As you can tell from these photographs, we are welcoming many different science disciplines and educational outreach groups to participate in our Museum programming in 2010 – many for the first time! And we hope “Archie” will look down on ever more variety to come. Astronomy Day, our annual event highlighting physics, astronomy, space and planetary sciences and meteorite studies, was again very successful on April 24, drawing 629 visitors. Volunteers from the Prairie Astronomy Club welcomed a constant stream of young people checking out the impressive telescopes arrayed at “Archie’s” feet in Elephant Hall, and the rest of the Museum was filled with science activity stations designed to appeal to visitors of all ages. The next issue of the Mammoth will have a full report on Astronomy Day. On Sunday April 18, “Archie” oversaw stations on endangered and invasive species, featuring presenters from the Nebraska Invasive Species Project and the Tern and Plover Conservation Partnership. On the third Sunday each month, we are offering new family science programming through “Sunday with Scientists,” featuring a different science A member of the Prairie Astronomy Club discusses discipline or issue each time. Earlier events have included telescopes with Astronomy Day visitors in Elephant Hall nanoscience, water resources and paleontology. Don’t miss on April 24. the photos from all the Sunday events that are now posted on the Museum’s new Facebook page. Next up in May and June are Sundays on “Nebraska’s Climate” and “Ponds and Toxic Algae.” It was a special treat for me to welcome “Pebbles,” the giant Piping Plover, making a first visit to Morrill Hall. Diane Pratt, a member of the Friends of the State Museum Board who also volunteers for the Tern and Plover Conservation Partnership, first told me about this organization. The partnership headquarters are in Hardin Hall on UNL’s East Campus, and the program works with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, industry, private citizens, government agencies and scientists to protect Nebraska’s Interior Least Terns and Piping Plovers. The Partnership celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2009, and for the occasion held a naming contest for the newest member of their educational outreach team: a 4-foot tall giant piping plover made of feathers, metal and fiberglass by Tom Curtwright in Lincoln. I can assure you that “Pebbles” was right at home in front of the sand bars in the Archie mural by Mark Marcuson! In this issue you will find a special notice on page 2 about the new Campaign for Nebraska.
