The heroes we produce for our children are meant to function as their idealized cultural models, teaching them the positive value of specific embodied traits. This extends to gender: the gendered ideological statements made by these heroic characters promote a gendered cultural ideal. Traditionally, academics interested in female gender representation and children’s television have focused on shows targeting young girls. However, it is just as important to examine the representation of the heroic women in television shows aimed at young boys. Young boys grow into adult men and, in our patriarchal society, male expectations of women play largely into their expectations of themselves. Therefore, the heroines of series marketed at young boys represent the ideal cultural models of empowered femininity, influencing the expectations and criteria these boys will have for “strong” women as they grow into politically powerful men. With all this in mind, it then becomes important to examine these models of ideal empowered femininity. By examining the token females in American animated action/adventure team-based television series marketed toward young boys over the past 30 years (starting with Super Friends in the late 70s, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, ThunderCats, and G.I.

    Mutantkind in the World of Darkness by the Poet Updated 2011/02/13 His eyes opened involuntarily, as they had for thousands of previous days, but this time it was a little harder than before. The eyelids pressed resolutely open through the green gel that surrounded him in the tank, and he drew his first conscious breath. The gel that he was forced to breathe was so thick that it was dangerous to inhale too quickly, or with too much force. Slowly, gently. In and out. Keep the heartbeat low. Naturally, his heartrate spiked as soon as his eyes focused on the room beyond the tank, the lab in which he was suspended. While the speaker wasn't turned on (and the gel naturally absorbed sound), he couldn't hear the commotion. He could, however, see another tank being smashed from the outside. And in so doing, changed the sta­ tus quo of the entire Marvel super­ hero line. Before I explain that, though, I need to explain this "Krakoa" busi­ ness for those who don't read X-Men books regularly. And the story of Where We Are Now and How It Came to Be is, like all things X-Men, ridiculously complicated. The TLDR is that Earth's mutants have entered into a symbiosis with the living island Krakoa, first intro­ duced in Ciant-Size X-Men #1 in 1975. All of Earth's mutants - heroes and villains alike - have resettled on Krakoa, currently in the South Atlantic, declaring it a sovereign nation.

ABSTRACT My work tracks the role of the American South and Southern characters in Marvel Comics, from 1963 to 2016. This thesis spring from a simple question: how stereotypical does this Northern industry portray the American South? To achieve this goal, I read plenty of comics, applying literary theory (such as Patricia Yeager and Tara McPherson) as well as American cultural studies (1980s televangelism and the history of human trafficking in America) to my findings. After reading multiple comic books from multiple sources, I settled on four different texts, each with a unique approach to portraying the South: the portrayal of the Southern environment in Amazing Spider-Man and Adventure into Fear, the use of metaphorical Southerners in God Loves, Man Kills, the changing depiction of Marvel's premier Southern character Rogue in two limited series she stars in, and the portrayal of a modern, urban, South in the series Scarlet Spider.

But has anyone stopped to consider that maybe you just wanna watch MTV? Syllabus People read comics – especially Marvel Comics – because of the characters. More than the costumes, more than the powers, and sometimes even more than the plots, the characters are what keep readers coming back every month. Chris Claremont’s excellent characterization on UNCANNY X-MEN set the standard by which all other X-titles would be measured. Peter David’s short run on X-FACTOR is still talked about because of his characterizations. And Joe Kelly is getting high praise for his character interactions in X-MEN. In order to get people really excited about GENERATION X again, we don’t need any earth-shattering events, or a brand new status quo. We just need to get back to the heart of this book – a book about a group of students, learning about themselves, and their place in a world that fears and hates them. With a renewed focus on the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters and the introduction of two new characters, we can take GENERATION X to the next level. Student Bodies In order to focus on the school, we must first reestablish that GENERATION X is not a super-hero team – they’re students. Over time, the kids seem to have gotten too complacent, and have been getting along entirely too well.
