The famed Svalbard archipelago is home to a number of incredible experiences, isolated from the crowds of traditional cruises you will undertake a true expedition adventure. Search for unique wildlife including whales and the elusive polar bear all whilst zodiac cruising through isolated fjords and massive icebergs. Indulge in the unique Arctic history of the region as you visit unique trapper cabins and abandoned polar research stations. ITINERARY DAY 1: Arrival in Longyearbyen Welcome to Longyearbyen, the administrative center of Svalbard and starting point of our Arctic expedition! At the Longyearbyen airport, you will be greeted by our staff and transferred to a quality hotel, which has been arranged by us and is included in the price of the itinerary. You will then be free to explore the charming, walkable town center. We recommend starting your discovery of this fascinating Norwegian High Arctic territory at the excellent Svalbard Museum, where you can also purchase hard-to-find polar books and maps. Afterward, you can enjoy an excellent dinner at one of Longyearbyen’s many delightful restaurants. If you are still awake at midnight, you will notice the sun has not set. Take in the views of icy fjords and glaciated mountains surrounding this historic former coal-mining town. Take advantage 29/05/2022, 06/06/2022 of shopping for souvenirs or some last-minute necessities such as cold-weather gear. Just remember, you will soon receive your very own DURATION parka to keep and waterproof boots to borrow on board the ship. For lunch, Longyearbyen offers 10 Days quick and easy meal options including the most northerly pizzas and kebabs in the world. Chimu Adventures PTY LTD ARCTIC WILDLIFE SAFARI, 10 DAY TRIP CODE ACPOSWS DAY 3: West Spitsbergen and Polar Ice Edge - Day 3 to 9 DEPARTURE The itinerary for this voyage focuses on the spectacular fjords, coasts and islands of western Spitsbergen, the main island of the Svalbard 29/05/2022, 06/06/2022 archipelago. This area contains Svalbard’s most impressive scenery and some of the Arctic’s best wildlife viewing opportunities. Our exact schedule DURATION and route will be shaped by the weather and ice conditions we encounter. Polar bears and other 10 Days iconic Arctic animals can be spotted at anytime, anywhere in our area of exploration. One of the pristine natural areas on this itinerary is South LOCATIONS Spitsbergen National Park, a vast region of varied landscapes including polar deserts and impassible mountain ranges. The centerpiece of this park is Spitsbergen Hornsund, a picture-perfect fjord where countless mighty glaciers cascade from soaring mountaintops into icy inlets. At this time of year, we are sure to encounter fast ice—that is, sea ice that is fastened to the shore. This situation offers an excellent chance of observing polar bears on the hunt for ringed seals. The park also includes the southern shores of Bellsund, a picturesque bay where we find the remains of historical whaling operations, including wooden boats, cabins and thousands of whale bones—a scene from the distant past, literally frozen in time. This area also offers great hiking opportunities through landscapes rich with Arctic flora and birdlife, as well as fascinating geology. Also on our route is Northwest Spitsbergen National Park, the crown jewel of Svalbard’s scenic wonders. Here we find deep fjords flanked by serrated mountain peaks and immense tidewater glaciers calving icebergs into turquoise waters. The whole area is alive with migratory Arctic seabirds. On this voyage, we are just in time to witness the return of millions of murres, guillemots and little auks to the small islands, mountainsides and sea cliffs where they breed within the park. This is also a great area to encounter marine mammals, including various kinds of whales and Arctic seals. Set among this incredible scenery and wildlife activity, we also find evidence of Svalbard’s earliest sealers and whalers. Our area of exploration also includes gorgeous Forlandet National Park. Here we find Prins Karls Forland, one of the best places in Svalbard to observe herds of walrus hauled out on land. Also along the route is North Isforden National Park, where we have the chance to observe endemic Svalbard reindeer grazing and Arctic fox romping in lush tundra meadows. Human habitation along our route can be found at Ny Ålesund, a former mining town and airship base that is now home to an international community of Arctic researchers. This is one of the world’s most northerly settlements where we find a museum, gift shop and post office. The West Spitsbergen and Polar Ice Edge route offers a stunning variety of Arctic landscapes and animals with minimal sailing time between excursions. Every day offers something new and exciting.     Tuesday June 28, 2016 It was a beautiful sunshiny day as 52 passengers from seven countries converged in the high Arctic town of Longyearbyen in Norway's Svalbard archipelago. Many of the people on our Spitsbergen–The Pack Ice Voyage had arrived a day or two early to avoid potential airline delays and to spend a little time exploring the environs of the northernmost town in the world. By 4 PM most of the group had assembled at the biggest hotel in town and prepared to board our bus to take us to the dock to meet our small Russian ship, Polar Pioneer. Earlier in the afternoon our luggage had been collected, placed on a truck, and taken to the ship. Upon boarding Polar Pioneer we were directed to our cabins where we reconnected with our luggage. An orientation meeting in the ship’s bar introduced three of the four leaders of our Arctic photography voyage—John Shaw, Jeff Vanuga and Joe Van Os. The fourth of the Photo Safaris leaders—Rinie van Meurs—would arrive after dinner to an enthusiastic welcome as he transferred from a larger ship to Polar Pioneer via Zodiac. Rinie had just completed a similar voyage to the one we were just starting. Therefore, he had good advance knowledge of where the pack ice was located and potentially where there was a good concentration of wildlife associated with it. In our orientation meeting we were also introduced to the ship’s doctor, the hotel manager, and another Arctic adventurer—Christian Genillard—a Swiss sailor who had participated in America's Cup as well as around-the-world sailboat races.

