Wheeler Baseball Program 2009 2009 WHEELER WILDCATS 2009 SENIORS WHEELER WILDCAT BASEBALL PROGRAM Dear Wheeler Baseball Fans: Another baseball season is upon us. What an exciting time. We are all anxious to watch the 2009 Wheeler Wildcat Baseball Team get under way! The beginning of the baseball season usually means the temperature begins warming up, the azaleas start blooming, the crack of the bat is one of the great sounds in sports, and popcorn and peanuts work their way into our diets at the ballpark. Oh what fun! We all know that base- ball is the great "American Pastime" game. What a joy it will be during the 2009 season to watch the baseball team perform under the direction of Head Coach, Dave McDonald, and on the field named after the head coach, Dave McDonald Field. The coaching staff, players, and booster club parents have been working extremely hard preparing for the season. We all look forward to a wonderful spring of Wildcat Baseball! • Bomb Blast Kills Lebanese President-Elect Monaco's Princess
(Enmwrttort Baily damjma Vol. LXXXV1 NO. 6 The University of Connecticut Wednesday. September 15, 1982 Gemayel to have begun term Sept. 23- Bomb blast kills Lebanese President-elect Fifty others reported dead or injured in the explosion BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) — Bashir Gemayel, the 34-year old president-elect of Lebanon, was killed Tuesday in a bomb blast at an office of his Phalangist Party in Christian east Beirutrepresen- tatives. He had survived two other attempts on his life. There was no claim of responsibility for the blast, which munitions experts said was caused by an estimated 400 pounds of explosives. Government radio said eight people were dead and 50 others were either killed or wounded. Lebanese Prime Minister Shafik Wazzan called the bomb blast "a criminal act" and said he would delay the reopening of the last crossing point between east and west Beirut that remains closed. Gemayel campaigned on a platform of a "strong and united Lebanon" and promised upon election Aug. 23 to purge his divided country of all foreign armies. Most Sunni Moslem legislators boycotted the uncontested parliamentary elections that gave Gemayel the presidency. Moslem leftists expressed fears a Gemayel government would bring reprisals for the 1975-1976 civil war, which pitted Christians against an alliance of Moslem leftists and Palestinian guerril- las. Gemayel's top aides said there would be o retribution for the bloody civil strife but many Moslems remained unconvinced. On the day he was elected, Gemayel vowed to represent "all Lebanon" and said he sought "to achieve unity among all Lebanese." Bashir Gemayel had said he would be the Wests strongest ally in the Arab world, and he also was expected to seek close ties with Israel, which has supported his right-wing Phalange militia since the civil war.

  • Rays Clips 5-8-10
RAYS CLIPS May 8, 2010 May 7, 2010 Tampa Bay Rays open series in Oakland by improving to 13-1 on road By Marc Topkin, Times Staff Writer Some lineup tweaks pay off as Tampa Bay keeps up its astonishing start. OAKLAND, Calif. - The decisions are made for various reasons, whether it be recent play, complex data and statistical matrixes, or even an occasional old-fashioned hunch. Friday, manager Joe Maddon said he kept Willy Aybar in the lineup because he looked good the night before and he likes his swings against left-handed pitchers. And he put Sean Rodriguez in the lineup, ahead of Ben Zobrist, based on research of Rodriguez's success against Oakland starter Gio Gonzalez in the minor leagues (4-for-5). And as good as the Rays are going, it only figures both ended up delivering key hits in the 4-1 victory that improved their baseball-best record to 22-7. "Pretty nice,'' Maddon said. David Price had something to do with it, too, sputtering a bit early but going on to pitch into the eighth in dominating style, allowing only three hits, to improve to 4-1. And when he left, after a career-high 119 pitches, with the bases loaded and two outs, Randy Choate took it from there. "David's the story,'' Maddon said. "We get that kind of starting pitching once again.'' Choate did his job twice, actually, as Evan Longoria's throwing error on the first ground ball Choate got from Daric Barton allowed a run to score. But Choate came back and got another, getting Ryan Sweeney to bounce out to shortstop Jason Bartlett.
