The 1870 Troy census shows Bridget McParlin 36, b. , with 4 children. Children b. NY & she must be a widow as no husband listed and youngest child is 2. Her occupation is brush drawing. > Dennis Hogan 19, b. Ireland, is within the household

Bridget is also in the 1880 census of Lansingburgh (she was there in 1870), spelled Bridget McParttin, age 44 with 5 children: Mary is 19, John 17, Stephen 15, William 13, and Kate 9. John and Stephen both work as brush makers. It is odd that there would be another child, if she is in fact widowed... In 1860, there is a Bridget McFarlin, 24 in Lansingburgh with husband Frank. In the household are several others who are brush makers, probably unrelated (there were brush factories in Lansingburgh). It's likely that this is the same Bridget as she is the right age and born Ireland. There were other McFarlin and McParland families in Lansingburgh, possibly related. I just played around with the census on Ancestry.com, using the soundex etc. Names were never spelled correctly or consistently in the census, so it's always necessary to play around with every spelling possibility, and also search for people's ages - plugging in approx dates of birth and places of birth, looking for all possibilities, including other states.... Also, if you know that Dennis Hogan came From Co. Limerick, I would write to the Heritage Center there and see if they can find anything on his family. Search on CyndisList.com -- there are lots of hits for Limerick. Good luck, Rebecca Rector www.rbinforesearch.com

After seeing a message about The Keener by Maura D. Shaw on this list, I purchased a copy. It is an excellent novel about life and conditions in Ireland at the time of the famine. The main characters emigrate to Troy in order to survive and I think t he author gives a very good picture of life and conditions in Troy in the second half of the 1800s. I think anyone on this list would be interested in this book. Happy reading.

Dear list, I ,too, have read Maura Shaw's wonderful book which I obtained at her reading and signing event at the Arts Center in Troy,March 11th. My grandparents,John and Johanna (McGrath) Shaw lived on 4th St in south Troy so this book was really exciting for me to read. Upon reading this book you will realize how much research was done to complete this book and I know the list members will enjoy this book as much as I have.Mary (Welch) Hayes

Hello Mary:

Your mention of Johanna McGrath caught my attention as I had just finished checking Page 66-1 from the Burden Death Record project. The following McGrath was listed on that page. My great grandmother in Ireland, by the way, was a Johanna Hayes McGrath from Thurles, Tipperary.

"McGRATH-In this city, Oct. 24, 1894, Johanna, wife of Patrick McGrath. Funeral from the residence, 134 Third street, on Saturday morning at 9 o'clock, and thence to St. Mary's church, where a requiem high mass will be celebrated. Friends are invited to attend. "

There are only THREE more pages to be done on the Burden Death Record project and shortly we will have approximately 6,000 records on-line searchable by name.

Hi All

We will be starting the coping of St. Joseph, Holy Trinity and St. Lawrence in Troy.

The Date is next Tuesday Apr 19th at 9:00AM sharp! We are going to work until 5pm so bring a small lunch with you or if you wish we can go for lunch around the corner at sub way. If you can't do a whole day, let me know and maybe we can spit a the day with someone. The parish is more strict then the others that I've done. They would like a list of all the people coming to help. I told him I would do the best I can. As you know with my job it is hard for me to be there in the future, I will do my best to go as often as possible. Kevin Pemrick will be heading some of those day's I will also be asking Carol Weldron To take charge if she has the time and wouldn't mind doing it. It is always good to have a spoke person around.

Kevin Pemrick will be going on Saturday, April 23 at 10am to 2pm again there hours. I will also be doing a list for helpers then as well. We will be working with 2 copiers so I would like 6 people if possible. Two on each machine and one for each copier to proof all work coming out. Usually we take turns doing all the different spots. Wear sneakers or something that is conformable.

I have only one request If the staff or administrator asked any question on this project you are to refer them to m e. All question of any type are to be referred to me and only me. One of the reason why this project was put on hold was people were calling and asking of the project was completed. We hadn't even started it and I received a call with all kind of question from the administrator.

Please contact me ASAP

Celebrate Patriots' Day with Free Access to a Premium DB at NewEnglandAncestors.Org

In recognition of Patriot's Day on April 18, the New England Historic Genealogical Society will offer three days of free access to one of our major databases at NewEnglandAncestors.Org. The name of the database and access details will appear in the April 20, 2005, issue of the NEHGS eNews.

