MISSION & PURPOSE MISSION STATEMENT: Conservation: To protect North Carolina’s natural diversity through careful selection and stewardship of state parks system lands; Recreation: To provide and promote outdoor recreation opportunities in the state parks system and throughout the state; and Education: To encourage appreciation of North Carolina’s natural and cultural heritage through diverse educational opportunities; for all citizens of and visitors to the State of North Carolina. Our purpose: The 1987 State Parks Act defines the purposes of the state parks system. It establishes that: The State of North Carolina offers unique archaeologic, geologic, biologic, scenic and recreational resources. These resources are part of the heritage of the people of this State. The heritage of a people should be preserved and managed by those people for their use and for the use of their visitors and descendants. PARK PURPOSE: Lake James was developed for hydroelectric purposes by Duke Power Company in 1923. Lake James State Park was established in 1987, becoming the first North Carolina State Park created under the provisions of the State Parks Act of 1987. It is also the first park in the history of the state to receive funds for acquisition, development, and operation upon its creation. The park serves residents and visitors of North Carolina by providing opportunities for appropriate outdoor recreational use; providing the ability and facilities for viewing and enjoying the major scenic values of the area; protecting wildlife and natural communities within its boundaries; and providing interpretive and environmental programs that allow visitors to learn about the significant resources of the area. -

Cherokee County
Cherokee County - The Roads to Kings Mountain Two hundred forty years ago, during the first week of October, 1780, what is now Cherokee County was the site of im- portant events in the American Revolutionary War. During that week, both a British Loyalist Army and an American Patriot Army traveled across the county on their way to do battle at Kings Mountain. The American victory at the Bat- tle of Kings Mountain on October 7 is thought by many historians to be the turning point in the War. The British Army, under Major Patrick Ferguson, had been in North Carolina in the vicinity of Gilbert Town. He had sent a warning to the mountaineers living across the Blue Ridge. He had threatened that if they did not cease opposing the British forces, he would cross the mountains and destroy them with fire and sword. This threat had been like pour- ing gasoline on a fire. Instead of being intimidated, the mountaineers decided to gather an army and destroy Ferguson. Ferguson soon had gotten word that a sizable Patriot Army was coming after him. He decided to retreat south and join British General Cornwallis who was in Charlotte. He did not make it to Charlotte. He marched across Cherokee Coun- ty, camping several times. He crossed the Broad River at Tate’s Plantation and Ferry on October 5. After traveling about 15 miles from the Broad River, he stopped the Army and camped on top of Kings Mountain in what is today, York County. The “Overmountain Men” had been joined by militia from Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia. -

Updated Fall 2016 1 Story of North Carolina – Educator’s Guide The earth was formed about 4,500 million years (4.5 billion years) ago. The landmass under North Carolina began to form about 1,700 million years ago, and has been in constant change ever since. Continents broke apart, merged, then drifted apart again. After North Carolina found its present place on the eastern coast of North America, the global climate warmed and cooled many times. The first single-celled life-forms appeared as early as 3,800 million years ago. As life-forms grew more complex, they diversified. Plants and animals became distinct. Gradually life crept out from the oceans and took over the land. The ancestors of humans began to walk upright only a few million years ago, and our species, Homo sapiens, emerged only about 120,000 years ago. The first humans arrived in North Carolina approximately 14,000 years ago—and continued the process of environmental change through hunting, agriculture, and eventually development. -

BY DEAN A. DEROSA In the morning room and in the second-floor hall ofArlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial (the US National Park Service historical site on the grounds ofArlington National Cemetery), hang two framed engravings, entitled "The British Surrendering their Arms to Gen. Washington after their Defeat at Yorktown in Virginia, October 1781." The two art pieces, first published in 1819, are drawn by John Francis Renault and engraved by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. The morning room engraving is in color, while the second floor engraving is inscribed in black ink (Figure 1). The caption at the base of the two engravings reads, "To the defenders of American independence, this print is most respectfully inscribed by their fellow citizen, Jn. Fcis. Renault, assistant secretary to the Count de Grass, and engineer to the French Army, at the siege of York." Thus, the twin engravings are drawn by a participant in the Siege of Yorktown, if not also a witness to the historic British surrender and subsequent surrender ceremony, which for all intents and purposes ended major hostilities during the American Revolution. The allegorical background of the engravings depicts not only the field upon which the British, Continental, and French armies stood during the sur render ceremony, but also a number of classical images and symbols of human discord, victory, and liberty, described in an 1804 prospectus apparently in reference to an early, circa 1810-1815 version of the Renault drawing (Figure 2) upon which the published engraving would eventually be based, that are largely lost upon us today. -
Influence of Cavity Availability on Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Group Size

