    Kantor Center Position Papers Editor: Mikael Shainkman January 2018 ANTISEMITISM IN THE RADICAL LEFT AND THE BRITISH LABOUR PARTY Dave Rich* Executive Summary Antisemitism has become a national political issue and a headline story in Britain for the first time in decades because of ongoing problems in the Labour Party. Labour used to enjoy widespread Jewish support but increasing left wing hostility towards Israel and Zionism, and a failure to understand and properly oppose contemporary antisemitism, has placed increasing distance between the party and the UK Jewish community. This has emerged under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, a product of the radical 1960s New Left that sees Israel as an apartheid state created by colonialism, but it has been building on the fringes of the left for decades. Since Corbyn became party leader, numerous examples of antisemitic remarks made by Labour members, activists and elected officials have come to light. These remarks range from opposition to Israel’s existence or claims that Zionism collaborated with Nazism, to conspiracy theories about the Rothschilds or ISIS. The party has tried to tackle the problem of antisemitism through procedural means and generic declarations opposing antisemitism, but it appears incapable of addressing the political culture that produces this antisemitism: possibly because this radical political culture, borne of anti-war protests and allied to Islamist movements, is precisely where Jeremy Corbyn and his closest associates find their political home. A Crisis of Antisemitism Since early 2016, antisemitism has become a national political issue in Britain for the first time in decades. This hasn’t come about because of a surge in support for the far right, or jihadist terrorism against Jews.

This sale represents a singular opportunity to transform bus operations in our area and we believe it is in the best interests of both FirstGroup and our constituents for First Bus West Yorkshire to be taken into ownership by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA). To this end, we believe that WYCA should have the first option to purchase this division. In West Yorkshire, the bus as a mode of travel is particularly relied upon by many of our constituents to get to work, appointments and to partake in leisure activities. We have a long-shared aim of increasing the usage of buses locally as a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to the private car. We believe that interest is best served by allowing for passengers to have a stake in their own service through the local combined authority. Lord Levy told BBC Newsnight he believed anti-Semitism existed across the political divide, but it seemed "more prominent" within Labour. It follows the party's decision to suspend MP Naz Shah from the party over comments about Israel on social media, pending an investigation. Ms Shah has made a "profound apology" in the Commons for her remarks. The MP for Bradford West has been widely criticised for Facebook posts she made before she became an MP, in which she suggested, among other things, that Israel should be moved to the United States. 'Hard left' Lord Levy, who was Tony Blair's envoy and chief fundraiser, told the BBC her comments displayed "ignorance", and he was left "scratching his head with despair as to how people like this can enter our parliament with such a lack of knowledge, discretion and sensitivity". His comments were echoed by cross-bench peer Baroness Neuberger, who claimed Labour's problem of anti-Semitism was "attached to Jeremy Corbyn becoming leader", and added that it was "an issue with the hard left". Labour has faced claims of growing anti-Semitism in its ranks. Earlier this year a Labour Luton councillor was suspended from the party after claiming Hitler was the "greatest man in history". Jeremy Corbyn has insisted anti-Semitism will not be tolerated but some of his MPs say the party leadership is not doing enough to stamp it out.

Greenwood, Ian Roberts and Kalina Bontcheva The University of Sheffield, UK ARTICLE HISTORY Compiled October 25, 2019 ABSTRACT Against a backdrop of tensions related to EU membership, we find levels of online abuse toward UK MPs reach a new high. Race and religion have become pressing topics globally, and in the UK this interacts with \Brexit" and the rise of social media to create a complex social climate in which much can be learned about evolving attitudes. In 8 million tweets by and to UK MPs in the first half of 2019, religious intolerance scandals in the UK's two main political parties attracted significant attention. Furthermore, high profile ethnic minority MPs started conversations on Twitter about race and religion, the responses to which provide a valuable source of insight. We found a significant presence for disturbing racial and religious abuse. We also explore metrics relating to abuse patterns, which may affect its impact. We find \burstiness" of abuse doesn't depend on race or gender, but individual factors may lead to politicians having very different experiences online.     PAKISTAN - BILATERAL VISIT AND NEW MEMBERS’ INDUCTION PROGRAMME REPORT SUMMARY 18-22 FEBRUARY 2019 PROGRAMME OVERVIEW A CPA UK delegation led by Naz Shah MP visited Pakistan from 18-22 February 2019. The delegation, which also included Faisal Rashid MP, Baroness Warsi, Lord Rogan, and two CPA UK staff, participated in a series of diplomatic meetings in Islamabad and Lahore, to gain a better understanding of the changing political and parliamentary landscape of the country, following the general elections in July 2018. A two-day induction programme for newly-elected Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) was also organised at the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services (PIPS) in Islamabad from 20-21 February. IMPACT & OUTCOMES As part of the diplomatic visit, the delegation met with Prime Minister Imran Khan who spoke about the paradigm shift taking place in Pakistan and the willingness of the new government to challenge Impact the status quo. Running head: The effect of territorial stigmatisation on ontological security Abstract We investigate the effect of territorial stigmatisation on ontological security through a qualitative case-study of Bradford politics during the 2015 General Election. Territorial stigmatisation and ontological security are important constructs in political geography but there is relatively little research on how territorial stigmatisation effects ontological security in everyday lived experience – in this case the lived experience of political contests. We conducted thirty in-depth interviews, generated three themes and present and analyse these three themes in the form of three ‘created dialogues’ as outlined by Sullivan (2012), with a smaller sample of ten out of thirty of our participants.
