  • Zoogeography of the Holarctic Species of the Noctuidae (Lepidoptera): Importance of the Bering Ian Refuge
© Entomologica Fennica. 8.XI.l991 Zoogeography of the Holarctic species of the Noctuidae (Lepidoptera): importance of the Bering ian refuge Kauri Mikkola, J, D. Lafontaine & V. S. Kononenko Mikkola, K., Lafontaine, J.D. & Kononenko, V. S. 1991 : Zoogeography of the Holarctic species of the Noctuidae (Lepidoptera): importance of the Beringian refuge. - En to mol. Fennica 2: 157- 173. As a result of published and unpublished revisionary work, literature compi lation and expeditions to the Beringian area, 98 species of the Noctuidae are listed as Holarctic and grouped according to their taxonomic and distributional history. Of the 44 species considered to be "naturall y" Holarctic before this study, 27 (61 %) are confirmed as Holarctic; 16 species are added on account of range extensions and 29 because of changes in their taxonomic status; 17 taxa are deleted from the Holarctic list. This brings the total of the group to 72 species. Thirteen species are considered to be introduced by man from Europe, a further eight to have been transported by man in the subtropical areas, and five migrant species, three of them of Neotropical origin, may have been assisted by man. The m~jority of the "naturally" Holarctic species are associated with tundra habitats. The species of dry tundra are frequently endemic to Beringia. In the taiga zone, most Holarctic connections consist of Palaearctic/ Nearctic species pairs. The proportion ofHolarctic species decreases from 100 % in the High Arctic to between 40 and 75 % in Beringia and the northern taiga zone, and from between 10 and 20 % in Newfoundland and Finland to between 2 and 4 % in southern Ontario, Central Europe, Spain and Primorye.

E-mail: [email protected] The paper contains data on the fauna of the Lepidoptera families Erebidae (excluding subfamilies Lymantriinae and Arctiinae) and Noctuidae of the Saur Mountains (East Kazakhstan). The check list includes 216 species. The map of collecting localities is presented. Key words: Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Erebidae, Asia, Kazakhstan, Saur, fauna. INTRODUCTION The fauna of noctuoid moths (the families Erebidae and Noctuidae) of Kazakhstan is still poorly studied. Only the fauna of West Kazakhstan has been studied satisfactorily (Gorbunov 2011). On the faunas of other parts of the country, only fragmentary data are published (Lederer, 1853; 1855; Aibasov & Zhdanko 1982; Hacker & Peks 1990; Lehmann et al. 1998; Benedek & Bálint 2009; 2013; Korb 2013). In contrast to the West Kazakhstan, the fauna of noctuid moths of East Kazakhstan was studied inadequately.

To the fauna of Pyralid and Crambid moths (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae, Crambidae) of Rostov-on-Don Province. SUMMARY. Since 1978, during day- and night-time moth monitoring in Rostov-on-Don Province, 5397 ex. of 137 species Pyralidae and Crambidae were collected in 36 localities. Preliminary studies of S.N. Alpheraky [Алфера- ки, 1876] represented 63 species. The total list now includes 157 species of both families. Two species of Pyralidae (Phycitinae), Pempelia amoenella (Zeller, 1848) and Metallosticha argyrogrammos (Zeller, 1847), re reported from Russia for the first time. The most common and mass species are: Nomophila noctuella ([Den. & Schiff.]), Etiella zinckenella (Tr.), Aporodes floralis (Hb.), Euchromius ocellea (Hw.), Actenia brunnealis (Tr.), Homoeosoma nimbella (Dup.), Mecyna flavalis ([Den. & Schiff.]), Synaphe moldavica (Esp.), Pediasia luteella ([Den. & Schiff.]), Lamoria anella ([Den. & Schiff.]), Endotricha flammealis ([Den. & Schiff.]), Parapoynx stratiotata (L.), Hypsopygia costalis (F.), Calamotropha paludella (Hb.), Thisanotia chrysonuchella (Scop.), Agriphila tristella ([Den. & Schiff.]).

  • CHECKLIST of WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea)
WISCONSIN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY SPECIAL PUBLICATION No. 6 JUNE 2018 CHECKLIST OF WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea) Leslie A. Ferge,1 George J. Balogh2 and Kyle E. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties.

Rings: Check List of Identified Lepidoptera Collected at Mud Lake State 2001 THE GREAT LAKES ENTOMOLOGIST 9 CHECK LIST OF IDENTIFIED LEPIDOPTERA COLLECTED AT MUD LAKE STATE NATURE PRESERVE, WILLIAMS COUNTY, OHIO Roy W, Rings 1 ABSTRACT A total of696 species ofLepidoptera is reported from the Mud Lake State Nature Preserve, Williams County, Ohio. This preserve is only a few miles from both the Indiana and Michigan state borders. The great biodiversity of moths is reflected in the bog, fen, shrub swamp, and marsh communities bor dering the lake. A check list of species summarizes identified collections for 1988,1992,1995 and 1996 and includes the Hodges et al (1983) species num bers, the scientific name, and the numbers collected by different collecting methods.

  • Heliothis Virescens Species Group (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Heliothinae) Based on Morphology and Three Genes
Systematic Entomology (2013), 38, 523–542 DOI: 10.1111/syen.12010 Revised status of Chloridea Duncan and (Westwood), 1841, for the Heliothis virescens species group (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Heliothinae) based on morphology and three genes MICHAEL G. POGUE Department of Agriculture, Systematic Entomology Laboratory, PSI, Agricultural Research Service, U.S, Washington, DC, U.S.A. Abstract. The Heliothinae comprise some of the world’s most injurious agricultural pests. This study reanalyses a subsample of the Heliothis group to determine the monophyly of Chloridea (Heliothis virescens and H. subflexa). Two nuclear gene regions, elongation factor-1α (EF-1α; 1240 bp) and dopa decarboylase (DDC ; 687 bp), and the barcoding region of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI ; 708 bp) were used in this analysis for a total of 2635 bp and a morphological dataset of 20 characters and 62 character states. Sixteen species representing five genera plus two outgroup species were used in the analysis. Analyses used were Maximum Parsimony (MP), Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Bayesian Inference (BI). The revised status for the monophyletic genus Chloridea Duncan and (Westwood) was supported by a very strong bootstrap support (BP = 98–100). Larval host-plant usage is discussed within the Heliothis clade. Polyphagy is most likely the ancestral condition with a host shift to monophagy and oligophagy. Based on known larval hosts, Heliocheilus is oligophagous on Poaceae. Traits of host plant use in Helicoverpa and Chloridea where both polyphagy and oligophagy occur in closely related species are discussed. Introduction the world (Fitt, 1989). Cho et al. (2008) emphasized the importance of a reliable classification and phylogeny for work- Heliothinae (Noctuidae) currently comprises 381 named ers to communicate, organize and predict how traits important species worldwide with several unnamed species awaiting to their management, especially polyphagy, evolve.
