A Coordenadoria de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), pela bolsa de estudo concedida; Ao PROPEC, UFOP e Fundação Gorceix, pelo apoio institucional. iii RESUMO Desastres naturais e guerras civis afetam diretamente milhões de pessoas anualmente em todo o mundo, deslocando-as para campos de refugiados organizados conforme as necessidades daquela população. Observa-se, portanto, no que tange a abrigos emergenciais, as costumeiras tipologias utilizadas nessas situações, normalmente tendas acomodadas ao nível do chão, que poderão apresentar, conforme o tempo de utilização, inconvenientes nos aspectos estruturais e térmicos. Neste trabalho ampliam-se os conhecimentos acerca da arquitetura móvel no âmbito das habitações emergenciais e propõe-se um modelo arquitetônico evidenciando os aspectos culturais e históricos dessa antiga e, ao mesmo tempo, nova forma de elaborar a arquitetura. Dentro desse universo, foi proposta uma investigação sobre os tópicos gerais que permeiam a arquitetura móvel de uso emergencial, observando-se o desenvolvimento histórico do homem e, por conseguinte, da arquitetura, questões referentes a temporalidade da habitação e as particularidades acerca da construção, apresentando-se os materiais para a composição adequada ao modelo proposto, e as estratégias necessárias ao conforto térmico. Busca-se, da mesma forma, apresentar características sobre a racionalização do processo construtivo, normalização e modulação que ampliam as qualidades para a confecção em ambiente industrial (pré-fabricação) do elemento proposto, diminuindo custos com mão-de-obra, matéria-prima, e do próprio objeto. Apresenta-se ainda uma análise do desempenho estrutural e térmico do modelo arquitetônico proposto, visando sua aplicação imediata e prioritária em situações de emergência, podendo oferecer conforto térmico e resistência estrutural adequados a qualquer situação. A análise estrutural e térmica é realizada via simulação numérica utilizando os softwares SAP2000, versão 16.1, e Energyplus, versão 8.1, respectivamente. Os resultados obtidos pela análise estrutural demonstraram que os perfis de alumínio foram os mais adequados, pois além de oferecer estabilidade estrutural proporcionam um modelo mais leve comparado ao analisado em perfis de aço leve. Em relação ao desempenho térmico, o modelo construído com tecido impermeável e resistente não atende ao critério mínimo da norma de desempenho e desse modo outras estratégias de condicionamento térmico devem ser pensadas em função da região onde será implantado. Palavras-chave: abrigos temporários e emergenciais, pré-fabricação, desempenho estrutural e térmico, perfis metálicos leves. iv ABSTRACT Natural disasters and civil wars directly affect millions of people annually worldwide, moving them to refugee camps organized according to the needs of that population. It is observed therefore, regarding the emergency shelters, that the usual types used in these situations, usually tents, stay at ground level, which may present along the time of use, drawbacks in structural and thermal aspects. This thesis extends the knowledge about the mobile architecture of the emergency housing and presents an architectural model showing the cultural and historical aspects of this ancient, and at the same time, a new way to develop architecture. Within this universe, an investigation was proposed on the general topics that permeate the mobile architecture of emergency use, observing the historical development of man and therefore of architecture itself, issues of temporality of housing and the particularities about the construction, and presenting the materials to the composition appropriate to the proposed model, and the strategies needed to attain thermal comfort. We seek also to present peculiarities on the streamlining of the construction process, standardization and modulation that expand the qualities for the making of the proposed element in an industrial environment (prefabrication), reducing costs with labor, raw materials, and of the object itself. It is presented also an analysis of the structural and thermal performance of the proposed architectural model, aiming at its immediate and prioritized application in emergency situations, providing thermal comfort and structural strength appropriate to any situation. The structural and thermal analysis is performed by numerical simulation using the software SAP2000, version 16.1, and Energyplus, version 8.1, respectively. The results obtained by the structural analysis showed that the aluminum profiles were the most suitable, because besides providing structural stability they provide a lighter model when compared to the model made of steel profile. Regarding the thermal performance, the model built with waterproof and resistant fabric does not comply with the minimum criteria of thermal performance standard, thus, other strategies for thermal conditioning should be considered, according to the region where it will be applied. To learn more about the heritage value of long-resident peoples’ architecture, and to discover how their architecture can selectively inform adaptable architecture of the future. we engaged Inuit and First Nations knowledge-holders and young people in re-creating tradition-based shelters and housing. During the reconstructions, children and Elders alike expressed their enthusiasm and pride in the inventiveness and usefulness of their ancestral architectural wisdom. Several of the structures created during this research are still standing years later and continue to serve as emergency shelters for food harvesters. During extreme weather, the shelters contribute to a potentially widespread network of food harvester dwellings that would facilitate revitalization of traditional foodways. The re-creations indicate that building materials, forms, assembly technologies, and other considerations from the architecture of Indigenous peoples provide a valuable heritage resource for architects of the future. In this study, field experiments were conducted to understand the patterns of temperature changes of the yurt’s indoor thermal environment. The study found that the felt’s low thermal inertia affected the indoor temperature stability, resulting in a large difference between day and night temperatures inside the yurt. The felts adjusted the indoor humidity in the case of large outdoor humidity fluctuations, but when the outdoor humidity was very low, the indoor air was drier. Indoor temperatures were generally lower in the centre and higher in the surrounding peripheral areas, and the main influencing factors included felt seams, gaps between the door and Khana, the ground, and solar radiation. The main factor influencing the temperature of the felt wall’s inner surface was solar radiation. The effects on temperature and humidity when opening the component felt pieces were obvious: humidity adjustment was best with the top felt piece opened; indoor temperature adjustment was best with the gaps between the floor and felt wall pieces closed; and the door curtain was most effective for insulation when the outdoor temperature was low.

    Oregon Nordic Club PORTLAND CHAPTER JANUARY 2013 First Tracks The storms were energetic in December filling our winter trails with copious amounts of our treasured white stuff. Finally we were able to step into our skis and glide through the foot or more that covered the trails. But deep snows call for lots of energy from skiers making the first tracks through the bountiful fluffy powder. It is a privilege as well as a tough job to take the lead making those first tracks. And having others along to share in the task of breaking trail is an advantage of skiing with a group. If set with care a good set of track will hold up for the return trip and days to come if there are sunny skies. Hopefully others (snowshoers and hikers) using the trails will make their own tracks and preserve our Bob Breivogel laboriously created ski tracks and we will be rewarded with an enjoyable return trip. Klindt Vielbig offered advice on setting a track in the Introduction in his Cross-Country Ski Routes Oregon second edition, our bible of cross-country skiing. He recommends making the track as straight at possible on the trail and the tracks about six inches apart. He suggests that you look behind yourself to see that your effort follows these principles. I have found that it is wise to make the first tracks wide because when the skiers come behind you in deep snow the track naturally narrows down. When set too narrow the tracks naturally become even closer together making it difficult to ski.

In this lecture we will learn how to make buildings that respond to their climate ‐‐ use less energy ‐‐ and that we might actually be able to tell where they come from. “McDonald’s” type architecture tends to distribute the same building “type” around the globe, with little recognition of the influences of climate. Before the invention of mechanical heating and cooling in the late 1800s, this would not have been possible. Why do we build buildings??? Initially, it was for shelter from the outside weather, and thus, survival. THEN, people desired a certain minimum level of COMFORT, but would modify clothing or expectations as a function of the weather. NOW, people people expect to be held at a constant level of COMFORT, in spite of the weather or location (in the world). The Effects of Climate on People Major elements of climatic environment which affect human comfort are: ‐Air temperature ‐Radiation ‐Air movement (Wind Speed) ‐Humidity “Thermal Comfort –that condition of mind which expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment.” ASHRAE Standard 55‐66 Bodily Heat Transfer Heat Gains: •Metabolism (conversion of food to activity and heat) •Absorption of Radiant Energy •Heat Conduction Toward Body Heat Loss Through: •Evaporation •Conduction •Convection (Wind Chill Factor) •Radiation Shelter and Environment •Shelter is the main instrument for fulfilling the requirements of comfort. It modifies the natural environment to approach optimum conditions of livability.
