BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS OF PACIFIC NORTHWEST FORESTS AND WOODLANDS: RARE, ENDANGERED, AND MANAGEMENT-SENSITIVE SPECIES ii ABOUT THIS BOOK e present a compilation of 122 taxa of butterflies and moths that are of special interest in Wthe Pacific Northwest, regarding forest management and conservation. Our list is not a nomination slate for survey and monitor species; rather, it is an assemblage of species that should be considered as premier taxa for assessment of their current status and as candidates for long- term measures of populations for interests directed toward managing forests for biodiversity, and for comparing management/conservation policies. The list of butterflies and moths is dominated by species and subspecies that are uncommon or rare, but we have included species that are widely distributed and associated with particular plant communities of special interest in the Pacific Northwest, including oak woodlands, alpine meadows, sand dunes, and wetlands. We present at least one photo of an adult for each taxon. More often than not we provide additional images of both sexes, and sometimes compare the dorsal wing surface to the ventral wing surface to serve as an aid in identification. Also, for each species we offer a short statement about identification, ecology, sensitivity issues, and population assessment. For a few of the species we present an image of the caterpillar. Unfortunately, many of the uncommon and rare species in the Pacific Northwest have not been photographed. In fact, the caterpillar and its foodplant are not known for some of the species. It is our hope that this book will stimulate studies into the ecology of these species and provide a stimulus for conservation efforts to keep them from qualifying for inclusion on the Federal Endangered Species List.     RARE NATIVE ANIMALS OF RHODE ISLAND Revised: March, 2006 ABOUT THIS LIST The list is divided by vertebrates and invertebrates and is arranged taxonomically according to the recognized authority cited before each group. Appropriate synonomy is included where names have changed since publication of the cited authority. The Natural Heritage Program's Rare Native Plants of Rhode Island includes an estimate of the number of "extant populations" for each listed plant species, a figure which has been helpful in assessing the health of each species. Because animals are mobile, some exhibiting annual long-distance migrations, it is not possible to derive a population index that can be applied to all animal groups. The status assigned to each species (see definitions below) provides some indication of its range, relative abundance, and vulnerability to decline. More specific and pertinent data is available from the Natural Heritage Program, the Rhode Island Endangered Species Program, and the Rhode Island Natural History Survey. STATUS. The status of each species is designated by letter codes as defined: (FE) Federally Endangered (7 species currently listed) (FT) Federally Threatened (2 species currently listed) (SE) State Endangered Native species in imminent danger of extirpation from Rhode Island. These taxa may meet one or more of the following criteria: 1. Formerly considered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for Federal listing as endangered or threatened. 2. Known from an estimated 1-2 total populations in the state. 3. Apparently globally rare or threatened; estimated at 100 or fewer populations range-wide. Animals listed as State Endangered are protected under the provisions of the Rhode Island State Endangered Species Act, Title 20 of the General Laws of the State of Rhode Island.

In „Die Schmetterlinge Baden-Württembergs“, Band 6, Nachtfalter IV, 1997, lautet der deutsche Name „Wolfsmilch-Rindeneule“ A. euphorbiae ist west-palaearktisch verbreitet. In Europa ist sie nach K. & R. aus nahezu allen Ländern gemeldet. Ob sie in Luxemburg, Ungarn und Griechenland vorkommt ist unbekannt. Allerdings liegen Meldungen aus Belgien und den Niederlanden, sowie aus den Ungarn und Griechenland umgebenden Ländern vor.     NEATH PORT TALBOT COUNTY BOROUGH COUNCIL LOCAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN (2011-2026) EXAMINATION IN PUBLIC: Matter 4: Housing Provision – Allocated Sites Action Point 7 For the Ynysymond Road site (H1/25), Council to identify the extent and nature of biodiversity interest on the allocated site. Council’s Response This site consists of a cohesive network of fields supporting a variety of grassland habitats bounded by hedgerows with good connectivity to the surrounding countryside. The Council’s Biodiversity Unit has indicated that the site constitutes Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) habitat and meets the criteria for a ‘Site of Importance for Nature Conservation’ (SINC) – NPTSINC053 Pandy Farm1. In addition to the above, the watercourses on the site (particularly along the northern boundary) also constitute LBAP and SINC quality habitat. For clarity, a plan illustrating the extent of the SINC in relation to the housing allocation boundary is also appended. The features of the Pandy Farm SINC extend throughout all of the fields within the allocation, the watercourse SINCs are more limited, as shown on the plan. The area of land to the west of Derwen Road comprises improved grassland and the land to the east of Derwen Road consists of Rush Pasture with ditches, hedges and other boundary features. On this basis therefore, it is likely that mitigation measures will be required to ensure that there is no reduction in the overall value of the area. Where mitigation is not possible, compensation measures will normally be required to offset harm as far as practicable. A Biodiversity Records Centre Search has been undertaken2 which details the species recorded within the vicinity of the site.

