Wisconsin Broadcaster | June 2015 27 FROM THE JACOBS MEDIA TEAM AS PART OF THE WBA’S DIGITAL HOTLINE WITH JACOBS MEDIA How to Socially Target Your Audience

One of the common questions Every station—whether it’s in Milwaukee or we’re asked at conferences and Menomonie—has limited resources, whether personnel, broadcast groups is how to financial resources, or both. identify the social media There are two very simple ways to make these social decisions that can produce benefits in training and platforms most important and audience engagement: Fred Jacobs relevant to your audience. Use Our Research The overall data is compiled across North America and is massive in scope. It is composed of 41,600+ respondents. So even though they were produced with a sample of radio station databases, they apply to TV, newspapers, or any medium. This chart to the left, for the total sample, is a starting point, showing you the total sample’s “cume” when it comes to social. That means the sites they’ve signed up for. But on the right, is their “time spent engaging,” the places they go on a daily basis or more often. The reason that Facebook is so essential is that of those with a social media profile anywhere, more than 90% are on Facebook. And of them, nearly three-fourths show up daily to post, share, or lurk. A “Facebook First” point of view is important for every radio and TV brand. But what about “secondary social sites” like Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, or even Snapchat? Our surveys break down social media profiles by format, gender, and generation, making it simple for any TV or radio station to make smarter assessments about where to deploy resources and expertise. The chart to the left, for Millennials, depicts a very different profile for social media usage and engagement. Daily engagement with Facebook is lower with Millen- nials. It is still the top social site, and it commands the most regular usage. A Facebook strategy is essential for this audience. But so is a plan for Instagram (in particular), as well as Twitter and Snapchat. These consumers pick their social platform of choice. For broadcasters who truly wish to connect with them, it requires a multi-phase strategy to cover these very different social platforms. At Jacobs Media, we have these charts ready to go for WBA members, cross-tabulated by format, gender, age, generation, and other dimensions. If you let us know the way you’d like to see it, we’d be more than happy to send you the right chart, and then speak >

Wisconsin Broadcaster | June 2015 29 WBA Foundation Report 2015 Walker Broadcast Walker Broadcast Management Institute Management The 2016 Walker Broadcast Management Institute will be held April 26-28. We’d love to see you there. Institute Adds Ten More Graduates

Bringing the Total Number of Graduates to 111 The 2015 Walker Broadcast Management Institute, held April 21-23, was a success with 30 broadcasters taking part. The Institute—the first of its kind sponsored by a state broadcasters association—was held on the campus of the University of Wisconsin–Madison in conjunction with the UW School of Business. We are proud to have ten more graduates this year from the three-year module, bringing our total number of graduates up to 111 since the Institute began in 1998. This year’s three-day Management Institute spent full days on the following topics: • Day 1 featured Creativity with Robert Shaver; • Day 2 featured Managing Your Stress Before It Manages You along with How To Spring the Time Trap with Deborah Spring Laurel; and • Day 3 featured Marketing with Linda Gorchels. On Tuesday night the group enjoyed a casual dinner out at nearby Porta Bella Restaurant. On Wednesday evening, attendees, along with several guests from the WBA Boards enjoyed a reception and dinner at the UW’s state-of-the-art Fluno Center, followed by an energetic and informative presen- tation by Steven Rick. Steven is the Chief Economist for CUNA Mutual Group in Madison. He also holds a senior lecturer position with the Economics Department at the University of Wisconsin where he teaches the courses in money and banking, and macroeco- nomics. As always, a special highlight of the event was when this year’s Management Institute graduates of the three-year module were also recognized with the traditional leather briefcase. As always, special thanks, to Joan Gillman. Joan has been, and continues to be, an integral part of the Institute; she has worked with us since the program’s inception when she was the director of the Small Business Development Center at UW-Madison. Joan has since “retired” (she is now Director of Industry Relations, Emeritus, School of Business, UW-Madison), but fortunately for us she likes us and is willing to continue to work with us on the program, securing top-notch programs and speakers each year.
