INTRODUCTION Class TELEOSTOMI Order CLUPEIFORMES A total of 87 type specimens of the Phylum Chordata is Family STERNOPTYCHIDAE registered in the collections of the Tasmanian Museum and Genus Polyipnus Gunther, 1887 Art Gallery. This catalogue lists the types, together with the Po/yipnus tridentifer McCulloch, 1914 original name and reference. Subsequent changes in taxonomy Biol. Res. Family PYURIDAE Locality: Swan River, Tasmania, 22 Feb. 1978, W. Fulton Genus Pyura Molina, 1872 and R. McOowall. Pyura tasmanensis Kott, 1985 Note: Condition excellent. Mem. QldMus. 23, 1985: 331 Galaxias parvus Frankenberg, 1968 Holotype: 01881, spirit specimen. Aust. Zoo!. l 4(3), 1968: 270 Paratypes: 01877 (7), spirit specimens. Locality: Ralphs Bay Neck Canal, Tasmania, 15 Aug. 1938, Holotype: 0940, spirit specimen. R. Hetherington. Locality: Lake Pedder, Tasmania, 1-3 Feb. 1967, Note: The holotype and para types were selected from a R. Frankenberg. sample originally registered as 0720. Condition good. Note: This species was described before the full size range was known, resulting in a juvenile being selected as the holotype. The size of adult G. parvus is given by Andrews (1976). Mus. 2(5), 1893: 62 Locality: Lake Pedder, Tasmania, 1-3 Feb. 1967, = Oxynotus bruniensis (Ogilby), 1893 R. Frankenberg. Note: As the holotype is only 49 mm standard length, it is clearly a juvenile specimen. Adult G. pedderensis can attain a Holotype: 0154, dried mounted skin. standard length of 97 mm (Andrews 1976). Condition Locality: Bruny Island, Tasmania, date and collector excellent. unknown. Note: Collected as a dead beach-washed specimen and is in a fair state of preservation. Note: Paratypes were taken from Lake Field and Lake Galaxias niger Andrews, 1985 Dudleywhich are part ofthe Julian Lakes complex. Condition Pap. Proc. R. Soc. Tasm. 119, 1985: 56 excellent. Holotype: D 1926, spirit specimen. Paratypes: D 1927, D 1928 (2), spirit specimens. Order LOPHIIFORMES Locality: Reservoir Lakes, Tasmania, 21 Mar. 1984, Family ANTENNARIiDAE P. Andrews. Genus Antennarius Cuvier, 1816 Note: Fulton (1990), without justification, implied confusion Antennarius mitchelli Morton, 1897 between this species and C. brevipinnis Gunther. Pap. Proc. R. Soc. Tasmo 1897: 98 the two are clearly distinct and can be distinguished on = Trichophryne mitchelli (Morton), '1897 meristic data alone. Dorsal fin rays in C. niger range from 8-10 with a mean of 9.2 from 20 counts, whereas Iiolotype: D 136, spirit specimen. C. brevipinnisranged from 11-14 with a mean of 13.9 from Locality: Lisdillon, east coast, Tasmania, 1895, Miss Mitchell. 34 counts. Similarly, anal fin rays in C. niger ranged from 9- Note; Old registration number TM3566 and TM5163. This II with a mean of 10.1 as against a range of 12-15, mean specimen was apparently registered twice, in error, under the 13.9, in C. brevipinnis. TM system. Condition good. Other differences include the absence of enlarged lateral canine teeth in C. niger, together with the reduced pyloric caeca and the smaller paired fins. Condition excellent. Cowper. Locality: Shannon River below Miena dam. Great Lake, Note: Some damage to the caudal fin and thoracic area but Tasmania, 3 Dec. 1933, E.O.G. Scott. othetwise in fair condition. Note: The second paratype, 0996, was originally lodged with the Zoology Department, University of Tasmania, and was transferred to the Tasmanian Museum in 1969. McCuiloch, 1911 = N lillieiRegan (McCuHoch 1914: 91). Note: Specimen labelled "Austroberyx brevis McCulloch, Old registration number 033, Australian Museum number 1911, Cotype gen. et. sp.", McCulloch, however, makes no E2145.
