This is the fourth major entry in the video game fairy tale series, and a direct sequel to 1997's Tales of Destiny. It was released on PlayStation 2 (PS2) in November 2002 in Japan, in March 2003 in Korea and in August 2003 in China. Foreign versions were published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The updated PlayStation Portable (PSP) port, developed by Alfa System, was released in February 2007 and in Korea in March of that year. This version was published by Namco Bandai Games. None of the versions received a Western release. The story, set eighteen years after Destiny, Kyle Danays, son of the main characters of the previous game Steel Euleron and Ruthie Catrea. Shortly after meeting a mysterious girl named Real, trying to save Ruthie's orphanage from bankruptcy, Kyle is drawn into conflict with Barbatos, the brutal warrior responsible for the murder of Steen, and the machinations of Elrain, a religious leader seeking to bring peace to humanity. The gameplay uses two-dimensional sprites and character backgrounds, and the combat system is an updated version of the Linear Motion Battle System. Development began after the release of Tales of Eternia in 2000, took about two years, and was the last Tales game that was developed by the original Wolfteam before it became Namco Tales Studio. The script was written by the Japanese writer Gekko, the characters were developed by Mutsumi Inomata, and the music was written by Motoa Sakuraba and Shinji Tamura. The PSP port was created after the similar port of Ethernia was commercially successful. It was a highly anticipated game, and Namco actively promoted it a few months before its release. By January 2003, more than 700,000 copies had been sold, and it had received critical acclaim from both Japanese and Western critics. Gameplay Screenshots battle as they appear in PlayStation 2 (above) and PlayStation Portable (bottom) version of the game. Tales of Destiny 2 is a role-playing video game with two-dimensional (2D) sprites floating on both 2D environments such as dungeons and cities, and on three-dimensional overhead world. The otherworld has an ecological effect, such as fog. In cities around the world, unplayable characters provide both information relevant to history and the world, as well as providing items and equipment through stores; Merchants accept the currency of the Fairy Tale series, Gald, Jp. 1 which can be obtained from a battle or treasure chests on the dungeon and maps of the city. Throughout the game, visiting certain people in cities will activate additional activities and side quests. Prisons, sewerage systems, forests and places oriented to history serve as places of the dungeon; these areas are scattered with treasure chests containing rare items, some of which cannot be purchased in stores. Dungeons often contain puzzles and mazes, such as boxes, that need to be refocused on forming a bridge that needs to be cleared to advance; The sorcerer's ring, a relic that shoots tiny plumes of fire, often plays a central role in solving puzzles, along with the Wizard's Sphere, a tool that shows hidden objects. Aspects of the characters, such as their current level of experience, equipment and level of money, party organization and assigned abilities. Cooking, a recurring mechanics of the series, is present: the characters learn and prepare different recipes using a selection of six ingredients, good for them, such as restoring health. Optional voiced characters called Skits (Jp. 2) can be activated when they appear in random locations or after story events. Mini-games in the world include performing as a waiter in a restaurant, and fighting arenas where players fight against random enemies. The game's combat system is a trademark of the Linear Motion Battle System (LMBS) series, which puts up to four game characters on the 2D plain against enemies in real-time combat, similar to the battered them. The version used in Destiny 2 is called Trust and Tactical LMBS. When entering the battle, the camera follows the characters, increasing and increasing depending on the distance from the enemy. During the battle, one character is controlled at any given time, and the rest are controlled by the game's artificial intelligence (AI): AI can be configured in a way that behaves differently, such as adjusting your level of aggression and balancing magical and physical attacks. In addition to real-time commands given in combat, the player can give commands to all the characters, pulling up the battle menu and issuing commands. The character's performance in combat is governed by their current level of Spirit Points (SP): the more SP has character, the higher their defensive and offensive abilities. The character's health is represented by Health Points (HP). Three types of attacks are available and activated gradually depending on the number of hits of the enemy: a standard attack called attacks called Artes, and special high-angle attacks called Mystic Artes.
