Introduction Throughout this paper the letters R and R will denote the set of real numbers and the set of nonnegative real numbers, respectively. The book of Aliprantis and Border 1 provides a good basic reference for functional analysis in our context. Let X be a real vector space. A function p : X → R is said to be an asymmetric norm on X 2, 3 if for all x, y ∈ X,andr ∈ R , i pxp−x0 if and only if x 0; ii prxrpx; iii px y ≤ pxpy. The pair X, p is called an asymmetric normed space. Asymmetric norms are also called quasinorms in 4–6, and nonsymmetric norms in 7. -

Call a space X weakly splittable if, for each f X 2 R , there exists a σ-compact F Cp(X) such that f F (the bar denotes the closure in RX⊂). A weakly splittable com-2 pact space is called weakly Eberlein compact. We prove that weakly Eberlein compact spaces have almost the same prop- erties as Eberlein compact spaces. We show that any weakly Eberlein compact space of cardinality 6 c is Eberlein com- pact. We prove that a compact space X is weakly Eberlein compact if and only if X is splittable over the class of Eber- lein compact spaces and that every countably compact weakly splittable space has the Preiss{Simon property. 0. Introduction The first one to study weakly compact subspaces of Banach spaces was Eberlein [Eb]. His results showed that these compact spaces are very important and have numerous applications in many areas of mathematics. That is why they were called Eberlein com- pact spaces. In fact, a compact space X is Eberlein compact if and only if Cp(X) has a σ-compact dense subspace and it is a non-trivial theorem that these two definitions are equivalent. It turns out that a linear operator is continuous on a normed linear space as soon as it is continuous at the origin or for that matter, at any point of the domain of its definition. Theorem 1.1. In this paper we present a brief review of some important results on weak compactness in the space of vector valued measures. We also review some recent results of the author on weak compactness of any set of operator valued measures. These results are then applied to optimal structural feedback control for deterministic systems on infinite dimensional spaces. The goal is to investigate and explain different proofs of the Eberlein-Šmulian theorem. First we introduce the general theory of weak and weak* topology defined on a normed space X. Next we present the definition of a basis and a Schauder basis of a given Banach space. We give some examples and prove the main theorems which are needed to enjoy the proof of the Eberlein-Šmulian theorem given by Pelchynski in 1964. -

Grothendieck Spaces with the Dunford–Pettis Property
GROTHENDIECK SPACES WITH THE DUNFORD–PETTIS PROPERTY ANGELA A. ALBANESE*, JOSÉ BONET+ AND WERNER J. RICKER Abstract. Banach spaces which are Grothendieck spaces with the Dunford– Pettis property (briefly, GDP) are classical. A systematic treatment of GDP– Fréchet spaces occurs in [12]. This investigation is continued here for locally convex Hausdorff spaces. The product and (most) inductive limits of GDP– space are again GDP–spaces. Also, every complete injective space is a GDP– space. For p ∈ {0} ∪ [1, ∞) it is shown that the classical co–echelon spaces kp(V ) and Kp(V ) are GDP–spaces if and only if they are Montel. On the other hand, K∞(V ) is always a GDP–space and k∞(V ) is a GDP–space whenever its (Fréchet) predual, i.e., the Köthe echelon space λ1(A), is distinguished. 1. Introduction. Grothendieck spaces with the Dunford–Pettis property (briefly, GDP) play a prominent role in the theory of Banach spaces and vector measures; see Ch.VI of [17], especially the Notes and Remarks, and [18]. Known examples include L∞, ∞ ∞ H (D), injective Banach spaces (e.g. ` ) and certain C(K) spaces. D. Dean showed in [14] that a GDP–space does not admit any Schauder decomposition; see also [26, Corollary 8]. This has serious consequences for spectral measures in such spaces, [31]. For non–normable spaces the situation changes dramatically. Every Fréchet Montel space X is a GDP–space, [12, Remark 2.2]. Other than Montel spaces, the only known non–normable Fréchet space which is a GDP–space is the Köthe echelon space λ∞(A), for an arbitrary Köthe matrix A, [12, Proposition 3.1]. -

