14 March, 2020: AIDA CANCELS ALL CRUISES UNTIL APRIL 3RD – CREW ARE WELCOME STAY ON BOARD The German Cruise line AIDA Cruises has made a very difficult decision announcing temporarily pause of its global cruise operations until early April 2020. The decision was taken as a response to the global spread of COVID-19 virus, recently calling for extraordinary measures and for the resolute contribution of all stakeholders to stop the outbreak. In a letter sent to the crew members, Aida announced that the shipboard employees will be given options to stay on the ships during this period, or return home, therefore the crew are given freedom to decide what is best for them and their families. Regardless of their decision, there will be no terminations of crew contracts. That means nobody has to leave the ship. The crew who plan to disembark and return home, even if their contracts are longer, they can do so as soon as the company arranges for flight tickets. In both cases, AIDA will cover the flight costs. For the crew at home waiting to sign-on the dates are postponed for now. Read more… http://crew-center.com/aida-cancels-all-cruises-until-april-3rd-crew-are-welcome-stay-board

13 March, 2020: ALL CLIA OCEAN-GOING LINES SUSPEND CRUISES FROM/TO US PORTS In an extraordinary action, Cruise Lines International Association's ocean-going lines are voluntarily suspending sailings from and to US ports. This will be for 30 days as public health officials and the US government continue to address COVID-19. This capped a day of rapid-fire developments for the cruise industry and the US, with President Trump declaring a national emergency to free up $50bn in federal funds to fight the virus. Late Friday lawmakers were honing in on a relief package which could possibly include some form of cruise industry support. In the afternoon, before CLIA's blanket announce- ment, Vice President Mike Pence noted several cruise lines were 'pausing,' a move he said was praised by the Department of Homeland Security. At that point, 17 cruise brands, including some river lines, had declared 'pauses.' CLIA's announcement raised that even higher and encompasses further big names like Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America Line. 12 March, 2020: CARIBBEAN UPDATE Martinique tourism officials also reported that they too were awaiting test results on passengers aboard the Costa Magic cruise ship. Martinique has three of the 11 confirmed cases in the French overseas territories, which includes five cases in French Guiana on the South American mainland. In a press release, tourism officials said the ship will remain three miles off shore from the bay of Fort-de-France while sick passengers onboard are tested. The ship’s passengers were not the only ones who found themselves floating out at sea. The island of Barbados had also denied landing rights to the Fred Olsen Cruise Line Braemar Thursday after it confirmed that four crew members and a passenger had tested positive for COVID-19. Two weeks earlier the ship had been turned away from the Dominican Republic for fear several people aboard with flu-like symptoms might be carrying coronavirus. On Wednesday, the ship’s passing near Haiti’s southern coast created panic in the town of Port Salut after passengers heard there were people with COVID-19 aboard. On its way to late Thursday, the Braemar said in a statement it was “working with the Bahamas, the UK government, UK Chamber of Shipping and Public Heath England to ensure that all guests can return home as soon as possible.” The crew and guest had tested positive the day before while the ship was docked in Willemstad, Curaçao the statement said. The test results of another guests were inconclusive. Read more… https://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/haiti/article241136896.html
