Bull. Fla. Mus. Nat. Hist. (2003) 44(1): 131 -158 131 ZOOARCHAEOLOGY OF CINNAMON BAY, ST. JOHN, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS: PRE-COLUMBIAN OVEREXPLOITATION OF ANIMAL RESOURCES Irvy R. Quitmyeri The zooarchaeological remains from a stratigraphic sequence excavated from the ceremonial site of Cinnamon Bay, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, were studied. The samples were recovered using a fine-gauge (1/16 in) screen. During the course of this study, 443 minimum numbers of individuals and 99 species of vertebrates and invertebrates were identified. The fauna was analyzed by estimating the trophic level of reef, inshore, and pelagic zooarchaeological components from three strata representing the Monserrate (ca. A.D. 950), Santa Elena (ca. A.D. 570), and Chican (ca. A.D. 460) ceramic periods. The trophic level model shows an initial increase in the trophic level of taxa from the reef between the Monserrate and Santa Elena periods. This initial increase corresponds to the exponential growth of midden density. Relative to the earlier faunal assemblages, midden density and the mean trophic level of reef resources declines during the Chican period. Greater reliance on pelagic species from the deeper waters offshore and the increased use of mollusks from inshore habitats is also seen. The data show that at low levels of cultural complexity humans can alter their environments. This is particularly true of island biota where biological reservoirs are small. ABSTRACT The annotated checklist on the extant terrestrial mollusks from Hispaniola Island based on literature from 1758 to 2020 is here presented. We report 612 taxa distributed in three subclasses, 129 genera and 39 families. The most representative families are Annulariidae with 26 genera and 233 species, and Urocoptidae with 14 genera and 104, respectively. As more information is produced from the different families reported, these numbers can vary considerably. Keywords: terrestrial mollusks, Hispaniola, bibliographic review. RESUMEN Se presenta la lista anotada de los moluscos terrestres vivientes de la isla de La Hispaniola basada en literatura desde 1758 a 2020. Se reportan 612 táxones distribuidos en tres subclases, 129 géneros y 39 familias. Las familias más representativas son Annulariidae con 26 géneros y 233 especies, y Urocoptidae con 14 y 104, respectivamente. En la medida que se produzca más información de las diferentes familias, estos números pueden variar considerablemente. -

Willig∗2 ∗ Ecology Program, Department of Biological Sciences and The Museum, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas 79409-3131, USA (Accepted 16 August 2005) Abstract: Large-scale natural disturbances, such as hurricanes, can have profound effects on animal populations. Nonetheless, generalizations about the effects of disturbance are elusive, and few studies consider long-term responses of a single population or community to multiple large-scale disturbance events. In the last 20 y, two major hurricanes (Hugo and Georges) have struck the island of Puerto Rico. Long-term population trends of 17 species of terrestrial gastropod were evaluated to determine whether gastropods respond to hurricane disturbances in a consistent fashion. Some species increased, some decreased, and some exhibited no simple trend in density or spatial variability following disturbance. In addition, some species responded differently to the two hurricanes with respect to population density, absolute spatial variability, or relative spatial variability. Population responses probably hinge on trade-offs between sensitivity to microclimatic changes and resource availability resulting from the relocation of biomass from the canopy to the forest floor. The historical context within which a hurricane occurs may be as important, or more so, than the intensity of the storm, per se. A cladistic analysis is presented using an ingroup com- posed of representatives of the three subfamilies distributed in Australia and 52 other species with American dis- tribution. Bradybaenidae, Helicidae and Helminthoglyptidae were used as outgroups. Fifty morphological characters were treated as unordered and analysed using Pee-Wee ver. 2.9, a program for parsimony analysis using implied weights. The results of the analysis support Camaenidae as a monophyletic family (synapomorphies: oval genital ori- fice, absence of penial sheath). Two of the three Australasian subfamilies, Sinumeloninae and Camaeninae, are monophyletic in the strict consensus tree. The American taxa are classified in eight genera and arranged into two main clades. Caracolus is proposed as the sister group of the American Continental Camaenidae. The genus Solaropsis, previously excluded from this family by different authors, is reassigned to Camaenidae. Shell characters proved to be phylogenetically informative in defining Pleurodonte, Caracolus, Solaropsis, Isomeria and Labyrinthus. -
