GLOUCESTER ACADEMY BELONG BELIEVE STRIVE ACHIEVE Term 6 Ends Friday 19th July 2019 1.35pm Term 1 Wednesday 4th September—Year 7 & 11. Thursday 5th Septemer—All year groups INTERIM PRINCIPAL Dear Parent or Carer, I can’t believe it’s summer time already, the six week holiday is just around the corner and I’ve come to the end of my 21st year in teaching! As with every year in education, there are highs and lows, but it is always the students who put a smile on your face, say something you’re not expecting or show you just how hard they have been working. Over the year we have collectively shown, through many challenges, the resilience and determination to move the academy forward in our journey to remove ourselves from special measures. Many of the students have applied themselves well, attended each day and shown an excellent attitude in all they have done. The staff at Gloucester Academy have worked tirelessly to ensure we have the facilities each day to learn in; lessons that challenge our young people and activities where by students can experience new opportunities. There is still much to do and I am confident that our collaborative approach will continue to enhance the next steps of the academy. I would also like to thank the many parents/ carers who have supported the academy over the year. Without your commitment to us, we would not be able to achieve the things we can with your son/ daughter. As you will already know, Mr Paul Holroyd will be the permanent Principal of Gloucester Academy from September as I step down from being the Interim Principal. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in this position, but will venture onto new pastures myself from September. I will be leaving Gloucester Academy and returning to working in special schools, something very close to my heart and is a real passion of mine. Mr Holroyd will write to you in September to set out his vision for the academy. To end, I hope you all have a fantastic summer, enjoying the time with friends and family. I wish everyone all the very best for the future. Many Thanks Andy Vinton Interim Principal MathsMaths A huge well done to the many students that have worked with Miss Kawecka this year; we hope you’ve enjoyed working on your numeracy skills and are seeing the benefits in all your lessons - the number of black belts has been amazing! Well done to our first Numeracy Ambassadors Nicolas Horvat, Brian Kutnar, Adam Ferenc and Veronika Szeifova. The effort and dedication you have been putting in to the after school sessions with Mrs Veness and Mr Maguire, and also to promote numeracy with your peers has been incredible – keep up the great work! Congratulations to Julia Dabrowska, Lauren Walmsley, Jenson Griffiths and Imran Ali who all achieved a Bronze certificate in the Junior Maths Challenge – what a fantastic achievement! We can’t wait to see how you and your peers do next year! The maths department have been running a weekly Magic Maths Star award relating to the positive points students have been awarded during their maths lessons. To reward students for their hard work and dedication in lessons the maths department took 30 students to Chepstow Racecourse on a race day! The students learnt a lot about the race horse industry and the maths involved. We hope to be taking another group next year so watch this space! YEAR 9 Year 9s had the opportunity to attend the University of Gloucestershire for an all-day ‘taster’ event, during the day they had the chance to take part in a variety of university style lectures and seminars on their chosen subjects. The taster sessions included seminars on computer science, game design, photography, inclusive sport and even criminology! The students were a credit to the academy and it was fantastic to see our young people thrive and become inspired to strive forward into year 10 and plan their futures. Congratulations to Hermione Tinton, Harrison Jones and Kyle Mills who graduated from their steps to success programme whereby they have completed individual projects with University PHD students. I’m excited to see what year 10 brings for us as a year group, super proud! Miss Exton LANGUAGES Students in Year 7 have been asked this term to choose which language, French or Spanish, that they wish to study until the end of Year 9. After their end of year exams, students in KS3 are enjoying researching about French or Spanish speaking countries. We look forward to their presentations! A group of year 9 students recently spent the day practising their Spanish language skills with around 60 other students from local schools. The event, hosted by Denmark Road High School for Girls, started with a guest speaker from Bristol University to talk about language degree options and the career choices available to students who study languages. Students were excited to find out that those who graduate with a degree in a language are more likely to be employed and more likely to earn a higher salary after university. There were also engaging activities and competitions based around Spanish films and Spanish music, giving students the opportunity to learn more about the language and culture they have been studying. HUMANITIES Humanities has had a fantastic year and would like to take this time to congratulate all those who sat their Geography, History and Business Studies GCSE's this year. We are looking forward to working closely with next years Year 11 to empower them to reach their full potential. We have finished the year on an all time high, with a successful trip to Lulworth Cove and two further trips to Warwick Castle and Alton Towers. We wish all GA students a lovely summer and look forward to seeing everyone back after a restful summer. Mrs Crotty (Head of Humanities) ADU It has been a very busy year for ADU students. The Prince’s Trust groups have finished their portfolios which have now been entered for qualifications, they packed in a lot of good life skills, cooking, keeping safe, teambuilding, communication, First Aid, self esteem, building resilience, and clay modelling.. Also the garden club worked with the Wildlife Trust and have entered their portfolios too. The garden is looking fabulous and we hope to work on it more next year and involve the community. We finished off the year with a reward trip to Mr Mulligans World of Golf in Cheltenham. They all had a great time and were a credit to our school. D&T Well done to the two groups of year 10 students that participated in the Rotary Club Engineering competition in June. Both groups did extremely well, with one group getting a special mention for the quality of their portfolio. LIBRARY ‘On the 10th of July a group of students visited Waterstones Bookshop as a reward for being placed in the top 10 of most words read in the Accelerated Reader scheme we implement in Gloucester Academy. Students were awarded vouchers and a certificate to celebrate this success. This year has been spectacularly amazing with 4 students reaching the Accelerated Reader Millionaires Club. The top ten were Erin Jordan 7,017,084, Faith Jordan 3,873,988, Leigh Gwilliam 2, 729,777, Aaqib Mulla 2,477,812, Fatima Kholwadia 818,373, Paige Bond 712,231, Taylor Powell 704,260, Ayesha-Maria Patel 646,769, Dylan Griffiths 610,741, and Luke Birt 485, 234 words read. A special congratulations to each and every one to reach these amazing totals. DISTRICT ATHLETICS On a warm day in June, 72 athletes represented GA for the Gloucester District Athletics event at Prince of Wales stadium in Cheltenham. There were notable performances on both the track and in the field events. Karl Tchibe in year 7 came 2nd in the boys 100m and will go to County trials next June for U13 representation. Chenai Watts also ran a great race in the 100m and came 3rd in the Shot Putt. All athletes were a credit to GA. LIBRARYSPORTS DAY Sports Day 2019 Pegasus had won Sports Day for the past 4 years so this year the 3 other house – Phoenix, Centaurus and Aquila had a point to prove. In several events including the new addition of Boccia, pupils set out in good team spirit and competiveness overseen by the sports captains who had completed a wonderful job over the previous three weeks of assembling the teams. The morning events went well with notable performances in the Javelin – Demba Sabally and the ever competitive year 10 boys – Paul, Tyrike and Jurrell. The newly named game of Welsh Rounders in honour of Mr Prout saw some excellent fielding and some cut throat umpiring decisions. The morning activities finished and the event turned to the track for the sprints in the afternoon. Scores tight, it meant the houses needed a runner in every event and to be on top form. It went all the way down to the relays, but over the day one house had performed consistently, and there was to be a new name on the shield – Aquila. Well done to all the athletes for taking part and having fun on the day. Looking forward to future house matches in this spirit. EAL As-salamu alaykum Hello Ciao Ola!
