UMUC EUROPE COMMENCEMENT 4 MAY 2019 In 1949, the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) was the only pioneering institution to send seven professors to teach military students in postwar Germany. This deep–rooted tradition of serving the military in war and peace continues to this day. This year, we are proud to celebrate our 70th year of delivering higher education overseas to U.S. military servicemembers and their families, exemplified through the incredible achievements of our students. CELEBRATING 70 YEARS OVERSEAS UMUC was founded in 1947 as the College of Special and Continuation Studies, a branch of the University of Maryland's College of Education, with locations in College Park and around the state. In 1949, UMUC became the first university to send faculty overseas to educate active-duty military personnel in Europe. What started off as a noble experiment, with seven professors in six cities in Germany, has turned into a globally-recognized, award-winning institution that includes graduates from all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and over 20 countries and territories worldwide. UMUC Europe is proud to be in a continued partnership with the U.S. government and the state of Maryland to provide quality education to 14,000 students annually in 17 countries and 50+ locations in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. We are wherever the military is, whether permanently stationed or deployed. Times have changed since those first classes in war-torn buildings 70 years ago. Now we deliver courses both on-site and online using cutting-edge technology, tailored class schedules for individual military units, and innovative live streaming formats at many locations.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT As the Father has sent me, so I send you. John 20:21 Missio (Latin, nom.) – sent. Mission, derived from the Latin missionem, mission from mittere “to send.” The Northwest Catholic story is a story of a journey – a journey that we hope will be a transformative experience for the maturing young adults who come here to learn, but also to grow in their relationship with God and others. At the start of each year, we introduce a theme that is woven into the academic and co-curricular program. This year, we are focusing on the jubilee celebration of the apostle Paul. In this well-known story, Paul reaches a critical point in his personal journey, a point where he is brought into a relationship with God and then is sent out into the world to spread the Good News. He is brought in, transformed, then sent out. Paul’s complete conversion represents a radical transformation in his life. For most of us, understanding how God calls us to our true selves is an incremental journey. The young men and women who join us follow a four-year journey through a unique Northwest Catholic culture where they can better understand how they are called to serve this world. We assist them in their journey by challenging them intellectually, physically, creatively, socially, and spiritually. We also encourage them to see how service to others is an essential ingredient in their ultimate journey -- a full and rich life. The Class of 2012, drawn from 33 towns, enters into a social climate composed of different races, religions, ethnicities, economic backgrounds, and social structures.

3/21/2019 Arab pilot seeks bail as FBI asks for time - Telegraph Arab pilot seeks bail By Richard Alleyne 12:01AM GMT 28 Nov 2001 as FBI asks for time THE Algerian pilot accused of training the September 11 hijackers will go to the High Court to seek release from custody after the American authorities failed to provide key evidence against him. Despite FBI claims that Lotfi Raissi was the "lead instructor" in the attacks, it has failed to present any proof to the British courts in the two months since he was placed in custody facing extradition, it was claimed yesterday. As a magistrate extended his stay in prison once more, his lawyers said they would seek bail at the High Court, describing his treatment as a "gross abuse of the court". Hugo Keith, for Raissi, said: "His treatment at the hands of the US government has been nothing short of outrageous. They have palpably and openly failed to deliver any evidence. The twists and turns, and the way in which he has been kept in custody is a gross abuse of the court." He added: "He was detained on the basis that evidence was forthcoming. That evidence has not been forthcoming. It is disgraceful." Raissi was arrested with his wife Sonia, 25, and brother Mohammed, 29, at his flat in Colnbrook, near Slough, Bucks, on Sept 23. His wife, who works at Heathrow, and brother were later released. The FBI, which is seeking extradition of Raissi, issued a warrant at an earlier hearing alleging that he twice lied in an application for a pilot's licence.

PRESS RELEASE - 19 May 2021 LAPG announces Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year awards 2021 finalists A housing barrister who is playing a leading role in challenging 'No DSS' landlords; and a solicitor who defended the parents of 'Jihadi Jack' Letts, have been honoured by this year's LALY awards judges. The pair are among 26 individuals and nine organisations chosen as finalists in the Legal Aid Practitioners Group 2021 Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year awards. 2021 sees the introduction of a new Disability Rights award: finalists selected for this inaugural award are: Amy Butler, Atkins & Palmer; Kate Jackson, MJC Law; and Kirsty Stuart, Irwin Mitchell. Chris Minnoch, CEO of LAPG, which organises the LALY awards on a not-for-profit basis to celebrate the work of social justice lawyers, says: ‘This year's finalists give an insight into the range, depth and breadth of the incredible life- changing work that social justice lawyers do - and the vital role they play in ensuring access to justice for individuals, families and communities. It is testimony to the importance of the LALY awards to the legal aid sector that we had a bumper crop of compelling and inspiring nominations this year - despite the extreme pressures we are all facing due to the pandemic.’ Finalists in the Legal Aid Barrister category are: Tessa Buchanan (Garden Court Chambers), recognised for a run of cases establishing that banning DSS tenants is discriminatory against women and disabled people; Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh (Matrix Chambers), who helped overturn the convictions of the 'Stansted 15' protestors; and Stephen Lue (Garden Court Chambers), praised for his skilful handling of complex child abduction cases.

Mednick and Peck: Proportionality: A Much-Needed Solution to the Accountants' Legal Articles PROPORTIONALITY: A MUCH-NEEDED SOLUTION TO THE ACCOUNTANTS' LEGAL LIABILITY CRISIS* ROBERT MEDNICK" JEFFREY J. PECK- I. INTRODUCTION A fundamental precept of American jurisprudence is the apportionment of liability based on fault, with culpable parties paying their fair share of damages. As logical and fair as that proposition appears, it is increasingly the exception rather than the rule in some areas of litigation, particularly federal securities fraud litigation against certified public accountants. Achieving equitable outcomes by relating the degree of liability to the proportion of damages or settlements paid is nearly impossible in most such cases. By mandating joint and several liability, federal securities laws and some state laws encourage suits against "deep pocket" defendants, such as accounting firms, for the sole purpose of extracting settlements from those parties, regardless of their actual responsibility, if any, for the losses suffered.