It is shown that for any infinite compact Hausdorff space T ,the Bishop-Phelps set in C(T )∗ is of the first Baire category when C(T )hasthe supremum norm. For a Banach space X with closed unit ball B(X), the Bishop-Phelps set is the set of all functionals in the dual X∗ which attain their supremum on B(X); that is, the set µ X∗:thereexistsx B(X) with µ(x)= µ .Itiswellknownthat { ∈ ∈ k k} the Bishop-Phelps set is always dense in the dual X∗. It is more difficult, however, to decide whether the Bishop-Phelps set is residual as this would require a concrete characterisation of those linear functionals in X∗ which attain their supremum on B(X). In general it is difficult to characterise such functionals, however it is possible when X = C(T ), for some compact T , with the supremum norm. The aim of this note is to show that in this case the Bishop-Phelps set is a first Baire category subset of C(T )∗. A problem of considerable interest in differentiability theory is the following. If the Bishop-Phelps set is a residual subset of the dual X ∗, is the dual norm necessarily densely Fr´echet differentiable? It is known, for example, that this is the case if the dual X∗ is weak Asplund, [1, Corollary 1.6(i)], or if X has an equivalent weakly mid-point locally uniformly rotund norm and the weak topology on X is σ-fragmented by the norm, [2, Theo- rems 3.3 and 4.4]. -

Pryde Abstract A Banach space (X, || • ||) is said to be a dual differentiation space if every continuous convex function defined on a non-empty open convex subset A of X* that possesses weak* continuous subgradients at the points of a residual subset of A is Frechet differentiable on a dense subset of A. In this paper we show that if we assume the continuum hypothesis then there exists a dual differentiation space that does not admit an equivalent locally uniformly rotund norm. 2000 Mathematics subject classification: primary 46B20; secondary 58C20. Introduction Given a Banach space (X, || • ||) the Bishop-Phelps set (or BP-set for short) is the set {x* € X* : ||**|| =**(*) for some x e Bx], where Bx denotes the closed unit ball in (X, || • ||). The Bishop-Phelps theorem, [1] says that the BP-set is always dense in X*. In this paper we are interested in the case when the BP-set is residual (that is, contains a dense Gs subset) in X*. Certainly, it is known that if the dual norm is Frechet differentiable on a dense subset of X* then the BP-set is residual in X* (see the discussion in [13]). However, the converse question (that is, if the BP-set is residual in X* must the dual norm necessarily be Frechet differentiable on a dense subset of X*?) remains open. -

Version of 4.9.09 Chapter 35 Riesz spaces The next three chapters are devoted to an abstract description of the ‘function spaces’ described in Chapter 24, this time concentrating on their internal structure and relationships with their associated measure algebras. I find that any convincing account of these must involve a substantial amount of general theory concerning partially ordered linear spaces, and in particular various types of Riesz space or vector lattice. I therefore provide an introduction to this theory, a kind of appendix built into the middle of the volume. The relation of this chapter to the next two is very like the relation of Chapter 31 to Chapter 32. As with Chapter 31, it is not really meant to be read for its own sake; those with a particular interest in Riesz spaces might be better served by Luxemburg & Zaanen 71, Schaefer 74, Zaanen 83 or my own book Fremlin 74a. I begin with three sections in an easy gradation towards the particular class of spaces which we need to understand: partially ordered linear spaces (§351), general Riesz spaces (§352) and Archimedean Riesz spaces (§353); the last includes notes on Dedekind (σ-)complete spaces. These sections cover the fragments of the algebraic theory of Riesz spaces which I will use. In the second half of the chapter, I deal with normed Riesz spaces (in particular, L- and M-spaces)(§354), spaces of linear operators (§355) and dual Riesz spaces (§356).
