The Board will follow KRS 160.350 Superintendent of Schools - Appointment - Term Vacancy - Qualifications to select an Interim Superintendent and hire our next Superintendent: "When a vacancy occurs the Board may appoint an acting superintendent to serve a term not to exceed six (6) months. This appointment may be renewed once for a period not to exceed three (3) months. An individual shall not assume the duties of superintendent until he or she provides the board of education with a copy of a certificate for school superintendent issued by the Education Professional Standards Board." The JCBE next step before hiring a new superintendent will be to select an Interim Superintendent before July 1, 2017. The goal will be to select this person by June to allow the Interim Superintendent to work with Dr. Hargens to allow a smooth transition. The Board thanks Dr. Hargens for her service to JCPS and for guiding the district through its strategic planning process. Updates will be provided as we select our Interim Superintendent and the process the Jefferson County Board of Education will use to hire a new Superintendent. Please share your thoughts [email protected] Celebrate trees during the month of April with Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation Our city's tree canopy includes approximately 270 species of trees found in the nearly 7,000 acres at Jefferson Memorial Forest and throughout 6,600 acres in 120 parks and six Olmsted-designed parkways. We'll be sharing interesting facts about trees throughout the month at our blog, Common Ground, where we've asked staff from our Forestry division to share their thoughts on trees and even asked them for their favorites. During the month of April, we're also asking the public to share pictures of their favorite trees at the Instagram page (@loumetroparks). Those who do so can drop by Metro Parks administrative offices at Joe Creason Park and pick up a free Tree Identification Poster! The posters will be available until 5 p.m. on Friday, April 28 - but you must participate (and share your picture/handle with us when you pick up). Also, only one poster per participant, please. For more information, visit Common Ground at https://louisvillemetroparks.wordpress.com/ and be sure to share your pics on Instagram. 2 E-News and Updates April 26th, 2017 CHERI BRYANT HAMILTON, DISTRICT 5 COUNCILWOMAN Louisville Metro Animal Services to Change Pet Surrender Process As of May 1st, Louisville Metro Animal Services will accept the surrendering of pets by appointment only. This new process is an effort to better serve the public and its pets. It is a proactive approach to saving animals’ lives. LMAS is not changing what it takes, just when. Currently, LMAS accepts pet surrenders, on-the-spot, even if the shelter is full. The appointment process, called managed intake, will give LMAS an opportunity to control the revolving door of pets. Last year, 1,960 pets were surrendered to LMAS, and so far this year, more than 600 pets have been surrendered. Any animal determined by LMAS to be stray, sick, injured or aggressive will be accepted immediately, without an appointment. LMAS has made several positive changes under the new leadership of Director Ozzy Gibson. He has explored a variety of methods to provide a positive outcome for LMAS shelter animals. The shelter’s Live Release Rate climbed to 86% in 2016. Several shelters across the country that have transitioned to managed-intake have reported positive outcomes and greater live release rates. The new process will not only reduce overcrowding but will also help with pet retention as owners may decide to keep their pets with more time to think about their decision and explore other options. Managed intake will also help reduce the length of stay for animals in the shelter and gives staff more time to make sure adequate resources are available. Under the new process, owners wanting to surrender their pets will first fill-out and submit a Pet History Form. The Pet History Form can be filled-out and submitted at the LMAS Animal Care Center (3705 Manslick Rd.) or online at www.louisvilleky.gov/animalservices. Once LMAS has reviewed the form, a staff member will contact the pet owner within two business days to set an appointment. Owners who surrender their pets will be charged a $25 impoundment fee to help cover the cost of care for their pet.
