Specifically, it includes arrivals at El Paso, Texas, from May 1903 to June 1909; arrivals at Brownsville, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Laredo, Presidio, Rio Grande City, and Roma, Texas, from July 1906 to June 1909; and arrivals at Aros Ranch, Douglas, Lochiel, Naco, and Nogales, Arizona, July 1906–December 1910. Arrangement is chronological by year, then roughly chronological by quarter year, then by port of arrival. These records are part of the Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Record Group (RG) 85. Background Early records relating to immigration originated in regional customhouses. The U.S. Customs Service conducted its business by designating collection districts. Each district had a headquarters port with a customhouse and a collector of customs, the chief officer of the district. An act of March 2, 1819 (3 Stat. 489) required the captain or master of a vessel arriving at a port in the United States or any of its territories from a foreign country to submit a list of passengers to the collector of customs.

Such is the cautionary tale of the posh Café République, an extravagant enterprise that flourished for just a few years in downtown Washington in the 1910s, serving as a quintessential expression of the fragile exuberance of its times. In September 1911, a certain Maggie Mae sent this postcard to her friend Agnes Collins in Auburn, New York. She wrote: "Your pal Magie is---having one fine time. Just had luncheon at this cafe. Some class-Washington. Gee Agnes its a case of When Dreams Come True." (Author's collection.) In April 1910, a group of local investors organized as the Columbia Cafe Company to open the Café République in remodeled space at the northwest corner of the Corcoran Office Building, located at 15th and F Streets NW, across the street from the Treasury Department.

He then moved to Benicia, California where he served in the Finance & Accounting Department of the Benicia Arsenal, ultimately retiring as Chief Financial Officer in 1957 after 40 years. DUR•5'Gthe greater part of 1911 and up to September,1912, the author lived at Gatfin, Canal Zone, and nearly all Sundays and holidays (luring this period were spent in collectingand studying native birds. Naturally, many birds of the A. O. U. Check-List were observed, some resident in Panama and some transients or winter visitors. After July, 1911, records of the occurrence of suchhave beenkept as completelyas availabletime would allow. In many casesspecimens were taken as recorded.in the annotated list following. Gat fin is situated sevenmiles inland and directly south of Co16n, at the beginningof what are practically the first foot hills of the Isthmus. The coast-lineswings so far in just west of Co16n,how- ever, titat only three or four miles of low fiat land- some of it very marshy-- separatesGatfin from the bay. Indeed, salt water now comesup the old French canal, the East Diversion and the new American eanal, to the very door of Gatfin. The valley of the Rio Chagresis here about a mile and a half wide and is now, of course,filled acrossby the Gatfro locks,dam and spillway. This constructionwork has destroyedmuch cover,but on the other hand, the clearingsmade in and about the town of Gatfin and the partial filling of Gatfin lake have perhapsmade the locality more attractive to certain migrant birds from the north. To the south of Gatfin the ridgesdiverge rapidly with miles of the Black Swamp country stretchingbetween them and only a few thiekly grown knolls lessthan one hundred feet high scatteredhere and there.

Fairbanks Papers (M 0100) ACCESSION 1922.0001 NUMBER: NOTES: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Delavan Smith (1861–1922) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to newspaper publisher William Henry and Emaline Reynolds Smith. He was educated at Lake Forest (Illinois) Academy and Lake Forest University. Smith also earned an engineering degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was briefly employed as an engineer before following his father into the newspaper publishing field. Like his father, Delavan Smith was involved in several newspaper-related industries, including serving as vice-president for both the Oliver Typewriter Company and the Cox Multi-Mailer Corporation, which produced bundling machines for newspaper mailings. In addition to his newspaper ventures, Delavan Smith was an astute businessman with an estate worth over $2 million at the time of his death.

Owsley Archives & Manuscripts Unit Technical Services Section Date Completed: October 22, 1969 Accession Number: 1111 Location: I-H-1 INTRODUCTION The W. M. Adkins Account Books, 1909-1948, chronicle and reflect the operation of the general merchandise store of W. M. Adkins in Erin, Houston County, Tennessee. The collection was obtained through the agency of Miss Louise Davis, Children’s Museum, Nashville, Tennessee. The collection occupies 2.1 linear feet of shelf space and number 150 items and 12 volumes. There are no restrictions on the materials and single photocopies of unpublished writings may be made for purposes of scholarly or individual research. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection of accounts and account books is for the general merchandise store of William M. Adkins in Erin, Tennessee, for the dates 1909-1948. It is composed of twelve volumes of account books and approximately 150 items. The volumes contain inventory lists, daily accounts of sales, and payments received in cash and produce. The account books reflect that the store carried a great variety of merchandise, examples of which range from hardware to groceries, dry-goods, ready-to-wear, wire and cheese. There are some bills, notes, and receipts that include accounts for the schooling of Hubert Fulton Adkins at the John Locke School which later became the Morton Elliott Junior College located at Elkton, Kentucky. Hubert graduated at the Morton Elliott Junior College in 1922. He attended, for a short time, Southwestern Presbyterian University, Clarksville, Tennessee. Some business and personal correspondence for the years 1915-1962 make up the remainder of the collection.

The train was stopped and the conductor got back in time to hear the old woman say to her husband, as she sat there in a foot or two of mud: "Yon old fool, I told 3-on you couldn't make it!" Anotlicr illustration is a plain case of ignorance. Not long ago n \roman, taking her first ride on the cars, was on one of the Prisco flyers. When her station was called, she picked up her baby, walked out and jumped off the Past-moving train. Neither u-as hurt, but 1 guess the little intelligence she had was considerably shaken up, for she afterwards said "she 'lowed, when they called her town, it wns time to git off." But if there are some accidents that happen to be ludicrous, tlie majority are so very sad that we beg and implore for some movement to be started to get railroad men to be thinking to do away forever with carelessness. Be so determined to put an end to the mangling and maiming of men that in a very short time railroad accidents will be the rarest thing on record. Let us hope and pray that the time has come Pol. Frisco men to realize how much this safety movement is needed, and that it all de- pends on them to make it a grand -,L iccess. Good luck and speed results for safety first. They Are Not "Spotters."     Publication Number: M-617 Publication Title: Returns from U.S. Military Posts, 1800-1916 Date Published: 1968 RETURNS FROM U.S. MILITARY POSTS, 1800-1916 On the 1550 rolls of this microfilm publication, M617, are reproduced returns from U.S. military posts from the early 1800's to 1916, with a few returns extending through 1917. Most of the returns are part of Record Group 94, Records of the Adjutant General's Office; the remainder is part of Record Group 393, Records of United States Army Continental Commands, 1821-1920, and Record Group 395, Records of United States Army Overseas Operations and Commands, 1898-1942. The commanding officer of every post, as well ad commanders of all other bodies of troops such as department, division, brigade, regiment, or detachment, was required by Army Regulations to submit a return (a type of personnel report) to The Adjutant General at specified intervals, usually monthly, on forms provided by that office. Several additions and modifications were made in the form over the years, but basically it was designed to show the units that were stationed at a particular post and their strength, the names and duties of the officers, the number of officers present and absent, a listing of official communications received, and a record of events. In the early 19th century the form used for the post return usually was the same as the one used for regimental or organizational returns. Printed forms were issued by the Adjutant General’s Office, but more commonly used were manuscript forms patterned after the printed forms.
