Art Institute of Chicago The Art Institute Of Chicago has over 300,000 works of art An internationally renowned institution, the Art Institute of Chicago is a museum that houses art collections from around the world. Its origins can be traced to the Chicago Academy of Design, which was established by local artists in 1866 and was restored as the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in 1879 . The Art Institute took its present name in 1882 and was moved to its current building in 1893, covering an entire city block between Jackson and Monroe streets. The museum contains over 300,000 works of art and is noted for its collections of 19th century French paintings and 20th century paintings and sculpture. The extensive collection keeps visitors occupied for many hours. Children too can learn and have an enjoyable time at the Kraft Education Center. A new large wing had been added to the museum in 2009 and the works of famous artists such as Kandinsky began to be seen in the modern extension designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano. Edward Kemeys’ lions at the entrance of the institute are one of the most beloved and recognizable sculptures in the city. New amenities as well as an interior garden have also been added during the expansion. Increased commitment to exhibit challenging contemporary work was first indicated by the innovative gallery owner Katherine Kuh. Chicago Tribune once reported that Kemeys said the lions at the entrance of the building are meant to guard it. The great city of Chicago houses not only this wonderful museum but also about 40 others. Where is Art Institute Of Chicago? Located on Michigan Avenue, the Art Institute of Chicago has three entrances (Michigan Avenue, Monroe Street and the Millennium Park). Best Time To Visit Art Institute Of Chicago April through May is the best time to visit Chicago since the city enjoys beautiful weather in the summer. However, tourists should expect denser crowds and longer lines at attractions during this time of the year. The city isn’t as crowded in the spring and fall. Greenlease donated a walnut crucifix by French sculptor César Bagard to Rockhurst University’s Jesuit community in Kansas City, Missouri. This gift initiated a collaboration of thirty years between Mrs. Greenlease and Rockhurst’s president, Father Maurice E. Van Ackeren, S.J. Together they sought to enhance the university and its students’ spiritual and educational experience by making fine religious works of art accessible for viewing on campus. Virginia financed the purchases that Father Van Ackeren made, the sum of which came to be known as the Van Ackeren Collection of Religious Art. Throughout their endeavor, the two took advantage of the expertise of the curators of the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art in Kansas City, Missouri (now known as The Nelson- Atkins Museum of Art) and employed that institution as an intermediary station for evaluating works before they were purchased.

Annually, we produce 2,000 free-admission cultural programs including some of Chicago’s largest and most iconic events including Taste of Chicago, the Chicago Air & Water Show and the Chicago Blues Festival. DCASE’s extensive inventory of events and programs reaches across all demographic interests and draws an estimated 25 million guests per year.
