You can grow ideas in the garden of your mind. It's good to be curious about many things. You can think about things and make believe. All you have to do is think, and they'll grow.” ~Fred “Mr.”Rogers In the planning stages of this year’s Kidz Konzerts and Music in the Middle Elgin Symphony Orchestra performances, the ESO Education Committee held a brainstorming session. We perceived a curriculum highlighting the ideas of great composers in addition to drawing connections in music with science, technology engineering and math. Each student is unique in their approach to learning and music study can access areas of the brain that are difficult to unlock. There is evidence that music inspired great minds in other disciplines. Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Neil Armstrong, Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison were all accomplished musicians. Oliver Sacks, British neurologist and naturalist said, “What is beyond dispute is the effect of intensive musical training on the young, plastic brain. Although a teaspoon of Mozart may or may not make a child a better mathematician, there is little doubt that regular exposure to music and especially regular, active participation in music, may stimulate development of many areas of the brain.” Within this guide we have background on the composers, lessons on music structure and elements, and STEM activities.

He was born in 1875, and was of Basque descent (an area of land in between France and Spain). He started playing piano when he was just 7 years old, and showed amazing talent at that young of an age. He learned composition and harmony a few years later, and then went on to attend the Conservatoire de Paris (Paris Conservatory), the best music school in all of France. Maurice was known for loving all different kinds of music, and used different types in his own pieces.

  • Cso Resound Releases Mason Bates: Anthology of Fantastic Zoology Conducted by Riccardo Muti
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Press Contacts: May 9, 2016 Eileen Chambers, 312.294.3092 CSO RESOUND RELEASES MASON BATES: ANTHOLOGY OF FANTASTIC ZOOLOGY CONDUCTED BY RICCARDO MUTI Digital-Only Release Available June 10 Available for Pre-Order on iTunes beginning May 10 CHICAGO—The digital-only release of the next CSO Resound recording, Mason Bates: Anthology of Fantastic Zoology, is available through download and streaming services beginning Friday, June 10. The recording is available for pre-order exclusively on iTunes beginning May 10. The recording features former CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates’ Anthology of Fantastic Zoology which was a CSO commission and received its world premiere in Chicago under the baton of Music Director Riccardo Muti during his June 2015 residency. Anthology of Fantastic Zoology is a 35-minute acoustic work that can be described as a concerto for orchestra, drawing its subject matter from the strange creatures found in Jorge Luis Borges’ book of magical realism by the same title. This 11-movement work contains short musical depictions of fantastic creatures, from sprites, nymphs and sirens, to gryphon, naga (evil snakes) and a Zaratan—an animal which is an island. Between these picture-pieces are transitional movements which take the listener deeper into the forest world that these surreal creatures populate—and further into the night—all culminating in an epic episode with all the creatures in motion at the witching hour just before dawn. Though Bates is widely known for his use of electronica and recorded material in his compositions, no electronic sounds were used in this piece.
