  • Sindhi Community – Shiv Sena
Refugee Review Tribunal AUSTRALIA RRT RESEARCH RESPONSE Research Response Number: IND30284 Country: India Date: 4 July 2006 Keywords: India – Maharashtra – Sindhi Community – Shiv Sena This response was prepared by the Country Research Section of the Refugee Review Tribunal (RRT) after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the RRT within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Questions 1. Is there any independent information about any current ill-treatment of Sindhi people in Maharashtra state? 2. Is there any information about the authorities’ position on any ill-treatment of Sindhi people? RESPONSE 1. Is there any independent information about any current ill-treatment of Sindhi people in Maharashtra state? Executive Summary Information available on Sindhi websites, in press reports and in academic studies suggests that, generally speaking, the Sindhi community in Maharashtra state are not ill-treated. Most writers who address the situation of Sindhis in Maharashtra generally concern themselves with the social and commercial success which the Sindhis have achieved in Mumbai (where the greater part of the Sindh’s Hindu populace relocated after the partition of India and Pakistan). One news article was located which reported that the Sindhi community had been targeted for extortion, along with other “mercantile communities”, by criminal networks affiliated with Maharashtra state’s Sihiv Sena organisation.

MI French Interdisciplinary Mission in Sindh FS Edito The first half of the year 2009 was very busy for several reasons. The study group “History and Sufism in the Valley of the Indus” organized a one-day conference in January on Plurality of sources and interdisciplinary approach: a case study of Sehwan Sharif in Sindh. It was attended by senior scholars such as 9 Claude Markovits (CNRS-CEIAS) or Monique Kervran (CNRS), as well as doctoral students such as Annabelle Collinet and Johanna Blayac, and also 0 “post-docs” such as Frédérique Pagani (p. 4-5). The conference was also attended by Sindhis from the very small community settled in Paris. 0 In the same period, two professors working on Sufism in Pakistan were invited by the EHESS. Pnina Werbner, professor of Anthropology at Keele University, was 2 invited by IISMM, an institute centred on the Muslim world and affiliated to r EHESS. Professor Werbner delivered conferences on topics related to Sufism, e and she also headed a workshop for Ph.D. students. She wrote a seminal paper on Transnationalism and Regional Cults: The Dialectics of Sufism in the b Plurivocal Muslim World (p. 6-7) which will be put online on the forthcoming MIFS website. Professor Richard K. Wolf, professor of Ethnomusicology at Harvard University, was invited in May by the EHESS, by Marie-Claude Mahias (CNRS-CEIAS). He tem delivered four lectures, the first one devoted to Nizami Sufism in Karachi and Delhi. Professor Wolf gave a talk at the study group “History and Sufism in the p Valley of the Indus” on “Music in Shrine Sufism of Pakistan” (CEIAS, 28 May 2009).

  • Jhulelal, Saeens and the Making of Religious
WHAT’S UP IN THE SINDHI DEVOTIONAL ? CALL FOR PAPERS JHULELAL, SAEENS AND THE MAKING OF RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS (provisional title) ‘What’s up in the Sindhi devotional?’ is an academic international conference organised by the CNRS. Part of the Udero Lal Research Project (URLP), the conference is the first in its series to broaden the field of Sindhi studies through the lens of the devotional. It intends to examine the interplay between the issue of authority and the transmission of devotional traditions in the context of the Sindhi religious. This conference will be the closing event of the first ever Jhulelal exhibition that will be organised in collaboration with the Sindhi Film Festival. The Jhulelal exhibition will have live cultural performances along with screenings of Sindhi films from both sides of the border. It will start from the concept of saeen [sā`īn], a well known Sindhi word which is translated in Permanand Mewaram’s Dictionary (1910) as follows: « a lord, master, sir, owner ». In Shah Abul Latif’s world, usually represented as the matrix of Sindhi devotional, the Saeen is the Master, what means God itself, and nowadays, Saeen is used to designate the masters of different religious traditions belonging to Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism. Also, interestingly, the word Saeen is used for both men and women in Sindhi context. The different forms of devotional expressions will be explored with the aim of deciphering how religious traditions are permanently constructed for fitting the needs of a given place and time. In this respect, the conference wishes to focus on a sacred figure known as Jhulelal, knowing that in Pakistan and in India, this name refers to a number of sacred figures also known as Udero Lal, Amar Lal, Khwajah Khizr, and even Lal Shahbaz Qalandar.