The complimentary open access period begins Wednesday afternoon, April 20, and ends seventy- two hours later on Saturday afternoon, April 23. If you are not yet a member of NEHGS, but want to spend some time researching in one of our premium databases, this is your chance. Now that tax season is behind us, we invite you to spend some of your free time researching your early New England ancestors.

Patriots' Day is a unique holiday in Massachusetts, home of NEHGS. It commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord which took place on April 19, 1775. It is a state holiday in Massachusetts, Maine, and Wisconsin. In addition to its great historical significance, it is now known to many as the day of the running of the Boston Marathon. NEHGS will tie the holiday to this special database promotion and link genealogists everywhere to a piece of their New England heritage.

The easiest way to learn which database will be offered, and how to link to it, is to subscribe to the NEHGS eNews at http://www.newenglandancestors.org/education/articles/NEXUS_eNews/enews_main

.asp. As soon as the eNews is sent next Wednesday afternoon, we will also place a link on our homepage at www.NewEnglandAncestors.org .

We invite you to forward this offer to a friend.

Hi Pat

I belong to a group who copy Catholic Church records We have copied over 45 churches in the local area since 1996. After receiving permission from the Bishop over 10 years ago I have copied and printed many churches with the help of over 20 very loyal people that do Data entering on the different parishes at one time. Right now we are completing St. Joseph in Cohoes Baptismal records and St. Paul's in Hudson Falls, NY is completed and is waiting to be printed. We are also working on St. Anthony's in Schenectady, and Our lady of Angel's in Albany. Chuck and the Carmelite Fathers feel this will help the hundreds of people contacting them yearly for Geneo information. When this project is completed you will be able to research your family by just looking up the whole family on one page. Marr/Death/Baptiaml. NO MORE BEGGING FOR INFO THAT IS YOURS!

I hope you and other can take part of this great project as well as I need help with data entering in the other parishes that I'm doing. Everyone has been so great helping with parishes of no interest to them, but for the sake of Genealogy they help.

I will need a least 10 people or more for data entering this large project, so please ask around for helpers in your group. There are a few other Troy parishes that I'm now working on coping and will let you all know where and when. These are the Following parishes completed.

Hi All

I know some of you had sent me info on doing data entering, I need to have the following info.

Name/maidan/marraged name/address/phone contact's and any languages that you can read, even if it a little. For example Latin/german/Polish/ etc. No big deal if you can only read english.

I received a note from PJ? I'm not sure who this is Also a Doris Reilly a friend of Kay R.

We will not be doing the data entering on this for a while, as it will take a while to copy and set up in files.

I really need help with Our Lady of Angels in Albany for data entering

Thanks

David

Hi David,

Your efforts are fantastic!

Will the information ever be made available on the Internet?

(Of course this would be helpful for those of us who can't make it to the parish and who have lots of surnames to look for.)

I am looking for James MARTIN who supposedly married Mary O'LEARY probably about 1855-60. I thought I had the right family and that James had been married first to a Catharine as they were listed with sons John and James of the right ages. Then on a trip to Salt Lake last week I turned up both families in the 1880 census with sons of the same age. I only know that John had the middle initial H. and that he married Anna WACHTEL about 1902. I have not been able to find either marriage record. I do have the WACHTEL census and cemetery records. John and Anna moved to Seattle, Washington in about 1904, raised their 3 sons and died there. I obtained the baptism record for James and Catherine MARTIN'S first son, William and thought I was on the way to finding the father of James until I realized there are two James MARTINs. Any help from someone with access to church records would be gratefully received. I subscribe to most of the Ancestry data bases and would be happy to do a lookup for others. Jan Martin

I don't know if you know but there were millions of Armenians killed by the Turks who intended to practice their genocide till the Armenians were all gone. Sorry that I wasn't more specific. I am looking for church records in the Troy area. My husband's father, Theodore Roosevelt Martin was born in Cohoes, New York. The family of James and Mary Martin are living in the 8th Ward of the City of Troy, Rensselaer County, New York in the 1875 census. Sons William 14, John 12 and James 7 are listed as being born in Albany County. That would be between 1851 and 1858. Thomas age 1 was born in Rensselaer County. The census was taken in June 1, 1875. James is 40 and born in Ireland (about 1835). In 1870 I found James and Catherine with sons matching the 3 older boys of just the right ages in the Village of West Troy.

