RACE AMITY DAY Florence hosts K-9 Shoals area to celebrate certifications this week on Sunday By Lisa Singleton-Rickman Staff Writer

The Shoals Race Amity Coalition has realized its goal of having a 100-year-old effort recognized throughout the Shoals. The Shoals area, as well as Franklin County, will celebrate Race Amity Day on Sunday. The event’s purpose is to recognize the growing diversity of Amer- ica’s citizens and encourage friendship, civility and respect between all people. Sheffield was the first city government to approve a proclamation declaring the day. The town and city coun- cils of Tuscumbia, Muscle Shoals, Florence, Cherokee, Leighton and Littleville, as well as Russellville, have followed with similar proc- lamations. The commissions of Lauderdale, Colbert and Franklin counties have also followed suit. The effort has been spear- headed in the Shoals by Jacquie Osborne of Florence and Sheffield resident Mary Stevens.
