CLELAND, J.B. (John Burton) PRG 5 Series List

John Burton Cleland (1878-1971), son of William Lennox Cleland, Resident Medical Officer at the Parkside Lunatic Asylum, was Government Microbiologist in Sydney in 1909-1920, where he made a significant contribution to experimental epidemiology, and Marks Professor of Pathology at the University of 1920-1948, during which time he methodically collected the results of more than 7,000 autopsies conducted by him at the Royal Adelaide and Repatriation Hospitals, and was recognised for his expertise in macroscopic and microscopic pathology.

From his youth, J.B. Cleland showed great interest in natural history, particularly fungi, and in later years this interest continued and extended to the fields of ornithology, anthropology, and wildlife conservation. He was also particularly interested in Cleland family genealogy, and amassed considerable material on Cleland ancestors for the history ‘The Ancient Family of Cleland’, published in 1905.

J.B. Cleland’s contribution to medicine and natural history was widely recognised, and he received many honours during his life time, including a knighthood in 1964, and the naming after him of Cleland Wildlife Reserve (later Cleland National Park) in 1967. He was a member of the Royal Society of South Australia for 75 years and of the National Park Commission from 1927-1969, and was active on the (South Australian) Aboriginal Affairs Board and the Board of Anthropological Research at the for many years.

Each of these interests is reflected in the J.B. Cleland papers (1626-1971), which contain a large volume of correspondence (including letters from some of the most eminent pathologists, biologists and anthropologists of the time), notes and manuscript articles on medical, natural history and anthropological subjects (series 15-20), and genealogy (series 26-34), covering almost the whole span of J.B. Cleland’s long and active life. The collection also includes many photographs of Cleland family members, photographs of historical importance taken on various expeditions, ca.1907-1957, and the private papers of J.B. Cleland, his wife Dora Isabel Cleland (nee Paton) and their children.

A more detailed appreciation of J.B. Cleland may be found in the Royal Society of South Australia obituary of 1971, of which there are copies in series 14. ______
