  • Costa Cruises: Big News for Sicily and Sardinia
COSTA CRUISES: BIG NEWS FOR SICILY AND SARDINIA October 11, 2019 From May 2020, the new Costa Smeralda flagship will be calling at Cagliari once a week during the summer and Palermo in winter. Costa Pacifica will also be visiting Catania during summer 2020. Genoa, October 11, 2019 – Costa Cruises announces big changes intended to further increase the company's presence in Sardinia and Sicily. The first concerns Costa Smeralda, the new flagship currently nearing completion at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland. During the 2020 summer season, from May 28 to September 24, Costa Smeralda will be in Cagliari every Thursday, from 7.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., making a total of 18 calls. The one-week itinerary will include Savona (Saturday), Marseilles (Sunday), Barcelona (Monday), Palma de Mallorca (Tuesday), Cagliari (Thursday) and Civitavecchia (Friday). From October 1, 2020 to April 8, 2021, it will be Palermo's turn to welcome Costa Smeralda every Thursday, from 7.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., for a total of 28 calls. The itinerary will remain unchanged, with Palermo replacing Cagliari. In addition to Costa Smeralda, Costa Diadema will also be calling at Palermo every Tuesday from April to the end of September 2020, while during the winter of 2020/21, Costa Fortuna will arrive every Friday. Costa's calls in Palermo from January 2020 to April 2021 will therefore increase to 77 in total. The second development relates instead to Costa Pacifica. Florida’s Cruise Industry Statewide Perspective Executive Summary Florida has long held the distinction of being the number one U.S. cruise state, home to the top three cruise ports in the world — PortMiami, Port Everglades and Port Canaveral. However, Florida is in danger of losing this economically favorable status, with potential redeployment of the increasingly large floating assets of the cruise industry to other markets. Great future opportunity clearly exists, as the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) continues to cite the cruise industry as the fastest-growing segment of the travel industry and notes that because only approximately 24 percent of U.S. adults have ever Cruise ships at PortMiami taken a cruise vacation, there remains an enormous untapped market. • Costa Diadema Welcomes Pepper, the Humanoid Robot Able to Interact with Guests
COSTA DIADEMA WELCOMES PEPPER, THE HUMANOID ROBOT ABLE TO INTERACT WITH GUESTS Costa Cruises is bringing 5 latest generation robots on board the flagship of the fleet, to entertain guests during their vacations. Genoa, 12 July 2016 – On board of Costa Diadema, flagship of the Costa Cruises fleet, was presented Pepper, the first robot in the world able to recognize main human emotions and proactively interact with the surrounding environment. Starting from today, five Pepper robots will be operative on all 7‐day cruises of the Costa’s flagship in the Western Mediterranean: their task will be to entertain cruise passengers, making their on board experience even more unique and unforgettable. This innovation, unique in the cruise industry, is the result of an agreement signed between the Italian cruise company and SoftBank Robotics (formerly Aldebaran), part of SoftBank Group, announced late last year. Launched in 2014 in Tokyo, Pepper is well equipped with features and a high‐level interface for communicating with those around him, using the latest advances in voice and face recognition. On board Costa Diadema, Pepper is able to speak 3 different languages ‐ Italian, English and French – so to better interact with the Costa’s international clientele. “Thanks to the introduction of these robots on board Costa Diadema, Costa Cruises confirms once again its great spirit of innovation. Our goal is to amaze people that choose to spend their holidays with us and to go beyond their expectations offering something unforgettable. I am convinced that being able to interact with Pepper will be an incredible experience for all our guests” – declared Neil Palomba, President of Costa Cruises.

  • Cruise Ship Locations 16 May 2021
CRUISE SHIP LOCATIONS 16 MAY 2021 Compiled by Mike Pryce, Wellington NZ (Information believed correct at this date. Compiled from various sources and internet AIS, especially www.cruisemapper.com. Excludes ferries and cruise ferries. Many cruise ships have been in “warm” lay-up, when they have periodically moved from their berths or anchorages and gone for short voyages locally to give their engines and equipment “a run”, and including production of freshwater, before returning to lay-up. Ships at anchor periodically need to berth to take onboard fuel, food, provisions and other supplies. Some inter-ship crew transfers at sea are being made, outside port limits. With the resumption of “normal” cruising looking very uncertain in many countries in the near future, more cruise ships are likely to move to “cold” lay-up until the situation becomes clearer, whilst others go into shipyards for overhauls and surveys. Many cruise ships have been in lay-up for over a year, as the initial “pause” has been continually extended due to more Covid-19 outbreaks, and many financial assumptions made on the expectation of an initial two-months lockdown have needed reviewing. This has resulted in many recent sales of older ships, and limited cruising in the Mediterranean and Europe, where these areas are being affected by sporadic outbreaks in Covid-19 infections. The largest concentration of laid-up cruise ships is on the Bahamas Banks (east of Miami and south of Freeport) A large number of cruise ships are anchored off the south coast of England, west of Southampton. Another large group are anchored in the South China Sea, NE of Singapore.

Virginia and Bill Maclean, from Inverness, are passengers on the Costa Pacifica and fear they are being sent into the “eye of the storm” after the latest on board announcement. All passengers apart from French nationals have been stopped from leaving the ship, which docked in Marseille, France, on Friday morning.
