All Rights Reserved. North Philadelphia’s Francisville Groups: The Belltones, Thrillers, Royal Demons and Madison Brothers by Charlie Horner with Contributions from Pamela Horner While North Philadelphia produced numerous R&B vocal groups during the 1950’s including the Dreamers, Uni- versals, Dreamlovers, Revels, Buccaneers, Marquees, Blue Notes and Tymes, North Philly was a collection of neighbor- hoods. Each neighborhood had its own churches, schools, recreation centers, clubs and even vocal groups. In the heart of North Philadelphia, there’s an area around 17th Street and Ridge Avenue, stretching from Fair- mount Avenue to Girard Avenue, between Broad Street and Corinthian Avenue, which has long been known as Francis- ville. Only six blocks from center city, Francisville was once the vineyards of William Penn but in more recent times has been a hub of African American culture. At a time before Philadelphia completed the Schuylkill Expressway in 1959, Ridge Avenue was a busy commercial street, lined with stores and small shops. It had been a thoroughfare leading from the northwest suburbs through Philadelphia to the Ben Franklin Bridge to New Jersey. Francistown had an active entertainment scene, most notably Lou Church’s Blue Note, a large 400+ capacity jazz club at 15th & Ridge that during the 1950’s hosted such notable artists as Cannonball Adderly, Art Blakey, Miles Davis and Charles Mingus.

This is the feeling I get as I read Ma- jor Robert Birks’ beautiful unveiling of the poetry of John Gowans. He is an informed, inspired guide whose joy regarding the poet’s work is contagious.

Early on that first Easter Sunday morning, the followers of Jesus were devastated and hidden away, fearful of what lay ahead. All their hopes for a wonderful future seemed shattered because Jesus, their master and teacher from God, in whom they had put their faith and their hope, whom they had loved and followed, was now dead. Early that morning, the disciples Peter & John were together when suddenly Mary Magdalene arrived shouting that someone had moved Jesus’ body, but she didn’t know where. Peter and John immediately ran to the tomb and there they found the folded grave clothes where the Jesus’ body should have been.

  • I Wanna Go Back - David Dunn
I Wanna Go Back - David Dunn His 2015 full-length debut was well received and even spawned a Top 20 radio hit with "Today Is Beautiful." Dunn originally began performing his own songs during his college years. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in engineering and then spent a transformative 13 months in Africa doing mission work. It wasn't until he returned to the States that he started pursuing music full-time. Dunn now calls Nashville home and has had the opportunity to write with some of the Christian community's finest songwriters, many of whom he collaborated with on Yellow Balloons, a synth-soaked pop album boasting heavy beats and honest, heartfelt lyrics. If you see a yellow balloon floating in the sky, say a prayer. Somewhere a family is mourning the loss of a loved one. A yellow balloon has come to symbolize hope effortlessly drifting into the expansive blue abyss above. In need of hope, a year-and-a-half ago, singer/songwriter David Dunn and his family released balloons the color of sunshine into the sky at the memorial service for his 2-year-old niece. It was a blow that hit without warning and a cloud that hangs over the singer's head to this day. For the Texas-native, his niece's passing caused an explosion in the midst of his quiet world. "A 2-year-old is just coming into their personality. She had really started knowing and loving her people, just started talking, and she knew she loved me," he offers.

  • Devotional Music and Healing in Badakhshan, Tajikistan: Preventive and Curative Practices
DEVOTIONAL MUSIC AND HEALING IN BADAKHSHAN, TAJIKISTAN: PREVENTIVE AND CURATIVE PRACTICES DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Benjamin David Koen, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Margarita Mazo, Adviser Professor Daniel Avorgbedor ________________________ Adviser Professor Ron Emoff School of Music Copyright by Benjamin David Koen 2003 ABSTRACT The dissertation examines current practices of music and prayer in healing among the Pamiri people of Badakhshan, Tajikistan. Over the last decade, the field of ethnomusicology has become increasingly concerned with the role of music in healing. Simultaneously, clinical research into music and healing, as well as prayer and healing has dramatically increased. Yet, the link between music and prayer in healing has not been critically examined, either in ethnomusicology or health science. To approach the topic holistically, an interdisciplinary team of researchers was assembled in Badakhshan. Through an integrated methodology of traditional ethnomusicological techniques and physiological experiments, the dissertation investigates the phenomenon of music and prayer in healing in Tajik Badakhshan. By working with master musicians, traditional healers, local religious leaders and physicians, ethnographic and physiological data were collected that form the basis of the dissertation. In the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, the preeminent vocal and instrumental genre of devotional music is known as maddâh. It serves several cultural functions and provides an example of how music and prayer function as a unified whole in the ii context of traditional healing. Maddâh has been little researched in ethnomusicology, and its role in healing has not been explored in the literature.
