If I didn’t use the occasion to tweak the typography a little bit, i wouldn’t be doing my job. Thanks to Jeff Wison for the outstanding New Release Info dancing kids drawing, originally created for the the Pizzafest T-shirts. That cat can draw... As you can recall from MP Days of Yore, Pizzafest was gonna be a big show and pizzafeed with participants getting a free shirt, but the venue got paranoid about security, costs escalated, band avail- abilities got shaky, and the event was cancelled. Fortunately, it was replaced by not one but two “Mutant Fest” type of events: Cincinnati, OH in August (hosted by Dave Spodie of The Connie Dungs) and Columbus, OH in October (hosted by Eddie of The Proms). The bottom line is this: if you wanna have pop-punk events to attend this summer, people need to Do It Yourself. Get out there and independently organize your own Mutant Fest-type of deal! It would seem that there would be enough people and bands in the NY/NJ/PA area and possibly also in the Pacific Northwest—in addition to room for shows in the heartland of the pop-punk world, the midwest. There are rumors of a possible Connie Dungs/Dirt Bike Annie mini-tour this summer, how great would it be to tie into that? It’s something for you The 40th Mutant Pop 7”er is now on the street! people in pop-punk bands to think about—make your own fun! • A Longitudinal Content Analysis of Feminist Themes in Punk Rock
ACT LIKE A PUNK, SING LIKE A FEMINIST: A LONGITUDINAL CONTENT ANALYSIS OF FEMINIST THEMES IN PUNK ROCK SONG LYRICS, 1970-2009 Lauren E. Levine Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2015 APPROVED: Koji Fuse, Major Professor Tracy Everbach, Committee Member Gwen Nisbett, Committee Member Cory Armstrong, Chair of the Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism Dorothy Bland, Dean of the Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism Costas Tsatsoulis, Interim Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Levine, Lauren. E. Act Like a Punk, Sing Like a Feminist: A Longitudinal Content Analysis of Feminist Themes in Punk Rock Song Lyrics, 1970-2009. Master of Arts (Journalism), May 2015, 104 pp., 6 tables, references, 123 titles. Punk rock music has long been labeled sexist as copious media-generated accounts and reports of the genre concentrate on male artists, hyper-masculine performances, and lyrics considered to be aggressive, sexist, and misogynist. However, scholars have rarely examined punk rock music longitudinally, focusing heavily on 1980s and 1990s manifestations of the genre. Furthermore, few systematic content analyses of feminist themes in punk rock song lyrics have been conducted. The present research is a longitudinal content analysis of lyrics of 600 punk rock songs released for four decades between 1970 and 2009 to examine the prevalence of and longitudinal shifts in antiestablishment themes, the prevalence of and longitudinal shifts in sexist themes relative to feminist themes, the prevalence of and longitudinal shifts in specific feminist branches, and what factors are related to feminism. Using top-rated albums retrieved from Sputnik Music’s “Best Punk Albums” charts, systematic random sampling was applied to select 50 songs for each combination of three gender types and four decades.

  • A Sociological Analysis of Christian Contemporary Music and Aural Piety
“FAITH COMES BY HEARING”: A SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF CHRISTIAN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC AND AURAL PIETY __________________________________________________________________ A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board __________________________________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Courtney Sorrell Tepera August 2017 Examining Committee Members: Lucy Bregman, Advisory Chair, TU Department of Religion Terry Rey, TU Department of Religion David Harrington Watt, TU Department of History Dustin Kidd, External Member, TU Department of Sociology © Copyright 2017 by Courtney Suzanne Sorrell Tepera ____________________________ All rights reserved iii ABSTRACT Over the past fifty years, Christian contemporary music has joined hymnody and psalmody as a major form of evangelical liturgical and devotional song. While the production and content of this genre have been explored by scholars, few studies have attended to the devotional use of the genre and its role in shaping the religious lives of American evangelicals. This project draws from several sets of data to address this matter: analysis of church-created worship music albums, listener testimonials on Christian radio websites, and focus group interviews of laity and clergy at four South Carolina churches. The data revealed that music is significant to their religious lives outside of church as a means of encountering God, managing emotions, and displaying spiritual capital. Inside churches, the music is used to create a sense of corporate identity that reinforces social bonds within the community and attracts newcomers. Drawing on the methodological framework of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice and his work on social distinction, I argue that American evangelicals who listen to Christian contemporary music are engaged in aural piety, a set of practices, attitudes, and ideas invested in music that structure and evoke the experience of the sacred.

  • Steven Bradley Partners with Porterhouse for Debut L.P
[email protected] STEVEN BRADLEY AND PORTERHOUSE RECORDS PARTNER FOR HIS DEBUT FULL-LENGTH “SUMMER BLISS AND AUTUMN TEARS” Porterhouse Records is pleased to announce joining forces with Steven Bradley to release his debut full-length recording entitled “Summer Bliss and Autumn Tears.” The album is now available worldwide. Having chosen to brand his music apart from his production career he explains “I wanted a clear distiction between my work as Steve Kravac the producer and that of my songwriting persona. While people know my output with bands like Less Than Jake, M.X.P.X., Blink 182 and Pepper this current undertaking has its own sound and path. I felt it needed some separation from where I’ve been in order to better understand where I’m going.” He describes the upcoming release as follows; “I knew I’d end up making a record that drew on a myriad of influences but I also knew that it would stand as its own thing. You can shift from the power-pop of Teenage Fanclub to the lap steel voicings of George Harrison in the same tune. Big Star was going to be in play, Neil Young had to be in play. While those influences pop up here and there, I think that what makes this record work is the thread of songs holds together” While Steven played the majority of instruments on the record himself, he called on a number of friends to help fill things out. Noteable contributors are Wayne Kramer (MC5), pedal steel master Greg Leisz (Matthew Sweet, Willie Nelson, Jackson Browne) and keyboardist Danny McGough (Tom Waits).
