( Doc. incluído) OP ART= OPTICAL ART TASK 1. READING AND UNDERSTANDING What is Op Art? Op Art, short for OPTICAL ART, is a style of visual art that uses optical illusions. Op Art works of art (obras de arte) are abstract, and mainly created in black and white. Typically, they give the impression of movement, hidden images, flashing and vibrating patterns. When does OP ART start? Op art started in the 1960s Who started Op Art? It started with the Hungarian (húngaro) artist VICTOR VASARELY. Bridget Riley, and another artist called Jesús Rafael Soto were some of the most important op artists. What are the characteristics of op art? The most outstanding characteristics of op art are: • It uses simple geometric figures that combined, form more complex figures. • Its main objective is to give us visual effects that simulate that they have movement. • It intends to fool the eye ( intenta engañar nuestra visión de la obra de arte) TASK 2. LE MOUVEMENT - KINETIC ART INTO THE 21ST CENTURY In 1950s France, there was an active interaction and artistic exchange between the country’s capital and South America. Vasarely and many Alexander Calder put it so beautifully when he said: “Just as one composes colors, or forms, of the Grupo Madí artists had an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires in 1957 so one can compose motions.” that was extremely influential upon younger generation avant-garde artists. Many South Americans, such as the triumvirate of Venezuelan Kinetic Masters & Their Legacy is comprised of a selection of works created by South American artists ranging from the 1950s to the present day. In showing contemporary cinetismo–Jesús Rafael Soto, Carlos Cruz-Diez, pieces alongside mid-century modern work, our exhibition provides an account of and Alejandro Otero—settled in Paris, amongst the trajectory of varied techniques, theoretical approaches, and materials that have a number of other artists from Argentina, Brazil, evolved across the legacy of the field of Kinetic Art. Venezuela, and Uruguay, who exhibited at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles.

Okay, I feel like this is the Academy Awards Ceremony, but I assure you I am not Johnny Carson. Now we are here to listen to Victor Vasarely in what will undoubtedly be a rather sterling speech. There are however (break in audio) HERBERT RICKMAN — urban architecture. Many of the cities of Europe today are reflective, in the best sense, of his influence, so, I am proud to read this message from the mayor and then, I want to make a presentation to Victor Vasarely. It reads, “To all in attendance, Guggenheim Museum, greetings. On behalf of the City of New York, I salute our distinguished visitor from France, the world- renowned artist, Victor Vasarely. The enduring impact of Vasarely, the father of optical art, lives in the beauty [00:01:00] and power of shape, light, color, and movement, the stuff of which light itself is made. How fortunate we New Yorkers are that Victor Vasarely is sharing his vision and genius with us once more. While I cannot join you this evening, I am very much with you in the vibrant spirit of this occasion. Y9 Graphics: Op Art Does this picture make your eyes go funny? Don't worry it's not you – it's Op art! Op art is short for 'optical art'. The word optical is used to describe things that relate to how we see. Have you seen an optical Illusion before? Op art works in a similar way. Artists use shapes, colours and patterns in special ways to create images that look as if they are moving or blurring. Op art started in the 1960s and the painting here is by Bridget Riley who is one of the main op artists. What shapes can you see in the Some op artists made artworks picture below? It is by an Op artist that don't just look as if they are called Victor Vasarely. moving – they actually ARE aAlong with Bridget Riley and moving! Art that moves is another artist called Jesus Rafael sometimes called kinetic art. Soto were three of the most important Op artists. The artwork below is by an artist called Julio Le Parc who often created mobiles. To make this work he has hung lots of tiny bits of metal onto almost invisible suspended threads. These bits of metal jiggle and move slightly with any breeze, and their shadows on the white background also jiggle and move. Can you see the shadows? There are also some abstract artists who don't always make op artworks but sometimes slip into it. This picture by Frank Stella uses bright and jazzy colours that create a buzzy effect on our eyes.

Extensive international travel by artists from the Nordic regions Clear Form during the post-war period enabled them to establish contacts with key con- temporary figures first in Berlin and then Paris. Eventually the Nordic artists also helped to shape the flow of events. In return, international exhibitions of Cutting Edges: concrete art also traveled to the Nordic capitals, such as in Klar Form (Clear Nordic Concrete Art from the Erling Neby Collection Form) in 1952 and Konkret Realisme (Concrete Realism) in 1956. opens at Scandinavia House this fall. A dedication to concrete art united the Nordic artists in many ways, and throughout the years there have been many joint efforts to focus on this shared aesthetic through various group exhibitions, such as Nordic Concrete By Karin Hellandsjø HIS FALL, SCANDINAVIA HOUSE will present an exhibition of paintings, T drawings and sculpture never before seen in the United States. Joined under the term “Concrete Art,” the works from all five Nordic countries span more than 70 years. All are from the inter- nationally known collection of Norway’s Erling Neby. But what is concrete art? The term “concrete art” was first used in 1929, launched by the Dutch artists Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian. It was devised to avoid the ambiguity inherent in the word “abstract,” and was intended to emphasize the fact that forms and colors were already “concrete realities” in themselves, not needing to refer to anything outside a specific work of art. Over the years, internationally recognized artists such as Victor Vasarely, Frank Stella and Josef Albers became prominent exponents.

