obligations before the monarchy. Despite the fact that the Georgian Church enjoyed many advantages, it had to take part in military campaigns. The upper circles of Georgian Church dignitaries were accustomed to both conducting military campaigns or taking part in the combat. In regard to military activities of clergy, Georgian law was much more lenient than Byzantine, and in the case of necessity, it even modified Greek legal norms. The conflict with the Christian canons was decided in favor of military necessity, and it was reflected in the legislation.

Romanov News Новости Романовых By Paul Kulikovsky №91 October 2015 Three Major Portraits of Emperor Alexander III in the Valentin Serov Exhibition The "star" among the many Valentin Alexandrovich Serov paintings in the newly opened exhibition in Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow is Emperor Alexander III. There are also many other Romanovs among these excellent portraits and perhaps the best ever portrait of Emperor Nicholas II. 7 October the exhibition was opened to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth. Valentin Serov (1865-1911) combined elements of the Russian school of realism with the legacy of classical and innovative contemporary Western European painting. He became one of the founders of Art Nouveau in Russia at the turn of the century. Valentin Serov was born in St. Petersburg on January 19, 1865, into a family that belonged to the artistic community. Serov’s father, Alexander, was a composer of German-English background. Young Valentin’s talent for drawing became apparent at an early age. Valentin’s father died when the boy was six and his mother decided to go to Paris, which at the time was the centre of art and the place of residence of Ilya Y. Repin, an artist she knew well. The renowned artist taught the boy painting. In 1875 the art patron Savva Mamontov invited Serov and his mother to settle in Abramtsevo outside Moscow, where Valentin again had a chance to study under Repin. In 1880 Serov entered the Academy of Art in St. Petersburg, where he was taught by Pavel Chistyakov, a Russian painter and teacher of art, who in older times had taught Vrubel, Surikov, Polenov and Repin.
