The Smith and Laycoe Weight Room is a varsity athlete exclusive, state-of-the-art, 4,000 sq ft. training facility featuring 18 Olympic lifting platforms and anti-gravity treadmill. The 1,800 sq ft. UBC Football Academic Centre opened in 2015 and sits adjacent to Thunderbird Stadium. The Centre enables current and future varsity football athletes to excel both on and off the field. Academic and financial supports The UBC Thunderbirds program employs full-time staff to aid student-athletes in their academic pursuits. An emphasis is placed on the transition of first-year 4 students, for whom one-on-one tutoring and guaranteed housing is offered. Vanier Cups Priority course registration is made available for student-athletes in most faculties. Financial support is provided in the form of athletic scholarships and alumni- 5 supported awards for leadership and academics, as well as a work-study program.
