Abstract Elite Protestants were a very small group in Republican China, but they were surprisingly influential among the ranks of Chinese modernizers, with Sun Yatsen as the preeminent example. They represented one of the most significant fruits of Sino-Western cultural exchange in the early twentieth century and left a lasting mark on China, yet as a group they have been largely overlooked in histories of the period. This dissertation, therefore, restores these individuals to history at the same time that it probes a deeper affinity between Protestantism and modernity that helps to explain the rise of this group and their particular vision of a modern China. The first three chapters of this work provide the theoretical framework and necessary background for the study. To start, modernity is carefully defined and its affinity with Protestantism is analyzed in such areas as individualism, modern education, nationalism, democracy, civil society, women’s rights, and the nuclear family. Following this, the role of Protestant mission institutions in transmitting modern ideas and practices into China is examined, with a particular focus on mission schools. Lastly, data on a group of 479 elite Chinese Protestants is carefully analyzed to generate a profile of them as a nationwide group, and they are also compared with Protestant modernizers in other parts of the world at the time. The last three chapters of this project consist of three separate case studies of elite Chinese Protestants in the Republican era that demonstrate concretely the larger themes of this work. The first of these studies is on a woman named Wang Liming, who led the Women’s Christian Temperance Union for many years in China and was a leading advocate of women’s rights. The second is on a prominent church minister and activist educator named Liu Tingfang, who was instrumental in the early history of Yanjing University and edited the leading Protestant journal of the day. And the final chapter is on Zhang Boling, founder of the renowned Nankai Middle School and Nankai University, as well as a prominent lay leader in the Young Men’s Christian Association. In closing, the conclusion explores the question of Protestants and modernity in contemporary China. This not only included the library resources and support staff at my home institution, the University of Alberta, but other schools as well. Martha Smalley at the Yale Divinity School Library was always supportive in facilitating my use of Yale’s impressive resources, and Joan Duffy in Special Collections there went out of her way on numerous occasions to assist me in locating needed materials. At the Missionary Research Library in New York, Michael Boddy helped me to mine a very rich collection, the most important part for me being the personal papers of Liu Tingfang. At Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, I located a very useful source on Zhang Boling and Nankai University. Finally, with the guidance of Dagmar Getz I found many more valuable documents on Zhang Boling during a trip to the YMCA archives at the University of Minnesota. The following pages, written as and when they could be in the scant leisure that it was possible to snatch from the demands of other work, are offered in the hope that their perusal may deepen interest in the work of B.M.S. Medical Missions. The very fact that the Auxiliary no longer exists as a specific branch of the Society may be held to constitute one reason why its inspiring story should be recorded ere the ceaseless march of events has caused it to be forgotten. A greater reason may be found in the character of the service which here stands revealed. No finer heroism is to be found anywhere than that exhibited by the lives of mission­ ary doctors and nurses, and for the sake of the younger generation in particular, it deserves to be told. A still further reason may be traced in the need, increasingly apparent, to safeguard the dis­ tinctive work of Medical Missions from being lost sight of in the more general presentation of the missionary enterprise which has become customary of recent years. Xu Associate Professor Rania Huntington, University of Wisconsin at Madison Abstract From a comparative standpoint, the American Protestant missionary enterprise in China was built on a paradox in cross-cultural encounters. In order to convert the Chinese—whose religion they rejected—American missionaries adopted strategies of assimilation (e.g. learning Chinese and associating with the Chinese) to facilitate their work. My dissertation explores how American Protestant missionaries negotiated the rejection-assimilation paradox involved in their missionary work and forged a cultural identification with China in their English novels set in China between the late Qing and 1930. I argue that the missionaries’ novelistic expression of that identification was influenced by many factors: their targeted audience, their motives, their work, and their perceptions of the missionary enterprise, cultural difference, and their own missionary identity. Hence, missionary novels may not necessarily be about conversion, the missionaries’ primary objective but one that suggests their resistance to Chinese culture, or at least its religion. Instead, the missionary novels I study culminate in a non-conversion theme that problematizes the possibility of cultural assimilation and identification over ineradicable racial and cultural differences.

In order to ensure competitive advantage, they must be able to promote high levels of professional performance. This research is part of this theme and aims to analyze how the job characteristics, professional knowledge, skills, competencies, training and work engagement influence the job evaluation and, consequently, the performance of employees of six public hospitals, China. The sample consists of 546 subjects aged between 21 and 58 years (M = 37.9; SD = 8.73), with the majority being females (55.5%). For the collection of data, such scales were used as the Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS), the Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Personal Characteristics Scale (KSAOS), the Competencies and Training Scale (CTS) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). The results obtained show that the job characteristics, the professional knowledge, the skills, the training and the work engagement influence the job evaluation. It was also found that the male respondents, those belonging to the older age group, those with higher academic qualifications and those with higher positions present higher average performance in all dimensions under study.

Mission­ aries' faults there are in plenty, easily discovered and described, but the virtues are there also, and, both for the student as well as for the critic of missions, a little honest research in this latter direction will not be time wasted.

It dramatically restructured Chinese society and created an authoritarian state that remains the most important player in shaping the country’s development today. Scholars writing to explain the success of the revolution began with trying to uncover factors outside of the party that helped to bring it to power, but have increasingly emphasized the ability of party organizations and their members to direct society to follow the CCP’s agendas as the decisive factor behind the party’s victory. Despite highlighting the role played by CCP members and the larger party organization in the success of the revolution studies have done little to examine how ordinary individuals got involved in the CCP at different stages and locations. Nor have scholars analyzed in depth the process of how the CCP molded millions of mostly rural people who joined it from the 1920s to the 40s into a disciplined force to seize control of China. Through a study of the CCP’s revolution in two counties of Jiaodong, a region of Shandong province in eastern China during this period my dissertation explores this process by focusing on their local party members.

The foreigners’ rights to live, preach, work and trade in China extracted by the ‘unequal treaties’ in the nineteenth century were challenged by an increasingly powerful nationalist movement, led by the Kuomintang, which was bolstered by Soviet support. The Chinese began a major attack on British interests in June 1925 in South China and continued the attack as the Kuomintang marched upward to the Yangtze River, where much of British trade was centred.

Aj preto býva často označovaná za cirkev slúžiacu režimu. No nie je to celkom tak. Podmienky, historické a politické pozadie jej vzniku sú veľmi kompli- kované. V článku sa autorky usilujú ukázať tento proces ako súčasť širšej problematiky, aj ako súčasť snahy čínskych kresťanských kruhov o samotné prežitie kresťanstva v Číne. Since its conception, the Three-Self Church had received harsh criticism from the Western Christian world as well as from leaders of many independent Chinese churches. For instance: Wang Mingdao (1900–1991), the founder of »Christian Churchs in Christ« (or Christian Tabernacle, ), denounced Wu Yaozong (»Wu Yao-tsung«, 1890–1979), the founder of the Three-Self Patriotic Movement and his fellow clergies of being »unbelievers«, and refused to take part 56 SOS 12 · 1 (2013) in the Three-Self Patriotic Movement.