International Journal of Wood Culture 1 (2021) 1–28 brill.com/ijwc Wooden Symphonies of Bygone Times: The Perishing Legacy of Traditional Havelis in Sindh, Pakistan Anila Naeem | orcid: 0000-0001-9727-9519 Department of Architecture and Planning, N.E.D. University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi, Pakistan [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract For centuries, wood has remained a primary material contributing to the evolution of built environments – employed for structural solutions as well as decorative and iconographic expressionism. The façades of traditional havelis in Shikarpur (Sindh, Pakistan) hold witness to an exquisite form of wood craftsmanship; a style that evolved and remained in vogue during 18th–19th century; commissioned by wealthy merchants. These surviving remnants of bygone times reflect on the socio-cultural, religious, and political spirit of urbanized Sindh – concurrently forming a unique traditional fabric, today struggling for its survival. Post-Independence (1947) demo- graphic and socio-cultural transformations adversely impacted the city’s historic environment. Residential mansions, once a pride of the elite gentry, changed hands to an economically impoverished stratum of society, leaving them vulnerable to exploi- tations by a growing market of antique dealers. Recognizing their threatened status, the Government of Sindh declared “Shikarpur Historic Town” a protected heritage in 1998. Furthermore, 1203 properties were given protected heritage designation in March 2012 – over 80% of which are privately owned residences. However, mere noti- fications, unsupported by active monitoring and administrative systems, or economic incentives to property owners, leave historic havelis still at risk. The presented research attempts at developing an in-depth understanding of fast disappearing woodwork from historic façades, and reinstate a pride in indigenous building traditions to stimu- late a sense of ownership and motivation for preservation.

  • In Conversation with Muhammad Zeeshan Art Now Pakistan , August
It is the name of a Hindu goddess that Hindus may know more about as compared to people from different cultures. But people will still be able to relate it to Indian/Hindu mythology. For me, it becomes local then. Especially for works with religious imagery, there is usually some kind of introduction people have to it, more so due to globalisation. SS: Do you keep in mind the audience and location when you make work, or is this no longer importantimportant inin today’stoday’s globalisedglobalised world?world? MZ: This depends on what kind of show I’m doing. For example, if someone invited me to do a show on the Baldia Town incident, I would make work accordingly. If someone asked me to make work on the street, I may not use paper, but may choose to build a monument instead, and consider factors such as durability and technique. It varies from show to show. One has to keep many things in mind apart from just the viewer: the space, location, the curatorial note, the conversations between the artist and the gallery owner – everything matters. SS: Can you explain your work-making process? MZ: Besides imagery and content, my work contains an essential and prominent technical aspect – laser scoring, which can also be called "drawing with fire". That’s because laser is like fire, used usually for cutting acrylic/wood. I modified this technology to enable myself to make drawings on paper. The nature of paper is Garaj Baras, Gouache and laser scoring on wasli, 55”x 38”, 2 015 very sensitive, while a laser’s effect is incredibly hard, so I use it in such a way that it doesn’t burn paper or cut it through and through, but instead creates marks.

  • Book of Abstracts
Book of Abstracts The Past Before Us: Heritage and History in South Asia, 5-6 September 2016 Kamalika Banerjee (National University of Singapore) Neocolonial Heritage Practices in ‘Postcolonial’ Mumbai [email protected], [email protected] Daniel Goh (2014) states that history is not destination, but the production of heritage reproduces the dominant cultural logic, of the past in the material present, “so that history defines destiny”. In this paper, I seek to theorize the spatial practice of an Indian city through the politics, practice and discourse of heritage preservation in the city of Mumbai. Mumbai has a postcolonial character in terms of its urban dynamics, multiple locations of power and agency. However, the politics of heritage reveals a neo-colonial or a decolonial facet. I refer to David Lowenthal’s (1996) classic argument, that while sharing the same field of past, “history explores and explains pasts grown ever more opaque over time; heritage clarifies past so as to infuse them with present purposes”. The present times have seen how history has ceased to be an exploration and has been continually constructed and reinterpreted. In the whole debate over “provincializing” the West, postcolonial historians have argued for a new kind of history, which is attuned to the diverse routes to the past. Jorgensen (2014 pp. 4) affirms that in heritage studies, history is negotiable and hence “studying how history is constructed in situ offers an exceptional opportunity to examine what is meant by “history”…” Thus, heritage encompasses both materiality, manifested in its practice, and historicity. In this paper, I seek to explore the politics of heritage through these two approaches: 1) what sense of history do the new manifestations of heritage spring from, and 2) how is heritage socially and politically constituted in the context of the emerging contours of urbanism in a postcolonial Indian city.