In 1875 William Martin, a carpenter lived at rear 242 Fourth Street, Village of West Troy. In 1876 William is apparently gone and James Martin, laborer now lives at that address and continues there until 1884 when a James Martin, laborer appears at 19 Hill. This information was taken from the City Directory for Troy & Lansingburgh, E. Troy & Green Island, Cohoes & Waterford. The residence for James is confirmed in the 1870 and 1880 census.

I obtained a certificate of Baptism for William Martin born at Watervliet, New York on 26 March 1861, baptized 30 March 1861 by Rev. William Fernelly, Church of St. Patrick, 515 19th Street, Watervliet, N. Y. Sponsors- John Graulty and Elizabeth Martin. The Martin family name disappears from the records of that church in 1876. I did look at records of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church when I was in Troy but found no mention of James and Mary Martin.

I have not been able to find marriage records for James and Mary (O'Leary) Martin nor for John H. and Anna (Wachtel) Martin. The latter couple may have been married at St. Henry's Catholic Church where most of Anna's family are buried. Several letters to St. Henry's have produced no response though $20 checks have been cashed. Again any help or suggestions will be appreciated. Jan Martin

Hi Jan

I have the B/D/M records for St. Patrick in Troy and as well as St. Jean The Baptiste and I found no name matching the names you gave. But there were a lot of Martins in there thought. I also looked in the St. Joseph in Cohoes, NY mar book and again I found many Martins but none of the names you gave.

Kevin Pemrick who belongs to this group is related to the Martin fami ly. But truly related to most of Troy :) both of his familles go a long way back in the area.

I think when you make your next trip to the area, you should stop at St. Henry's and remind them that you sent them a check for "research" and not a donation to there fund. The Canon law is that everyone is initialed to there family info. The exception is if there is a mark on the record, annulment, adoption's, illegitimate births. (These are all conferential) Depending on the staff at a church, they can be grea t or really miserable! Good luck

Hi Susan, Was at the Troy Library today. Elizabeth and Margaret lived at 17 Olmstead in 1922, ditto 1923. In 1924 directory Elizabeth it states died July 22, 1924. Margaret continued to live at this address until1930. In the 1930 directory it states she lived at 147 Saratoga St., ditto 1931, 1932, 1933, and 1934. In 1935 the directory states she lived at 187 Main St., ditto 1936. In 1937 it states 149 Saratoga St., ditto 1938. That's where I left off for today, my eyes were getting a little tired. So I'm guessing she should have been in the 1930 census unless for some reason she was not counted. I'll go back another day and see how far it goes. Later directories they had just put down Margt for her first name but I'm sure it's still her. Pat

As I understand it, there was a large community of Armenians who lived around an Armenian Church on 5th avenue between Grand and Jacob Streets. Now the only Armenian Church I know of in Troy is on Spring Avenue opposite to where the old Van der Heyden Hall used to be.

ANNOUNCING NEW DATABASE: TROY, NY AREA DEATH RECORDS (1890-1895)

The message can be forwarded to other lists where you feel it would be appropriate.

If you are researching relatives with a TROY, NY area connection, you will be interested in this new on-line, name searchable, data base of death records which is under construction.

Members of the Troy Irish Genealogy Society have been working with the Rensselaer County Historical Society, 57 Second Street, Troy, NY 12180, in automating various records from the Burden Iron Co. collection of papers.

The latest project which is going on-line, in stages, is a database of deaths from newspaper clippings from Troy, New York newspapers which were collected by employees of the Burden Iron Company. The 73 pages of records cover the period March 1890 through April 1895 and list 6,031 surnames. Records cover individuals from Troy and all the surrounding communities, as well as a number of entries from other areas of New York State and other states. There are even a few records covering deaths in foreign countries. These death records cover the general population in the area and are not restricted to Irish surnames.

All 6,031 records have been date entered and are now being formatted to go on line. As of Thursday, April 21, the first 141 records, whi ch cover ALL surnames beginning with the letter "A" are on line. Subsequent letters of the alphabet will be added as soon as possible and it is expected that all 6,031 records will be available for searching before the end of May.

Twenty-six volunteers from the Rensselaer County mailing list as well as the Troy Irish Genealogy List transcribed these records. Eighteen of the volunteers were from the Troy area while the other volunteers lived in Massachusetts, Iowa, Utah, North Carolina, Michigan, Maryland and California.

You can view these records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website located at: 90

www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ and click on TIGS PROJECTS. Check back at the site frequently to see additional death record names as they are added.

