Both centers are recognized by the Italian State and internationally with the formal legal status of Scientific Institutes for Clinical Research. In an email to Catholic News Service Feb. 3, the Vatican press office confirmed a report that appeared in the Chinese newspaper The Global Times, which said that since Jan. 27, the Vatican has sent 600,000-700,000 protective masks to China. “The masks are destined to the provinces of Hubei, Zhejiang and Fujian,” the press office told CNS. “It is a joint initiative of the Office of Papal Charities and the Chinese Church in Italy, in collaboration with the Vatican pharmacy.” According to the Global Times report, Chinese Father Vincenzo Han Duo, vice rector of Rome’s Pontifical Urbanian College, said the donation was made possible with the help of Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the papal almoner. The masks were paid for by the Vatican and Chinese Christian communities in Italy, while airline companies, including China Southern Airlines, provided free shipment, the report said. “I hope the supplies could reach where they are needed as soon as possible, so that people who are suffering the disease could feel the concern from the Holy See. The whole world is standing together to fight the virus,” Father Han told The Global Times. During his Sunday Angelus address Jan. 26, Pope Francis expressed condolences to the victims of the virus and his support for efforts to fight its spread. “I wish to be close to and pray for the people who are sick because of the virus that has spread through China,” the pope said.

It has laid bare the inequities and injustices that threaten people’s well-being, safety, and lives, and exacerbated an interconnected set of crises – economic, ecological, political, social – that disproportionately impact the poor and most vulnerable. As we move through recovery, we must ensure the cures for the immediate crises are stepping- stones to a more just, inclusive, and integrated set of systems, and that a global, regenerative healing takes place to transform societies and our planet. In March 2020, Pope Francis established the Vatican COVID-19 Commission as a novel, rapid response to the pandemic. Inspired by the teachings of Laudato Si’ and Fratelli Tutti, the Commission enacts the Pope’s call to ‘prepare the future’ through science, theological reflection, and deep collaboration while prioritizing the least among us. Only he can save us. And no one else. Even less modern “magicians” with their improbable tarot card prophecies who bewitch and delude men and women today. It was on the name of Jesus (cf. Acts 4:1-12) that Pope Francis focused his reflection on Friday morning, 5 April, in the Octave of Easter, at Mass in the Chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae. Present were the Sediari pontifici (the pontifical chair-bearers) and employees and religious of the St John of God Brothers who work at the Vatican Pharmacy. Pope Francis explained that “Peter reveals a truth when he says: 'by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth'. Because he answers inspired by the Holy Spirit”. In fact we, he continued, “cannot profess Jesus, we cannot speak of Jesus, we cannot say anything about Jesus without the Holy Spirit”. It is the Holy Spirit himself “who urges us to profess Jesus or to talk about Jesus or to have trust in Jesus”. And is it Jesus himself who is beside us “on our journey through life, always”. The Pope then recounted a personal experience linked to his memory of a man, the father of eight, who worked for 30 years in the Archiepiscopal Curia of Buenos Aires. “Before going out, 2 before going to do any of the things he had to do”, the Holy Father said, “he would whisper to himself: 'Jesus!'.

    Pope sets up new commission to confront coronavirus challenges and aftermath Pope Francis created a new commission that will confront the challenges the world is facing in battling the coronavirus pandemic and what it will inevitably face in its aftermath, the Vatican announced In a statement published April 15, the Vatican said the goal of the commission, which will be led by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, is “to express the Church’s concern and love for the entire human family in the face of the of COVID-19 pandemic.” The dicastery will work with other Vatican offices to coordinate the work, which includes “an analysis and a reflection on the socioeconomic and culture challenges of the future and proposed guidelines to address them,” the Vatican said. The commission is divided into five working groups focused on a specific aspect of the pandemic and has met twice with the pope to discuss ways it can help local churches, especially in poor areas, Cardinal Peter Turkson, prefect of the dicastery, said in an interview with Vatican News published shortly after the announcement. “The pope is convinced that we are living through an epochal change and he is reflecting on what will follow the crisis, on the economic and social consequences of the pandemic, on what we will have to face and, above all, on how the Church can offer itself as a safe point of reference to the world lost in the face of an unexpected event,” Cardinal Turkson said. The commission’s first working group, which is dedicated to “listening and supporting local churches,” will work in cooperation with Caritas Internationalis, as well as the office of the papal almoner, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Vatican pharmacy.

    Pope signs new measures to guarantee financial transparency in Vatican VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI has instituted a new agency to monitor all Vatican financial operations and make sure they meet international norms against money-laundering and the financing of terrorism. The pope issued an apostolic letter Dec. 30 that established the Financial Information Authority as an independent agency to oversee the monetary and commercial activities of all Vatican-related institutions, including the Vatican bank. At the same time, the Vatican promulgated a detailed new law that defined financial crimes and established penalties – including possible jail time – for their violation. The list of transgressions includes corruption, market manipulation, fraud and virtually any activity that facilitates or provides funding to acts of terrorism. The new law, which reflects the latest European Union regulations, takes effect April 1. The pope’s brief apostolic letter said the Vatican fully supported the international community’s efforts to coordinate a response to financial crimes, which often involve more than one country. “In our age of increasing globalization, peace is unfortunately threatened by many factors, including an improper use of the market and the economy, and the terrible and destructive violence perpetrated by terrorism, which causes death, suffering, hatred and social instability,” the pope said. The creation of such an oversight agency is unprecedented at the Vatican, where several departments have operated with some degree of financial independence for decades or centuries. The Vatican spokesman, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, described the move as a courageous step that reflects the moral requirement of “transparency, honesty and responsibility” in the Vatican’s operations.
