  • In the 1940S Louisa Jane Bryer Used To
Louisa Jane Bryer, Missionary to China Submitted by Mary Leah de Zwart Louisa Jane Bryer, known by the family as “Cousin Louie” was my grandmother’s first cousin. Her visits to the family farm in the late 1940s were always exciting. Although I was too young at the time to have any memories of her, the stories she told about her thirty years as an Anglican missionary in China became part of family folklore. My cousins remembered Louie shuffling her way to church every Sunday and were convinced that her feet had been bound in China. She told my oldest brother that learning Chinese was very difficult, and that she had to take her bath in public so that the village people would not think she was evil (this seems hard to believe in retrospect). The kids would try to get her to say something naughty in Chinese (for a missionary) and once in a while she would indulge them by saying, “Bring me a glass of water” in Chinese, and then change the tones to mean, “Bring me a dog’s head”. The life experiences of Louisa Jane Bryer (1867-1958) capture how young, unmarried Victorian- era women could escape family bonds and expectations. In her long career as a missionary for the Church of England Zenana Missionary Society [CEZMS] Cousin Louie learned up to five Chinese languages, made at least twelve transoceanic crossings; escaped near death more than once, and died happily (so the story goes) eating cookies in her bathtub at the age of 91 in New Westminster, BC.1 Louisa Jane Bryer’s life started out in an ordinary way.

Copyright 1989 by Martha & Bill Reamy Printed in the U.S.A. Published 1989 by FAMILY LINE PUBLICATIONS INTRODUCTION Every effort has been made to achieve accuracy in this project, but interpreting the enumerator's hand-written material has posed problems. As an aid to deciphering many poorly written and misspelled names, the "Wood's Baltimore City Directory, 1861" was consulted. When an entry was found in the Directory where the first name and occupation agreed with the Census listing and the surname appears to be similar, the City Directory spelling was added in brackets in the text and added to the index. The original enumeration at the National Archives was consulted for all proofreading. The enumerator took great liberties in the spelling of surnames. Sometimes when an entry for a household carried over from one page to another the enumerator changed the spelling of the surname. We have retained both spellings in this book. Surnames were occasionally spelled phonetically, e.g. the name written as Knobloch in the Baltimore City Directory appears as Noblock in the census. The user is cautioned to check the index for all possible variations. In some sections it is obvious that the information was transcribed from the original record column by column rather than across the page, line by line, with frequent misalignment of the data on a particular line.

WOMEN’S WORK FOR WOMEN: WOMEN MISSIONARIES IN 19TH CENTURY CHINA A Paper presented to the EIGHTH WOMEN IN ASIA CONFERENCE 2005 Women's Caucus of the Asian Studies Association of Australia & The University of Technology, Sydney University of Technology, Sydney 26-28 September 2005 Ian Welch Australian National University © Ian Welch 2005 Reproduced on Project Canterbury, 2005 http://anglicanhistory.org Women’s Work for Women, by Ian Welch (2005) ABSTRACT Three young Australians, Annie Gordon and Nellie and Topsy Saunders, with eight English and Irish missionaries and family members, died in a massacre of British Anglican missionaries at Huashan, Fujian Province, China, on 1 August 1895. The Huashan Massacre was the most serious attack on British missionaries prior to the horrors of the Boxer Rebellion a few years later when thousands of Chinese Christians and more than two hundred foreign men, women and children of the missionary community were killed. The murder of the three women filled the Australian and overseas press at the time but their story is barely known today They chose a life of humanitarian service abroad rather than conform to the conservative and gender-biased world of the Australian 19th century evangelical Christian tradition. The paper focuses on their lives in the Gutian (Kucheng) and Ping Nang Districts of Fujian Province China from late 1892 to mid-1895. It considers the setting of their work, both geographical and economic, their on-the-job training, including language and socialization, and touches on the role and leadership provided by the CMS/CEZMS mission ‘mother’, Mrs. Louisa Smyly Stewart.

Robert Stewart was educated at Marlborough College, a private school in England, and took his Master of Arts (MA) degree at Trinity College, Dublin, after which he began a law course. Following a deep spiritual experience in London, he decided to offer to the Church Missionary Society for missionary service in China.1 There is no information about the early education of Louisa Smyly.2 Robert and Louisa had known each other since childhood.3 Robert’s proposal to Louisa was prosaic, telling her of his CMS appointment to China; and then asking, “Would you like to be a missionary” followed by “Would you go to China?” to which she replied, “Yes, I should”; and finally the question, “Will you go with me?”4 The Stewarts, with the Rev. Llewellyn Lloyd, arrived in Fuzhou in September 1876, not long after their marriage and became central figures in the history of the CMS, CEZMS and the Dublin University Fukien Mission in Fujian Province.

AMY OXLEY: LETTERS FROM CHINA An Australian Missionary Nurse of the Church Missionary Association of New South Wales, Fujian Province, China 1895-c1920 Ian Welch Australian National University Canberra, Australia ANU Missionary History Archives Project Division of Pacific and Asian History Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies Australian National University, Canberra ACT 0200 © Ian Welch and Ellen Hope 2004 Published online through http://anglicanhistory.org 2006 INTRODUCTION The letters in this book were written by Amy Oxley Wilkinson, a missionary of the Anglican Church Missionary Association (later Church Missionary Society) of New South Wales. Amy took the photographs of China using a camera sent by her cousin, Isabel Hope of Victoria. Amy Oxley was born at ‘Kirkham’, a property near Camden, New South Wales, in 1868. She trained as a nurse at the Children’s Hospital, Glebe Point, Sydney. She was the granddaughter of John Oxley, Surveyor-General of the Colony of New South Wales. Her father was John Norton Oxley and her mother was Harriett Hassall. John Oxley established a property, ‘Kirkham’, near Camden, New South Wales. Harriet’s father was the Rev. Thomas Hassall of ‘Denbigh’, Cobbity, New South Wales. Cobbity is in the same general part of New South Wales as Camden, i.e. southwest of Sydney. Thomas Hassall is believed to have been the prime mover behind the introduction of the Sunday School movement to Australia. His father was Roland Hassall, one of the first missionaries of the London Missionary Society who sent to Tahiti on the vessel Duff in 1776. Harriett Hassall-Oxley’s mother was Ann Marsden, daughter of the Rev.