National parks Sør-Spitsbergen national park, Forlandet national park and Nordvest-Spitsbergen national park in Svalbard were established in 1973. Section 2. Boundaries of the national parks Sør-Spitsbergen national park comprises Wedel Jarlsberg Land, Torell Land and Sørkapp Land and adjacent territorial waters.     ASSESSMENT SYSTEM FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES IN SVALBARD Rasmus Hansson Pål Prestrud Nils Are 0ritsland (Editors) Rapport nr. 68 Oslo 1990 FOREWORD TO THE ENGLISH VERSION Tourism and commercial activities, where petroleum exploration is a major part, have increased significantly on Svalbard during the last ten years and wiJ1 probably continue to increase in the years to come. Monitoring this development and recognizing the potential for environmental deterioration of the archipelago the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment in 1986 instructed the Norwegian Polar Research Institute to develop a new programme for environmental impact assessment and management advice. We found that the Beaufort Environmental Monitoring Project (BEMP) and other projects utilizing the Adaptive Environmental Assessment and Management methods (Holling 1978) provided a good basis for a programme for Svalbard. The progral!1me was named MUPS ("Miljøundersøkelser på Svalbard" which translates to "environmental impact studies on Svalbard") and included development of a system for environmental consequence analysis (MUPS analysis system). Two versions of the MUPS analysis system have been produced until now. The basis for the MUPS analysis system deviates from that of BEMP in severai ways: - We had, and partly still have, little detai\ed knowledge of the human activities that the programme might have to handle. It was primarily set up in response to petroleum activities, but had to be useful for tourism, coal mining etc. as well. Even the petroleum sector was unable to provide detailed scenarios. - No administrative framework is yet established for the implementation of MUPS. - Environmental Impact study projects imposed on companies must generally be geographically and temporally connected to each specific development or operation.

FINAL EAR FOR THE ACOBAR ACOUSTIC TOMOGRAPHY EXPERIMENT IN FRAM STRAIT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) is planning to conduct a full-scale acoustic tomography experiment (ACOBAR1 Experiment) in Fram Strait from 2010 to 2011 (2012), approximately 83 kilometers (km) (45 nautical miles [nmi]) from the west coast of Svalbard and 313 km (169 nmi) from the east coast of Greenland. The ACOBAR Experiment is building upon the initial underwater acoustic tomography system installed in Fram Strait during 2008 by the DAMOCLES2 Integrated Project. The goal of the ACOBAR Experiment is the continued development and installation of an ocean acoustic tomography system in Fram Strait that will provide the needed data to monitor the changing heat flux and currents and understand the effects of climate variability on water mass transport and sea ice exchange through the Strait. The experiment area within Fram Strait is triangular-shaped, covers roughly 25,921 km2, and lies wholly outside any territorial seas. Water depths in the experiment area range from about 1,400 m to over 5,000 m. Two vessels are scheduled to be used for deployment and recovery of experiment equipment: the research vessel (RV) Håkon Mosby, a 47-m vessel owned and managed by the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR), and the KV Svalbard, a 104-m Norwegian Coast Guard icebreaker and Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV).
