Frequently Asked Questions 1. Is enrollment in Encore University restricted to current Encore singers?

No. Encore welcomes participation by anyone age 55 or older who would like to join. For our previous semesters, we had registrants from all over the U.S. Tell your friends! However, all participants must be paid registrants. Please do not share access codes. 2. What is included in the tuition?

The flat tuition gives you access to ALL of the rehearsals and class sessions over the entire 4 weeks of the semester, which is 40 hours of programming. You do NOT have to sign up for any specific classes. It is like an “all you can eat” buffet in a restaurant. Take as much or as little as you like. One flat fee gives you unlimited access to everything.

3. May I sign up for just one or two classes and just pay for those classes instead of paying for the entire 4-week program? No, to access just one or ALL of the sessions, you must pay full tuition. We do not have the administrative capability to do “a la carte” registrations. As noted in the answer to question # 2, ENCORE UNIVERSITY is like a reasonably priced “all you can eat” buffet. 4. If I purchase a registration for myself, can I share that registration with my friends who have not paid for their own registration? We respectfully request that you do NOT share the registration link with anyone. We ask that every person who wants to participate in these sessions pay for their own registration. This is what enables us to pay for the costs of running this program, including paying our wonderful administrative staff and our fabulous team of conductors. 5. Will all the programs be live? If I miss some of the programs, will I be able to go back and see them or revisit them at a later time? YES! While all class sessions will be live, they will be recorded and made available to you on a weekly basis to view at your convenience. 6. What equipment will I need to participate? Camera & microphone equipped laptop or desktop computer or tablet, e.g., iPad, or smart phone. Classes will be conducted via Zoom video conferencing software. The first time you use Zoom, you will need to download software in order to participate in the session. This is an automatic process. 7. Is there other software we could use other than Zoom?

We have researched this extensively. There is no other software at this time that can come any closer to meeting our needs, and in all cases, other systems are inferior to Zoom. By far, the software of choice in the choral world is Zoom. Encore participants have the option of enhancing the audio component of their Zoom rehearsal experience by purchasing JackTrip equipment. See page 17 of this catalog for more information on the new, cutting-edge JackTrip Technology.

8. When will the “Zoom” room open and close for each session?

The “Zoom” rooms will open not less than ten minutes BEFORE the start of each session. Participants will initially enter a waiting room and will be admitted to the class by a facilitator. Generally, at the discretion of the instructor, rooms may remain open for a few minutes AFTER each class concludes for people to ask questions or make com- ments via the “chat” function in Zoom. 11 Encore University Summer 2021 Course Catalog

Frequently Asked Questions 9. I’ve read things about Zoom. Is it safe?

No online activity, including email, web browsing, etc., is completely “safe.” However, Zoom has continued to implement security features, including waiting room, mandatory passwords and encrypted communications. Encore is abiding by all recommended security procedures. We feel confident using Zoom and you should, too. PLEASE NOTE: For added security, we must be able to identify you by first and last name when entering a class. Please ensure you display your name. The process to do this varies per the device you are using. Please consult online Zoom tutorials if you do not know how to display your name.

10. Do I need a computer and Zoom in order to participate in these classes?

No, you do NOT need Zoom to participate. If you don’t want or need to see the instructors, you can call in and just listen to each session on either a land-line telephone or a cell phone using telephone numbers we will provide to you. You do NOT have to have a computer or smart phone to participate in these classes, though it would enhance your experience. 11. When will we receive the “log-in” information for our sessions?

On the Friday before the class week, you will receive an email that contains a class ID and password that will apply to all classes that week. To simplify, the email will also contain links to each class. Simply click on the link at the appropriate time to enter the class. For security and control purposes, please do not share this information with others. This same exact email will be sent the following Monday morning before the first class of the week. 12. Can we join a class if we are late for it?

You must enter the “Zoom” room within the first 15 minutes after the class has begun or you may experience a delay in being admitted to the class. Our facilitators have other responsibilities during the class and cannot be constantly monitoring the waiting room 13. Is there a limit to class or rehearsal sizes? Can I be “shut out” of a class or rehearsal?

There is NO practical limit to class/rehearsal sizes. You can NOT be “shut out” of a class/rehearsal. 14. For the singing/rehearsal sessions will we be provided with sheet music and/or recordings of the music?

Yes. Once you have registered for the summer session, sheet music for Chorale, or ROCKS or both ensembles, de- pending on what you chose to participate in, will be mailed to you via USPS. In addition, you will be able to find help- ful practice recordings, including vocal part-predominate recordings, on the Encore website, which you will be able to download to your own computer or other electronic listening devices. CDs will NOT be created for this session. 15. Is all class content progressive or is any content repeated?

All class content progresses through the weeks of the class. Rehearsal sessions will build singing skills and knowledge of the music over the 4 weeks. All Chorale and ROCKS conductors will be rehearsing the same music, giving you the opportunity to experience their different rehearsal styles and content emphasis. 16. During a normal semester, our rehearsals culminate in a concert. As we cannot come together to perform, what will be the outcome of our rehearsals?

Unlike our 15-week online semesters in the fall and spring, this 4-week online summer semester will NOT culminate in any type of in-person or virtual performance. This summer session will be focused on education and fun rather than on performance 12 Encore University Summer 2021 Course Catalog

New Technology Enables Live Choral Singing Online

Beginning in January 2021, Encore implemented a ground-breaking new technology, developed by a nonprofit organization at Stanford University, that enables singers to rehearse online while hearing each other singers in real-time.

JackTrip Virtual Studio is a tool for musicians that enables them to produce music together over common internet connections. It delivers high-quality sound with a minimal time delay so that musicians can keep the beat and stay in harmony. It can make it sound like you are in the same room next to each other, even when you are actually hundreds of miles apart. The Virtual Studio service was originally developed for a chorus of over 200 members.

Encore University’s singers are given the option to use JackTrip Virtual Studio in conjunction with our normal Zoom rehearsals. Participants see each other on Zoom, as normal, but sound is transmitted via JackTrip. Participants who want to utilize the JackTrip technology are required to purchase a Virtual Studio device from the JackTrip Foundation for $150, which is above and beyond the regular Encore tuition. Participants will also need certain peripheral devices and must be able to connect the Virtual Studio device to the internet using a standard ethernet cable (the Virtual Studio device will not work on WiFi).

For more information on how to purchase and install this JackTrip technology in time for the first class of the Summer 2021 Encore University session, please contact Encore at [email protected].

You may obtain more detailed information on JackTrip’s website at: www.jacktrip.org/studio.html