KEITH ’ ABSTRACT-The availability of cavities can determine whether territories are occupied by Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (Picoides borealis). However, there is no information on whether the number of cavities can influence group size and population stability. We compared group size between 1993 and 1995 in 33 occupied cluster sites that were provisioned with artificial cavities. The number of groups with breeding pairs increased from 22 (67.7%) in 1993 to 28 (93.3%) in 1995. Most breeding males remained in the natural cavities that they had excavated and occupied prior to cavity provisioning in the cluster while breeding females and helpers used artificial cavities extensively. Active cluster sites provisioned with artificial cavities had larger social groups in 1995 (3 = 2.70, SD = 1.42) than in 1993 (3 = 2.00, SD = 0.94; Z = -2.97, P = 0.003). The number of suitable cavities per cluster was positively correlated with the number of birds per cluster (rJ = 0.42, P = 0.016). The number of inserts per cluster was positively correlated with the change in group size between 1993 and 1995 (r, = 0.49, P = 0.004). Our observations indicate that three or four suitable cavities should be maintained uer cluster to stabilize and/or increase Red-cockaded Woodpecker populations. Who Were South Carolina's Turkish People

WHO WERE SOUTH CAROLINA’S TURKISH PEOPLE? GENETICS AND GENEALOGY HELP SOLVE A TWO-HUNDRED-YEAR-OLD MYSTERY By Glen Browder and Terri Ann Ognibene South Carolina has always been an intriguing place for research on regional and national history. Most commonly, the Palmetto State has been scrutinized and depicted through a binary lens of racial supposition; and there is an all too often conception of this state as an eternal realm of black-and-white society. However, the reality is that South Carolina has experienced surprising richness in its ethnic origins and evolving culture over many generations. As demonstrated by Walter Edgar, the state’s premier chronicler, before the Europeans there were as many as forty different Indian nations; and by the end of the eighteenth century there were at least twenty-five West African ethnicities and nine European ethnic groups. “Thus South Carolina’s population is a rich mosaic, a variety of people from three continents. Over the centuries the interaction of these peoples produced a culture that made South Carolina a special place.”1 Of particular pertinence to our project, historian James W. Hagy pinpointed South 1 Carolina's rich diversity prior to the Civil War. Hagy wrote that one could find non-Europeans and non-Christians with exotic ethnic backgrounds, including Muslim slaves, abducted Moors, African Jews, and even "misnamed Turks" who contributed to the state's early experience. -

PREFACE In this work we have attempted a brief summary of the important events connected with the history of St. Augus- tine and in so doing we must necessarily present the more important facts connected with the history of Fort Marion. The facts and dates contained herein are in accordance with the best authority obtainable. The Historical Society has a large collection of rare maps and books in its Library, one of the best in the State ; the Public Library has also many books on the history of Florida. The City and County records (in English) dating from 1821 contain valuable items of history, as at this date St. Johns County comprised the whole state of Florida east of the Suwannee River and south of Cow's Ford, now the City of Jacksonville. The Spanish records, with a few exceptions, are now in the city of Tallahassee, Department of Agriculture ; the Manuscript Department, Library of Congress, Washington. D. C. and among the "Papeles de Cuba" Seville, Spain. Copies of some very old letters of the Spanish Governors. with English translations, have been obtained by the Historical Society. The Cathedral Archives date from 1594 to the present day. To the late Dr. DeWitt Webb, founder, and until his death, President of the St. Augustine Institute of Science and Historical Society, is due credit for the large number of maps and rare books collected for the Society; the marking and preservation of many historical places ; and for data used in this book.