Guppy – Research Scientist January 31, 2000 2 Abstract This study was undertaken to learn more of the distribution, status and habitat requirements of B.C. macrolepidoptera (butterflies and the larger moths), the group of insects given the highest priority by the BC Environment Conservation Center. The study was conducted in the Chilcotin District near Williams Lake and Riske Creek in central B.C. The study area contains a wide variety of habitats, including rare habitat types that elsewhere occur only in the Lillooet-Lytton area of the Fraser Canyon and, in some cases, the Southern Interior. Specimens were collected with light traps and by aerial net. A total of 538 species of macrolepidoptera were identified during the two years of the project, which is 96% of the estimated total number of species in the study area. There were 29,689 specimens collected, and 9,988 records of the number of specimens of each species captured on each date at each sample site. A list of the species recorded from the Chilcotin is provided, with a summary of provincial and global distributions. The habitats, at site series level as TEM mapped, are provided for each sample. A subset of the data was provided to the Ministry of Forests (Research Section, Williams Lake) for use in a Flamulated Owl study. A voucher collection of 2,526 moth and butterfly specimens was deposited in the Royal BC Museum. There were 25 species that are rare in BC, with most known only from the Riske Creek area.

Two new species of noctuid moths are described and illustrated. Ac­ ronicta heitzmani, new species, in the subfamily Acronictinae, is known from Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois and Ohio. Lithophane joannis, new species, in the subfamily Cucul­ Iiinae, is known from Ohio, Kentucky, and Michigan. Both species are compared with morphologically similar congeners. Additional key words: Acronicta heitzmani, Lithophane joannis, faunal survey. Since their origins, the Ohio Lepidopterists and the Society of Ken­ tucky Lepidopterists ha ve promoted regional surveys of the Lepidoptera fauna of midland United States. These efforts have resulted in numerous new records and range extensions and in the discovery of several new taxa, The purpose of this paper is to describe and illustrate two recently discovered species of the family Noctuidae. Both apparently are re­ stricted to midland United States, Acronicta heitzmani, new species, is known from Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois and Ohio. Lithophane joan­ nis, new species, is known from Ohio, Kentucky, and Michigan. Both species are morphologically distinct from, and sympatric with, con­ geners, In 1964, J. R, Heitzman collected a series of an unusual Acronicta species in Missouri. The specimens superficially resembled A. fragilis (Guenee) which was not recorded from Missouri. In 1967, the first author collected a specimen of the same species in Kentucky; the second author took the first Ohio specimen in 1975, The specimens were de­ termined as a possibly undescribed species near A.

As a result of published and unpublished revisionary work, literature compi­ lation and expeditions to the Beringian area, 98 species of the Noctuidae are listed as Holarctic and grouped according to their taxonomic and distributional history. Of the 44 species considered to be "naturall y" Holarctic before this study, 27 (61 %) are confirmed as Holarctic; 16 species are added on account of range extensions and 29 because of changes in their taxonomic status; 17 taxa are deleted from the Holarctic list. This brings the total of the group to 72 species. Thirteen species are considered to be introduced by man from Europe, a further eight to have been transported by man in the subtropical areas, and five migrant species, three of them of Neotropical origin, may have been assisted by man. The m~jority of the "naturally" Holarctic species are associated with tundra habitats. The species of dry tundra are frequently endemic to Beringia. In the taiga zone, most Holarctic connections consist of Palaearctic/ Nearctic species pairs. The proportion ofHolarctic species decreases from 100 % in the High Arctic to between 40 and 75 % in Beringia and the northern taiga zone, and from between 10 and 20 % in Newfoundland and Finland to between 2 and 4 % in southern Ontario, Central Europe, Spain and Primorye.