You will also be able to review other records automated by TIGS members; Burden Iron Company Steam Mill Payroll Records, Troy Area Marriage Records and an index to names listed in the book, "History of the Troy Police Department". These data bases are part of a continuing effort by the Troy Irish Genealogy Group to make available on line, Troy area records that will be of interest to researchers.

There is a wealth of information in these death notices. In addition to the NAME of the deceased, you MAY find the following information:

Street address of Residence. * Date of Death. * Time of Death. Place of Death. * Cause of Death Age at Death. * Date of Birth. Place of Birth. Occupation. Name of Employer. Maiden Name. Middle Name. Names of other Relatives. Names of In-Laws. Military Rank & Unit Designation. Funeral Services. * Place of Interment. *

* Almost all of the death records will show these particular items.

There are also a number of very moving lengthy obituaries as well as a few memorial poems.

Many of the records carry entries at the end of the obituary like "12-3-t*. It is thought that these entries were for the typesetters and represent the date the notice first ran and how many times it was to be published .

Even if you do not find a surname you are researching, the material is informative about the time period where death came at a very early age to a large number of infants and young people. The material also gives a perspective on funeral customs of the time where nearly all events took place at the family residence, and how some funerals were linked to the arrival of local trains where carriages would be awaiting the arrival of mourners. The given names of the 6,000 plus individuals show the names in vogue during the mid to late 1800's. A large number of notices also carry instructions for out of area newspapers to "PLEASE COPY" the notice and some particular newspapers are even mentioned by name.

I would be interested in hearing from individuals who found the data base useful in locating their relatives. You can write me off list at: [email protected]

I also want to express my thanks to the volunteers for the great job they did on this project.

91 Regards,

Bill McGrath Clifton Park, NY

Hi! Thank you for re-posting this. I'm from the Capital District area and am researching my biological maternal family from Troy, NY: William Lewis (ggf), Mary Murphy Lewis(ggm), & Bridget McGinty (gggm, not sure of spelling on McGinty-have not seen any matches). I'm a 5th generation descendent of women who worked at the the Arrow Shirt Factory (Cluett & Peabody) in Troy. Bridget and Mary emigrated here from Co. Sligo when Mary was a child. I'm very familiar with your meeting locations and would love to attend them as time permits..

List Administrator

Welcome to the NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC mailing list! This list is for discussion of the Troy, New York (and surrounding areas) Irish ancestry.

Check out our website to see what we are all about at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/

Please post a message to the list with the surnames you are researching. List members will be happy to help you. 95

If you are local to the Troy area, we have a live meeting on the 3rd Thurs. of each month, in an area location. Watch the list for details.

You are currently subscribed in

"mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to NY-TROY-IRISH-GENSOC as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below.

1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to

[email protected]

that contains (in the body of the message) the command

unsubscribe

and no additional text.

2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), re-contact the list administrator (see #6).

3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to

[email protected] to discontinue mail mode. Second,

96 send the command "subscribe" to [email protected] to start receiving digests.

4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode.

All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again.

5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to [email protected] . It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode.

You don't need to send it explicitly to both.

6. Because there can be a lot of activity on this list, when posting please stay to our list topic(s)(the Troy area and/or Irish ancestry), and take other "conversations" off-list (send directly to the other list member and not to the entire list). Also, please keep your postings friendly and courteous to others. Members who do not comply after repeated friendly reminders from the administrator, are subject to removal from the list.

7. To contact the administrator of this mailing list, send mail to

[email protected] .

Trudy, this is a real long shot but; my gr-grandfather was Michael Cooney born Ire. 11/1860, in Troy NY 1865. I followed him through the census, directories, etc. and all I had was that he was married to Margaret, born 7/1865. Recently found record of the marriage of their daughter in St. Patricks in Troy. That record showed Margaret's surname to be Martin. Did you have any Martins In Troy? Do you have anything on a Margaret born 1865 to any of your Martins? I have found only one good possibility, th at being a John Martin in the 1870 census, Town of Hoosick (not far fromTroy). John born in Ireland, 50 at the time of the census, wife Margaret E. (32 yrs) with children Catherine 12, James 8, MARGARET 5 and William 4. One other a Edward Martin in 6th Ward, Troy, with a MARGARET aged 8? and then a John Martin in Schaticoke(near Troy) with MARGARET aged 1? I know that the census takers erred on ages often. Anything in your records?? Kristin Cooney-Ayotte

Hi Trudy:

In reply to your posting on the name Martin, I have two Martin's in my family tree.

