NEWSLETTER January – April 2012 ISSN 0791-1221 Dear IAAH Members, Happy New Year to all and welcome to the spring newsletter wherein we outline our programme for the forthcoming months. Firstly, I would like to thank all who contributed to a successful and diverse programme of lectures and tours, and trips abroad over the course of 2011. We had an especially busy last few months to the year with a lecture from Dr Michael Ryan, former Director of the Chester Beatty Library, a trip to the museums and galleries of Liverpool, a lecture on Tintoretto’s Susanna and the Elders from Dr Audrey Nicholls, and stimulating lecture & follow- up discussion on the topic of Vermeer and the lure of Dutch genre painting with Dr Adriaan Waiboer, curator of Northern European Art at the National Gallery. Secondly, the committee would like to draw your attention to the forthcoming IAAH/Artefact Study Day. A long established event in the Association’s calendar, the annual Study Day is central to our aim to promote the research currently being undertaken countrywide in art & architectural history, design history, material and visual culture studies. The Study Day is scheduled for Saturday, 14 April. We would be delighted to hear research proposals from our members and have included a call-for-papers in the Newsletter. Submissions for consideration are not limited to the IAAH members so please do circulate this call-for-papers to colleagues, post-graduate researchers etc. Further information regarding the Study Day will be available on the IAAH/Artefact website www.artefactjournal.com. In addition, the website contains information relating to the submission of articles for consideration in Issue 6 of Artefact. -

Chapter 6 THE WEST counties Clare -- Galway -- Mayo – Sligo LIMERICK - CLARE Castleconnel What the Limerickman, Michael Hartnett , calls 'the celebrated Anglo-Irish stew' was to a large extent cooked in the West. There are many reasons why: among them the survival of the Irish language in this remote part, and the fact that many of the gentry who devoted themselves to the Irish Literary Revival -- Lady Gregory, Douglas Hyde, Edward Martyn, and others -- lived in the West. The Shannon is the great divide, the West begins beyond it, and one place to cross it is at O'Brien's Bridge north of Limerick, near Castleconnel , where William Wordsworth went in 1829. Many of Wordsworth's letters from Ireland are frustrating; he says he has had an interesting time, but will tell them about it when he gets home -- 'it is late, and I will not enter into particulars'. An exception is a description of his taking a boat on the rapids at Castleconnel. These are not so fierce now, because of the hydro-electric scheme up-river, but they are still turbulent enough [1] : [We] breakfasted at Castleconnel, a very agreeably situated village on the banks of the Shannon... the Shores of the River are sprinkled with Villas and gay pleasure- boxes. On a bold limestone rock stand and lie the remains of an old Castle overgrown or richly hung with ivy -- the whole landscape exceedingly pleasing. Here we took boat perhaps a little incautiously, and soon found ourselves in the noisy bed of the Shannon among water breaks and wears for the catching of salmon. -

An Introduction to the Work of Maud Cotter Maud Cotter's recent incursions into the Icelandic landscape should come as no surprise to those of you have followed her work over the past ten years ten or so years. Her visits to Iceland in the last two years have compounded and provoked her growing fascination with the interpretation of an energized surface, with whirling, bisecting lines piercing and defining spaces as she explores the processes of decay and emergence; and her desire to pierce and penetrate exterior facades of ancient mystery so as to strike up new formal structures and planes of greater depth and inferred resonance. This is a continuation of the concern with the relationship between land mass and weight and its articulation and mood within the landscape, where obtrusion and recession in their implied energy coax her to explore fresh ambiguities and interspatial definitions beyond her long-held biodynamic preoccupations. A notable aspect of the richness of her work hitherto has been her sculptural approach, building layer upon layer. The legacies of Turner, Ruskin and Cézanne are clear in her intimate approach to the structure of landscape- even Constable, in a mixed media mood drawing like Vagrant Sky; in her intensely personal response to the awesome Icelandic interior through a series of prismatically coloured graphic studies with poignant titles, she recalls Goya, not least for the phrases she uses to denote each image. The influences of Miro, Klee, Kandinsky and Ernst are now more relevant to her free-standing sculptural pieces, although Marc and the 13th century French and English stained glass are still a force in her stained glass panels.
