Bayer Abstract.—A serial key to the genera of Octocorallia exclusive of the Pennatulacea is presented. New taxa introduced are Olindagorgia, new genus for Pseudopterogorgia marcgravii Bayer; Nicaule, new genus for N. crucifera, new species; and Lytreia, new genus for Thesea plana Deich- mann. Ideogorgia is proposed as a replacement ñame for Dendrogorgia Simpson, 1910, not Duchassaing, 1870, and Helicogorgia for Hicksonella Simpson, December 1910, not Nutting, May 1910. A revised classification is provided. Introduction The key presented here was an essential outgrowth of work on a general revisión of the octocoral fauna of the western part of the Atlantic Ocean. The far-reaching zoogeographical affinities of this fauna made it impossible in the course of this study to ignore genera from any part of the world, and it soon became clear that many of them require redefinition according to modern taxonomic standards. Therefore, the type-species of as many genera as possible have been examined, often on the basis of original type material, and a fully illustrated generic revisión is in course of preparation as an essential first stage in the redescription of western Atlantic species. The key prepared to accompany this generic review has now reached a stage that would benefit from a broader and more objective testing under practical conditions than is possible in one laboratory. For this reason, and in order to make the results of this long-term study available, even in provisional form, not only to specialists but also to the growing number of ecologists, biochemists, and physiologists interested in octocorals, the key is now pre- sented in condensed form with minimal illustration. -

Despite the abundance and ecological importance of octocorals in Alaskan waters, most of the species in this assemblage remain unidentified and/or undescribed. One of the largest and most abundant species from the Aleutian Islands found at depths ranging between 125 and 512 m is a new and very unusual gorgonian coral. It has stout upright colonies that are laterally branched, with thick, more or less clavate terminal branches. Its major distinguishing characteristic is its possession of tiny sclerites with stubby double heads, which occur in the outermost coenenchyme. Another significant character is its oval capstans with elaborate ornamentation. The gorgonian is described as Alaskagorgia aleutiana new genus and species (Cnidaria: Octocorallia: Holaxonia: Plexauridae). It is described and assigned to Plexauridae because of the affinity of DNA sequences (1337 bp mtDNA: ND2 and MSH1) of A. -

Morphological aspects together with molecular identification are tools that have been recently applied to solve systematic questions in octocorals due to their intricate morphology. For this group, as for many others, the use of a molecular marker that solves systematic problems at different taxonomic levels would be extremely useful for species identification and classification. Here we use the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) predicted RNA secondary structure for reconstructing phylogenetic hypotheses at different taxonomic levels. These structures are very important for the ribosome assembly since they are involved in mRNA folding and processing. For this reason, mutations that do not enable the proper folding of the sequence have to be compensated or suppressed. Hence, ITS2 are said to evolve in concert, which leads to a homogenization of all the copies of this gene throughout the genome. ITS2 secondary structures are useful for higher taxonomy systematics because a common core of the structures has being found. -

The study described here includes samples collected during the ‘Macrofauna’ explorations carried out by the Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras-INVEMAR between 1998 and 2002 from shallow (20 m) to deep (500 m) waters. A total of 280 museum containers were examined. Samples were collected at 32 stations distributed along the continental shelf and upper slope of Colombian Caribbean. A total of 44 species have been recognized, 21 of them identified to species level and 23 to genus level; the species are included in 22 genera and nine families (Plexauridae, Gorgoniidae, Ellisellidae, Primnoidae, Anthothelidae, Clavulariidae, Keroeididae, Acanthogorgiidae, Chrysogorgiidae).