1. Thomas J. Martin married my relative Mary E. McCormick

Thomas was born in Troy, NY to James and Mary Martin. He died in Troy on September 25, 1949. Mr. Martin was a retired Captain in the Troy Fire Department.

Thomas and his wife Mary McCormick had no children. His obit indicates there were no immediate survivors.

Outside of the newspaper obit and funeral notice, that is all I know about him.

2. A Mary Martin married a Maurice Rainey, most likely in Troy, in the mid 1850's. His son, Maurice, married Anna Carroll, a sister of my grandmother Mary Elizabeth O'Connor.

That is all I know about Mary Martin.

Not much to go on.

Regards,

Bill McGrath Clifton Park, NY

Kris, As you are the current secretary and VP candidate, why don't you go ahead and contact them as you suggested, and explain the Emly connection with TIGS? If I were you, I would Email or write to them directly, rather than just post on their guestbook.

They DO have a very nice website! Pictures of Emly, history, etc. But no actual records are posted. They mention "well-kept parish records." I have a feeling that they charge for research, but they do not say this on the site so I could be wrong. They do charge $200 for a memorial to their emigrant wall.

As mentioned previously in a write-up on research techniques, you should always look for the newspaper story on the funeral services for the deceased. While this is generally not done in the papers today, the earlier years of the Troy newspapers always carried such an item.

The useful information in these articles is the name of the pall bearers which show family name connecti ons and in some cases, identifies the relationship to the deceased. Many of the items I have collected mention in the write-up my mother, Mary Elizabeth O'Connor McGrath (1901-1981) as the organist in St. Michael's Church, Troy and my Aunt, Agnes Theresa O'Connor (1912-2002) as the soloist. Most of my family resided in St. Michael's Parish and the large number of surnames in the O'Connor, McCormick, Halpin, Keating and McGrath lines buried from St. Michael's have my mother mentioned as the organist in the write-up.

Also outlined in the newspaper articles are the songs used at the burial service. The titles of the songs are generally unknown to us today since they are no longer used in the liturgy, but they sound like there were beautiful and appropriate to the occasion. I have looked through my collection of burials notices on family members and have come up with the following list of songs, the year of the funeral and the family name involved. As mentioned previously in a write-up on research techniques, you should always look for the newspaper story on the funeral services for the deceased. While this is generally not done in the papers today, the earlier years of the Troy newspapers always carried such an item.

The useful information in these articles is the name of the pall bearers which show family name connections and in some cases, identifies the relationship t o the deceased.

I would like to propose that those who are interested in dinner before our meeting could gather at a local restaurant before the next meeting (Thurs. May 19). I would suggest meeting someplace between 5-5:30, and then having our business meeting start at City Hall at 6:30. I love the social gathering outside of the meeting, but it is too late for me afterwards.

Is anyone who attends the local meetings interested in this idea?

Thanks,

Donna

Oh my, in reading my posting (below), I hope that didn't sound like I chose that song for my funeral because I think I'M great (How Great Thou Art). It's just one of my favorite spiritual songs. Obviously, the song is about Our Higher Power and how great GOD is. Not to make a religious statement on the list. (I'm reall y trying NOT to offend anyone here!)

Seriously, I was surprised not to see that song on the list of funeral songs that Bill provided, as it's pretty popular for funerals. But I guess families do choose to repeat the same songs as part of their own family ritual.

How Great Thou Art was written over a hundred years ago and is used in many different denominational churches.

Categories: GENEALOGY TIGS

The following information may help researchers looking at South Troy records.

My McCormick's, Halpin's and Keating's all lived on Forbes Avenue, which is the very last street on the left just before crossing the Troy-Menands Bridge over the Hudson River.

I have found most records of these family names in the Troy City re cords but was puzzled that earlier records were not there.

In looking at the McCormick name in the 1900 census recently, I found my answer to the puzzle. The census page for my McCormick family was identified as North Greenbush, NY (not Troy) and annotated with the words "Annexed to City of Troy - January 1, 1901". So that section of South Troy was the Town of North Greenbush prior to January 1, 1901 and my missing records would be in the North Greenbush vital statistics office instead of in Troy.

To top it off, the census taker had sloppy handwriting so Matthew McCormick and one of his sons names Matthew, were listed in the census index as "Watherin McCormick" and "Wathern McCormick Jr."

