BOOK ATTIC Book bindery and restoration

– she had a large brass nipping press (which helps to clamp the book when restoring it), numerous brushes, scalpels and a tiny iron that looks like a soldering iron and is used to iron dog ears, i.e. turn over pages in a book. Helmut Fricker, the father of my friend and fellow AWA member Susie Edrington, happened to be visiting Hong Kong when I interviewed Jennifer, so he came along too. Helmut has been restoring books for 66 years so Jennifer and Helmut had a passionate discussion about the art of book restoration. As a child, Jennifer loved reading and was a real bookworm. She spent a lot of time reading children’s literature translated into Chinese. As an adult, she found 19th century English versions of these books in Sunday markets in Europe, however they were usually in poor condition, thus igniting Jennifer’s love of book restoration. She studied under several teachers in England, including Flora Ginn and Alan Finch. Jennifer is envious of Alan’s bindery because it is located in a bungalow – so much space! Unfortunately, in Hong Kong space is at a premium but Jennifer has maximized the space in her home bindery. When Jennifer travels abroad she looks up bookbinderies and attends master classes to learn new techniques. Over the centuries, different materials have been used in books. In the 1800s, they used wood to make paper (you can smell it in the books), their edges becoming yellow and fragile. Yes, there is much more to Wanchai than bars and shopping. On this mostly gentle walking tour, Jason Wordie will give us the inside scoop on the history of this “small bay” (“wan chai”) that began in pre-British times as a small Chinese settlement. We will learn how the development of modern Wanchai began in the 1840’s around what is now Spring Garden Lane, how the tramway opened in 1904 along the waterfront (now Johnston and Hennessey Roads), and how the enduring reputation of Wanchai as a nightlife zone developed in the post-war era. You will be surrounded by history in things that you have probably walked by many times but didn’t recognize or even notice. Bring your camera, a water bottle and wear comfortable walking shoes for this truly enjoyable morning. Lunch to follow at shared expense.