JESUS RAFAEL SOTO b. 1923, Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela d. 2005, Paris, France “… in order to achieve abstraction, I thought it was important to find a graphic system that would allow me to codify a reality rather than represent it.” One of the most important kinetic artists of the 20th century, Jesús Rafael Soto began his artistic career at a very young age, painting posters for movie theaters in his hometown of Ciudad Bolívar. In 1942, he received a scholarship to study art and art history at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas in Caracas, where he met fellow students Carlos Cruz-Diez, Mercedes Pardo, Omar Carreño, and Alejandro Otero. During these studies, he began making paintings inflected with Cubism. He noted, “For me, Cubism was an exercise in construction, in the ordering a planes, a tool that helped me to translate the tropical light.” In Caracas, he regularly attended meetings and discussions at the Taller Libre de Art (Open Air Studio), an institution sponsored by the Ministry of Education, in which intellectuals, critics, and artists debated current avant- garde ideas from Europe and Latin America; his first solo exhibition was held at the Taller in 1949. In 1947, Soto was invited to direct the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Maracaibo, where he remained until 1950. That year, he received a grant to travel to France; he settled in Paris, where he found a dynamic community of artists associated with the Salon des Realités Nouvelles and the Galerie Denise René, including Yaacov Agam, Jean Tinguely, Victor Vasarely. He also rejoined many of his friends from school, including Otero and Pardo.

Works in the exhibit are on loan from the collection of the Herakleidon Museum, Athens, Greece, and are supplemented by selections from the colle ctions of the World Chess Hall of Fame and Dr. Jeanne and Rex Sinquefield. Utilizing geometric shapes and colorful graphics, many of Vasarely’s works are compelling illusions of spatial depth. He credits his work to a wide range of influences, including Bauhaus design principles, Wassily Kandinsky, and Constructivism. After settling in Paris in 1930, Vasarely worked as a graphic artist while creating many proto - Op Art works. Brodsky This essay was previously published to accompany the exhibition A Constant Quest, at Galeria Nara Roesler | São Paulo (oct. 10th - dec. 12th, 2013). During the course of six decades, Julio Le Parc has consistently sought to redefine the very nature of the art experience, pre- cipitating what he calls ‘disturbances in the artistic system’. In so doing, he has played with the viewers’ sensory experiences and given spectators an active role. With fellow members of the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV)—an artist collec- tive Le Parc established with Horacio García Rossi, Francisco Sobrino, François Morellet, Joël Stein, and Jean-Pierre Vasarely (Yvaral) in Paris in 1960—Le Parc generated direct encounters with the public, while undermining what they considered the artificial constraints of institutional frameworks.1 As their manifesto Assez de mystifications [“Enough Mystifications”, Paris, 1961] announced, the group’s intention was to find ways to confront the public with artwork outside the museum setting by intervening in urban spaces with subversive games, politically charged flyers, and playful questionnaires.2 Through such strategies, Le Parc and GRAV turned spectators into par- ticipants with an increased self-awareness, both achieving a form of social leveling and anticipating some of the sociopoliti- cal collaborative and relational strategies that have proliferated over the past two decades.

1 “Op Art,” short for Optical Art, was coined by Time Magazine in a 1964 review of the exhibition Julian Stanczak: Optical Paintings at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York City. Arguably the father of this innovative and futuristic movement was actually the Hungarian-French artist Victor Vasarely, who had been experimenting with the rhythm of colors and shapes for decades. Born in 1906, in Pecs, Hungary, Vasarely initially studied medicine, then turned his focus to art. His love of abstraction began in 1929-30 at the prestigious Mühely Academy in Budapest—a center for the new influential Bauhaus movement of modern design that was spreading throughout Europe. Immediately upon graduation, Vasarely had a solo exhibition at the Kovaks Akos Gallery in Budapest and soon after relocated to Paris to work in graphic design at the Havas advertising agency. For the next decade, in addition to creating some figural work and experimenting in the Surrealist movement, he began playing with concepts that would go on to be the basis of his signature artistic creations—optical illusions. Photographer unknown Through his exploration of composition, color, light, medium, dimensionality, Victor Vasarely Poses with his Art and linear networks, Vasarely created his well-known zebra, tiger, and, Date unknown most apropos, his checkerboard patterning in his “Graphic Period” (1929- Collection of the Vasarely 1946). Though it is not discussed whether he was a chess player, Vasarely Foundation began incorporating chess imagery—boards, crowns, and pieces—into his chess-related artworks. Through the arrangement of perpendicular line, Vasarely manipulated shape and the placement of color to create a rhythm or visual vibration.

He only had a few friends growing up. His best friend, Emile Zola, became a famous writer. Paul never forgot the time he spent roaming the countryside with Emile. The two friends encouraged each other throughout their lives. Education Paul Cezanne, 1861 Even though Paul’s father didn’t think much of artists, he did allow his son to take drawing lessons and even paint murals on the walls of their home. Paul studied law for 3 years before going to Paris to pursue a career in art. The Oath of Horatii, Jacques Louis David, 1784 Paul moved into a studio filled with young artists who were usually happy to paint in the accepted style of the day. They used realism and dark backgrounds in order to please members of the Salon who would display their paintings at the most important art show in France. So Paul gave it a try… …but he was too imaginative and restless to keep trying to please the Salon.

Victor Vasarely: Op Art Master Opening at the Woodson Art Museum WAUSAU , WISCONSIN : An exhibition of artwork by the world-renowned father of the Op Art movement, Victor Vasarely, opens at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum on Saturday, December 1. “Victor Vasarely: Op Art Master,” an exhibition from the collection of Herakleidon Museum in Athens, Greece, comprises more than 150 serigraphs, lithographs, and gouache paintings – designed to engage the mind and eye. Vasarely’s bold monochromatic and vividly colorful, geometric artworks often seem to swell, recede, undulate, and pulsate. To create this optical trickery – illusions of mass and motion that appear to emanate from his two- dimensional artwork – Vasarely experimented with color, background, geometric combinations, and materials as he sought contrast, distorted grids, and played with perspective.
