A recent, high profile production, with two actors (Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as François Pienaar, the cap- tain of the South African rugby team) nominated for Academy Awards, and a major contemporary American director in Eastwood, it attests both to the contemporary prestige of the proliferating sports film, and to the interna- tionalising of the genre. Films such as Cry Freedom (Richard Attenborough, 1987), Cry the Beloved Country (Darrell Roodt, 1995), The Power of One (John G. Avildsen, 1992), A Dry White Season (Euzhan Palcy, 1989), and Goodbye Bafana (Billie August, 2007), demonstrate the contemporary cinema’s fascination with the South African apartheid regime and its fall, and with the figure of Nelson Mandela, widely seen as one of the political heroes of our time. Another film about this era might have been expected, but hardly a Hollywood production based on the 1995 Rugby World Cup, rugby being a lower tier sport in the US (the largely forgotten progenitor of American football), and Hollywood faithfully reflecting American parochial- ism as regards other nations’ sports. I helped out during the tournament at the Practice Tee, where we had various tasks to complete: picking up balls from the range, then sorting and bagging them so players could use them to practice, setting out players’ name plates, and responding to different player and caddy questions. Because I and all the other volunteers moved around the practice facility so much, we were able to see the players up close. Some, like Phil Mickelson, brought along a coach to the practice tee. Many players had a variety of practice aids – guides, trays and tees, for example - designed to give them immediate feedback on their performance. One even held a balloon between his forearms while he hit balls to prevent his arms from separating during his swing. It reminded me a little of that football helmet device Rene Russo gave Kevin Costner in the movie, “Tin Cup.” Ok, not really but if a tool or aid works, golfers seem willing to endure it! The most high-tech gadget used by over half the players is something called TrackMan, which has an estimated retail price of $25,000. About the size of a laptop, the device, when positioned behind the golfer, can record the arc, speed distance and loads more data on every swing.

    Why golf movies matter, and why Tommy’s Honour might be the best one Perspective ever made In the winter of 1895, Louis and Auguste Lumière set up their new movie machine, a cinematograph of their own design, and made history. The brothers’ compilation of short scenes from everyday French life, shown to a paying audience in a Parisian café three days after Christmas, marked the debut of commercial cinema, as it was the first film ever shown for money. In Scotland some months earlier, over two nights at the St Andrews Town Hall, another dramatic debut of sorts took place when Old Tom Morris, then 74 and still Keeper of the Green at golf’s ancestral home, appeared in his first, and likely his only, theater production. Standing on stage in front of a backdrop painted to resemble a links course, Morris played himself in a three-scene show that concluded with him missing a short putt to lose a match to a man in a scarlet jacket, presumably like those of the St Andrews membership. Recounted in 1907’s The Life of Tom Morris, it was an ignoble role for the man who, with his son Tommy, had done so much for golf and who had one of the most compelling personal stories ever told—if not seen, exactly. Not until now, that is. Tommy’s Honour is a new film about the Toms Morris, and if you read no further know that this magazine considers it a “must watch” for any fan of the game. Based on the 2007 book by Kevin Cook, Tommy’s Honor: The Story of Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris (Cook also wrote the screenplay with wife Pamela Marin), the movie was shot last year and sees its international release this spring.
