E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Among the taxa of the Milla complex (Themidaceae), a monocot group of perennial petaloid geophytes, there are two genera with controversial taxonomic status: Behria and Bessera. Tree-based and character-based analyses were conducted on 14 populations to determine if they should be considered different taxa. In addition, ecological separation was taken into account. As outgroups representative taxa of Dandya, Jaimehintonia, Milla and Petronymphe, i.e. the rest of the genera in the Milla clade, were used. Behria is a monotypic genus restricted to Baja California and Bessera includes two species from the Pacifi c slopes of Mexico and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The chloroplast intergenic spacer psbK-psbI was sequenced and 37 morphological characters were coded. Tree-based analyses retrieved all populations of Behria and all populations of Bessera as monophyletic groups, both forming part of a more inclusive clade. Character-based analysis detected six diagnostic characters, all of which were fl oral. The conclusion of recognizing Behria and Bessera as independent genera was based on these results and also on their different distri- butional ranges. Resumen: Entre los taxones del complejo Milla (Themidaceae), un grupo de monocotiledóneas petaloides geófi tas, existen dos géneros con estatus taxonómico incierto: Behria y Bessera. Con el objetivo de determinar si estos géneros pueden considerarse independientes, se realizaron análisis fi logenéticos y de atributos diagnósticos con base en atributos morfológicos y moleculares de 14 poblaciones. Adicionalmente se consideraron individuos representativos del resto de los géneros del complejo, tales como Dandya, Jaimehintonia, Milla y Petronymphe. Behria es un género monotípico restringido al sur de la Península de Baja California. Bessera comprende dos especies de la vertiente pacífi ca de México y la Faja Volcánica Transmexicana. Se secuenció el espaciador intergénico psbK-psbI del cloroplasto y se codifi caron 37 atributos morfológicos. Los análisis fi logenéticos identifi caron a las pobla- ciones de Behria y Bessera como grupos monofi léticos independientes, formando parte de un clado más inclusivo. Los resultados del análisis de atributos diagnósticos reconocieron seis atributos fl orales. Por lo tanto se concluye que estos taxones pueden ser identifi cados claramente por su morfología fl oral, además tienen diferentes patrones de distribución y se deben considerar como géneros independientes. There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses.     LEARNING ECOLOGY: ETHNOBOTANY IN THE SIERRA TARAHUMARA, MEXICO by FELICE SEA WYNDHAM (Under the Direction of Brent Berlin) ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates social-environmental factors contributing to differential ethnobotanical expertise among children in Rarámuri (Tarahumara) communities in Rejogochi, Chihuahua, Mexico. This research contributes to understanding processes of transmission and acquisition of environmental knowledge and to the development of an ecological, interactionist model of indigenous education. The first section describes an ethnography of Rarámuri childhood, focusing on children’s life stages, work, play, and family environments. Some aspects of Rarámuri epistemologies of learning are explored. Among these is the importance of relationship maintenance through ritual and thinking/behaving well. Structured interviews with Rarámuri children between the ages of 5 and 18 showed consensus as to the primary importance of mothers, fathers, aunts and uncles as teachers of plant knowledge. Secondarily, siblings, cousins and playmates were identified as teachers. The second section presents a quantitative study of children’s knowledge of a set of 40 culturally significant local plants in three use-categories: medicinal, edible, and other material utility. The social-environmental factors significant in predicting levels of plant knowledge among children were, most notably, which primary school (of two local choices) children attended and, to a lesser extent, age of the child completing the interview. Plant-name and plant-use interviews suggest that many children today are not acquiring their parents’ full repertoire of plant knowledge, but rather, exhibit knowledge of a restricted set of plants that are most salient culturally and ecologically. The discussion of results highlights the importance of understanding how knowledge distribution patterns correspond to social relationships, social roles, and individual and family interest and experience.

Although relatively small, Muntele Mic contains most of typical mountain and high-mountain habitats. The field research regarding the orchid’s family in the Muntele Mic area, have started in the summer of 2009. Owing to easy access (asphalt road that goes to the tourist center of Muntele Mic), although it is classified as part of the European Natura 2000 network (ROSCI0126 Munţii Ţarcu), the area is influenced by negative anthropogenic factors. Although considered to be a very anthropized area, the field research concluded that there are 10 species of orchids growing in this location, of which three: Gymnadenia frivaldii Hampe ex Griseb., Dactylorhiza fuchsii (Druce) Soó and Dactylorhiza saccifera (Brongn.) Soó), were not mentioned in the literature data. The aims of this study were to find morphological characters that allow to distinguish groups among M. biflora and to analyse the morphological variation, with the purpose of generating an identification key. Methods – A multivariate analysis was based 24 quantitative characters of nine species of the genus Milla. Nine morphometric characters that had the highest loadings in the multivariate analysis plus 18 qualitative characters were used to run a cluster analysis. Key results – Discriminant analysis showed that the quantitative characters selected by the canonical discriminant analysis do not allow distinguishing all the species studied. Only the combination of qualitative and quantitative characters favours the separation of the species through the cluster analysis. Cluster analysis allowed the recognition of 35 groups with a dissimilarity value > 0.80. Twenty-six morphotypes differ from the other Milla species, previously recognized, in at least one character.

Other taxa have been added to the initial list of plants, so that, the total number of taxa registered by the authors in Rarău Massif amount to 1443 taxa (1133 species and 310 subspecies, varieties and forms). There was signaled out the alien taxa on the surveyed area (18 species) and those dubious presence of some taxa for the same area (17 species). Also, there were listed all the vascular plants, protected by various laws or regulations, both internal or international, existing in Rarău (i.e. 189 taxa). Finally, there has been assessed the degree of wild flora conservation, using several indicators introduced in literature by Nowak, as they are: conservation indicator (C), threat conservation indicator) (CK), sozophytisation indicator (W), and conservation effectiveness indicator (E). Wats., M. coronata Greene, and M. transmontana Greene. To this list Hoover ( 1955 ) added M. clevelanclii ( S. Wats.) Hoover, originally described by Watson and assigned by him to the genus Bloomeria. Except for M. maritima which is widely distributed in western central and southern California, the others are either rare or seldom collected. In his monograph, Ingram reported examining only three specimens of M. coro­ nata. Following the favorable winter of 1972-73, when more than the normal amount of precipitation was received on the desert, both M. coronata and M. transmontana were collected in areas considerably removed from known earlier collections. Muilla coronata was discovered in the eastern Mojave D esert of San Bernardino Co., one mile north on the road to Hard Cash Mine in Caruthers Canyon, 13 air miles east of Cima at an elevation of about 5,700 ft in pinyon-juniper woodland where it was growing on granite ( Thorne 43338).

There is concern because several factors are impeding its conservation. In this paper, areas of endemism for the flowering plants of Mexico are identified to prioritize regions for conservation. To categorize zones for preservation, the approach followed takes biodiversity, weighted endemism and evolutionary history into account. Lineages of angiosperms, families, genera, and formal or informal groups within genera previously retrieved as monophyletic are selected to represent evolutionary history in equivalent spatial units. A database with 9416 entries based on specimens of species belonging to 259 monophyletic groups of angiosperms from Mexico was compiled, and their presence-absence recorded for every unit area. Species richness and weighted endemism index was calculated for each of these units. The results indicate that the majority of the regions with
