The entire list is planned to be published as a Bishop Museum Technical Report. This list also includes other names that have been applied to Hawaiian foraminiferans. RESUMEN Se ofrecen los resultados de un inventario de las arañas del refugio de vida silvestre El cañón del río Gurabo, República Dominicana. Se registran 73 especies, 64 géneros y 32 familias para esta área protegida. Se amplía la distribución conocida de Yabisi guaba Rheims et Brescovit, 2004 (Hersiliidae), una especie endémica rara. Se comenta la distribución de las especies endémicas Antillena sp. y Pozonia sp., y la especie exótica invasora Cyrtophora citricola (Forskål, 1775). Se consideran como objetos de conservación del área protegida las siguientes 16 especies endémicas: Anasaitis elegantissima (Simon, 1888), Anelosimus fraternus Bryant, 1948, Antillena sp., Ariadna sp., Bolostromus sp., Cyrtopholis sp., Hentzia mandibularis (Bryant, 1943), Jollas crassus (Bryant, 1943), Modisimus cuadro Huber et Fischer, 2010, Modisimus sp., Odo sp., Pozonia sp., Selenops sp., Trichopelma sp., Truncattus sp., Yabisi guaba Rheims et Brescovit, 2004. However, knowledge about the biodiversity of natural enemies that may be useful as biocontrol agents is scarce. The objectives of this work were: (i) to study the diversity of predaceous arthropods; and (ii) to establish a suitable sampling protocol for arthropods of the almond tree canopy. Between April and October of 2007 and 2008, 25 randomly selected trees were sampled in an organic almond grove located in the north-east of Portugal using the beating technique. The specimens collected were counted and identified and the sampling pro- tocol was established by using the accumulation curves and the seasonal richness peaks of the most abundant groups of natural enemies. A total of 1856 and 1301 arthropods were captured, respectively, in 2007 and 2008, where Araneae, Coccinellidae and Formicidae were the most abundant groups. A total of 14 families and 29 species of spiders were identified as Linyphiidae, Philodromidae, Thomisidae, Araneidae and Oxyopidae, the five most abundant families in both years. -

New records of 43 spider species from the Mountain Zebra National Park, South Africa (Arachnida: Araneae) A.S. DIPPENAAR-SCHOEMAN Dippenaar-Schoeman, A.S. 2006. New records of 43 spider species from the Mountain Zebra National Park, South Africa (Arachnida: Araneae). Koedoe 49(2): 23–28. Pretoria. ISSN 0075-6458. Forty-three new spider species records have been added to the check list of spiders pub- lished in 1988 on the spiders of the Mountain Zebra National Park. An updated check list with information on the guilds, habitat preferences and web types are provided for the 34 families, 66 genera and 76 species presently known from the park. A total of 3.8 % of the spiders known from South Africa are presently protected in the park. Fourteen of the 34 families representing 35 species (46.1 %) are web builders and twenty-one families represented by 41 species (53.9 %) are wanderers. The Thomisidae are the most diverse family represented by 11 species. This is an inventory project of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA) for spiders in the Nama Karoo and conserved areas. Box 339, Bloemfontein 9300, South Africa Invertebrates include more than 80% of all animals, yet they are severely under-represented in studies of southern African diversity. Site biodiversity estimates that do not consider invertebrates, not only omit the greatest part of what they are attempting to measure, but also ignore major contributors to essential ecosystem processes. All available information on spider species distribution in the South African Savanna Biome was compiled. This is the largest biome in the country,occupying over one third of the surface area.A total of 1230 species represented by 381genera and 62 families are known from the biome. The last decade has seen an exponential growth in the knowledge of the group in South Africa, but there certainly are several more species that have to be discovered, and the distribution patterns of those listed are partly unknown. Information is summarized for all quarter degree squares of the biome and reveals considerable inequalities in knowledge. At a large scale the eastern region is much better surveyed than the western parts, but at smaller scales throughout the region, several areas have little information. -

Comparison of the Recent and Miocene Hispaniolan Spider Faunas
ARTÍCULO: COMPARISON OF THE RECENT AND MIOCENE HISPANIOLAN SPIDER FAUNAS David Penney & Daniel E. Pérez-Gelabert Abstract Hispaniolan (=Dominican Republic and Haiti) araneology is reviewed and a checklist of fossil (Miocene Dominican Republic amber) and Recent spiders is provided, with type data and recorder details for endemic taxa. The fossil fauna consists of 145 described species in 35 families and the Recent fauna, 296 species in 40 families. Twenty-nine families and 28 genera are shared, representing similarity values of 63.0% and 13.0% respectively. If the records for additional families (9) and genera (9) without formal species described are added, then these values become 68.0% and 15.5% respectively. No strictly fossil families are known, 25 genera are exclusively fossil and all species from the amber are extinct. The diversity (Shannon index) and evenness of species within ARTÍCULO: families is not significantly different between the faunas. Distinct similarities are observed between the fossil and Recent faunas in genus and species numbers for the Comparison of the Recent and families Pholcidae, Theridiidae and Corinnidae; dissimilarities are observed in Miocene Hispaniolan Spider Tetragnathidae, Araneidae and Salticidae. We consider the Recent fauna to be poorly faunas known and worthy of further investigation, particularly because of its potential, when compared with the fossil fauna, to address palaeoecological problems. Nothing was known on the biology or life history of this species, except that it produced spectacular flowers between September and October.
