Lifespan.org About Lifespan Lifespan, Rhode Island’s first health system, was founded in 1994 by Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital. Today, Lifespan partners include Rhode Island Hospital and its Hasbro Children’s Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital, Newport Hospital and Gateway Healthcare. Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children’s Hospital Rhode Island Hospital is a private, not-for-profit, acute care hospital, with 719 beds. Founded in 1863, it is the largest hospital in Rhode Island, a nationally recognized research and academic medical center, serves as the Level 1 trauma center for southeastern New England, and provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, with particular expertise in cardiology, emergency medicine and trauma, neurosciences, oncology/radiation oncology, orthopedics, pediatrics, and surgery. Rhode Island Hospital is the principal teaching hospital of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Hasbro Children’s Hospital, the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital, was built in 1994, and has the area’s only Pediatric Level I Trauma Center, pediatric intensive care unit and pediatric oncology and cardiac programs. The 87-bed Hasbro Children’s Hospital has separate emergency and surgical units designated for pediatric patients and operates specialty clinics treating children ranging in age from newborn to 18 years. The Miriam Hospital The Miriam Hospital is a private, not-for-profit, 247-bed, acute care general hospital founded by Rhode Island’s Jewish community in 1926. The Miriam Hospital provides a broad range of primary, secondary and tertiary medical and surgical services to adolescents and adults, with particular expertise in cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, urology, immunology and infectious diseases. The hospital also provides a full range of pathology and radiology services as well as psychiatric consultation/liaison services. The Miriam Hospital is a major teaching affiliate of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital Bradley Hospital, which opened in 1931, was the nation’s first Lifespan psychiatric hospital devoted exclusively to children and adolescents. Newport Hospital has state-of-the-art surgical facilities and cardiopulmonary services along with an emergency department that features private examining rooms, a trauma room, cardiac rooms, a fracture room and a radiology suite. Gateway Healthcare Gateway Healthcare was established in 1995 as a mental health center for residents of northern and central Rhode Island. Gateway has grown to include several locations across Rhode Island. Gateway’s size and statewide reach set it apart from other community-based mental health and substance abuse organizations, providing free care each year to those in need.
