The sold-out event was headlined by Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki, Milos Raonic and Lleyton Hewitt, who served up the fun with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at the Rod Laver Arena Spectacular. The Ninja-themed event, hosted by Nickelodeon’s Rahart Adams, was a culmination of ballkids, dancers, acrobats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the world’s best tennis players. Ahead of his 20th Australian Open campaign, Lleyton Hewitt flexed his super skills when he played against four young players from the audience, showcasing exactly what Kids Tennis Day was about. “Kids Tennis Day is about engaging, introducing and educating the next generation about tennis and the Australian Open in a fun, relaxed way,” Hewitt said. “I was fortunate enough to be involved in the game at a young age, receiving coaching, playing at a club and visiting the Australian Open every year. “I made a point of spending time around the practice courts watching the big names go about their business. It was fun and enjoyable and that is the best way for parents to approach their children playing, by making sure they enjoy themselves as it will help them to learn easily.” On the outside courts, kids and families were able to meet their favourite Nickelodeon characters – SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and PAW Patrol, play ANZ Tennis Hot Shots with qualified coaches; see Nickelodeon stage shows; watch players practice; and visit Grand Slam Oval ahead of the tournament’s first day on Monday. From Monday, 18 January, families will be able to enjoy the free kids’ playground “Kids’ World” as part of the Australian Open Festival at Birrarung Marr. The playground will include giant Nickelodeon inflatable playgrounds, meet and greets with characters such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Nickelodeon’s signature slime at the world famous Slime Lab. Kids can also download the All Stars Tennis App to test their tennis skills against characters such as SpongeBob SquarePants and climb the All Stars Tennis ranks from Rookie to World Champion. OLD EL PASO MAKES SOME NOISE FOR FOODBANK AUSTRALIA MELBOURNE (MARCH 2021) – Old El Paso™ and the Nick Kyrgios Foundation teamed up to ‘Make Some Noise for Australia’, supporting our local tennis players whilst also raising 25,000 meal kit donations to Foodbank Australia to help feed vulnerable families across Australia. Every time an Aussie player hit the court during the three-week summer series of tennis events including the season’s opening tournament in Melbourne Park, Old El Paso and the NK Foundation donated 100 meal kits to Foodbank Australia. This donation was then tripled to 300 if our Aussie stars won their match. Fans were also encouraged to support with every share on Instagram from a fan equalling an extra meal kit donation. The ‘Make Some noise for Australia’ campaign follows the successful #MessFreeChallenge launched by Old El Paso and Nick Kyrgios in September 2020. Unveiling to his 1.4 million Instagram followers, Kyrgios starred in a video to launch his #MessFreeChallenge, showing how easy it is to play tennis one-handed whilst eating an Old El Paso Tortilla PocketTM. In addition, for every share of Nick’s video via Instagram, Old El Paso donated one additional meal kit to Foodbank Australia. Kyrgios then challenged Aussie tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt to take up the #MessFreeChallenge in Australia and onwards to British icon Andy Murray to take it global and from there the competition soared with other professional sports people and a constellation of tennis stars joining from 15 countries. The initiative resulted in more than 100,000 Mexican meal-kit donations for food banks around the globe, including 20,000 meal kits to Foodbank Australia delivered in January 2021.

We must stress that although there is no charge, and you can ask for a ground pass for a partner to come with you to both the morning teas, if they want to sit in the stand with you, you must pay for those tickets. The cut off date for requests is 29th September and forms, with or without extra ticket payments MUST be returned to Angela before then. Every year since we have been doing this there have been last minute requests….but no late applications will be accepted this year. In the past the return forms have gone to Tennis Auckland but now, although payment is still made out to Tennis Auckland they need to be sent to Angela. DON’T leave it till the last days.

Ben Kibler, MD Introduction In the last two decades, physical training and competitive opportunities have increased dramatically in junior, collegiate and professional tennis. This arose due to a multitude of factors, but much of it has stemmed from an increase in knowledge and understanding of scientifically based training programs focused on improving performance. As this focus on performance has increased, the area of recovery has received relatively limited focus. Recovery is a multi-faceted paradigm focusing on recovery from training—session to session, day to day and week to week. Recovery is also vitally important during training as well as in competition between matches and between days during multi-day tournaments. As more information is needed in the area of tennis specific recovery, the Sport Science Committee of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) sponsored an extensive evidence-based review of the available literature related to eight distinct areas of tennis-specific recovery. In one unforget- table evening, we remembered how the Pete Sampras-Andre Agassi “rivalry” had long ago been scripted. The two men had met 31 times coming into this US Open quarterfinal, with Sampras winning 17 of those meetings, but none had ever been as closely contested or as per- fectly played out as this. Here was Sampras, the game’s supreme server and Agassi, its greatest returner, not only excelling at their respective strengths but at each others’ as well. For three hours and 33 minutes, each man played at a level that seemed impossible to sustain—and yet somehow, each did. No breaks of serve, four tie-breaks, countless thrills. In the wee hours of the morning, the 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory went to Sampras. There was no loser.