Regards,

Bill McGrath Clifton Park, NY

In regards to church music, our priest last weekend told this story:

A preacher was giving his homily and told the congregation "we should pour all the liquor in the river". The congregation gave a big "AMEN". He continued by stating "we should then pour all the wine in the river"; another big "AMEN" followed. Finally he stated "we should then pour all the beer in the river"; that too was followed by a big "AMEN". The preacher goes and sits to wait for the music director to start. The music director just stands there looking at the preacher then out to the congregation and then back to the preacher. He slowly walks to the microphone and gently says our next hymn is "Shall We Gather at The River".

I think that'd have to my funeral song...being Irish and all!

We lived at 430 First Street when I was little (1960's). My grandparents (Marie [Clancy] & John Powers) owned the house we lived in. We were on the first floor and my g. aunt and uncle lived upstairs. (Mary & Mike Nugent. She was a nurse and worked at Eden Park Nursing home but helped several of the neighbors at times.)

I never have been charged for any information I have gotten from the parish of Emly.

They have been more than generous with their time and information; needless to say, I did make a contribution to the church, but I was not asked to do so at any time.

I think linking up with Emly is an excellent idea.

One of the reasons they charge $200 for the inscription on their monument, exactly the same charge I paid for an Ellis Island inscription by the way, is the hope to restore one of their wonderful little buildings (near the church, and I forget what it used to be). They wanted to turn this into a genealogical center for all of the descendents of those who left Emly. They did not raise nearly enough from the monument in 2000 to restore their buildings.

I got a couple of relatives to kick in with me for our inscription, so the cost was not awful, and this center would be totally to our advantage.

I went to one day of Failte Week 2000. The lecture and events I attended were wonderful, and the hospitality superb. If you have an Emly connection and can go, I would suggest you do so.

Now I will climb off my soapbox. :o)

Hello

Helen Batters Rowley here, and I am so happy to see the name of EMLY appearing!

I narrowed down the strongest possibilities of a place in Ireland that the Batters family emigrated from, and I came up with Emly. I have wanted to get to more research for a long time. I have visited their lovely website and imagined my ancestors living there. I will be happy to contribute if we as a group can "adopt" the village - or give a group lump sum contribution for information kept there.

>From The National Hibernian, "Genealogical Department" column, Nov. 1924:

"The O'Connor, O'Connor, Connor, Conners, etc.: one of the most numerous and widespread of Irish family names. The name signifies high-will or desire; it is an ancient personal name. There are at least six distinct families so called, namely: the Connors of Connacht, who derive their name and descent from Concobar, King of Connacht in the latter part of the 10th century, and were long the ruling race in that province, and of whom 2 became kings of all Ireland. They were divided into 3 great branches: O'Concobar ?Oonn (the brown O'Connor), O'Concobar Ruad (the red O'Connor) and O'Concobar Sligoac (the O'Connor of Sligo). The present head of the family is known as the O'Conor Don. 2. The O'Connors of Offaly, who derive their descent from Ros Failghe, son of Cathabir Mor, King of Ireland in the second century, and their surname from Concobar, son of Flonn, Lord of Offaly, who died in the year 979. They were a powerful and warlike race, and for more than 300 years succ! essfully defended their territory against the English of the Pale. Their chief stronghold was Dangan, now Philipstown. They were dispossessed in the reign of Philip and Mary." to be continued....

"3. O'Connor of Kerry. Before the Anglo-Norman invasion the head of this family was lord of that portion of Kerry lying between Tralee and the Shannon, but owing to the encroachments of the Fitzmaurices and other Anglo Norman settlers, this territory was narrowed down to the limits of the present of Iraghticonor, which remained in the possession of the family until the close of the reign of Elizabeth, when it was confiscated and given to Trinity College. The chief stronghold of the O'Connors was Carrigafoyle, near Ballylongford. 4. O'Connor of Corcomroe. This family derives its name from Concobar, son of ?Maelaeachlain, lord of Corcomroe, who was slain in the year 1002, and the head of the family was lord of the barony of Corcomore in West Clare, down to the close of the 16th century. 5. O'Connor of Keenaght. The head of this family was lord of ?C____, now the barony of Keenaght in County Derry until dispossessed by the family of O'Kane, shortly before the An! glo-Norman invasion. 6. O'Connor of Ul Bru_____a branch of the O______." (Sorry, that part of the copy was pretty blurred.)

If anyone can actually use this information because they have gotten back that far, I am VERY jealous.
