Squad Updates Page 7

Over the last few weeks, I have managed to conduct parent meetings for almost all of the squads, so hopefully you will all now have up to date information about the season ahead, and our vision and mission as a Club. We are now in the middle of the 2015 Club Championships, which have been very exciting so far! We have some outstanding early season racing, and it looks like it is going to be an exciting season to come. Thank you to all the parents, volunteers and coaches who have ensured the Club Championships run smoothly - we couldn't do it without you! Some highlights from the summer are detailed below:

Scott Quin Elite squad swimmer Scott Quin took park in the IPC World Championships in Glasgow in July. Swimming his main event on Day 1, Scott qualified for the final of the SB14 100 Breaststroke. With strong home support (his whole squad were in the stands), Scott won a fantastic silver medal in the final; his first at World level! Scott is now back in training, focusing on being able to equal or better this achievement at next year’s in Rio!

Scott with his silver medal and the Elite Squad Keri-anne Payne Elite squad swimmer Keri-anne Payne finished 14th in the 10km marathon event at the recent World Championships in Kazan. Hoping for a top 10 finish, it was a very challenging race, with over 60 females taking part. This was Keri-anne's seventh World Championship outing and a key step in her journey towards Rio 2016. Following on from this, Keri-anne travelled to Rio for the Olympic Test event, a 10km open water race held in Copacabana Beach! Keri-anne successfully won this race, which was a fantastic result! Keri-anne and Laurel at the Rio Test Dan Wallace event on Copacabana Beach! We are very proud of Warrender member Dan Wallace's outstanding performances at the World Championships in Kazan this summer. Although Dan trains with the , he still represents Warrender when he is at home each year. Dan finished with a 4th place in the 200 Individual Medley and a gold medal as a member of the 4x200 Freestyle relay team. British Summer Nationals This summer saw the introduction of the new British Summer National Championships; a competition for the fastest 24 athletes in each event, for each age group in Britain. Held in Sheffield, Warrender had a team of over 20 athletes take part, one of our biggest teams ever! Stand out performances came from 15 year old George Clough and 14 year old Archie Goodburn, both producing outstanding performances across a number of events throughout the week. George finished with silver medals in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke, and the 200 Individual Medley, while Archie had top five fin- ishes in the 100 Butterfly, 50 and 100 Breaststroke, and 200 Individual Medley events. Other medallists during the week were Alyshia McCracken (Gold, 19/over 5km open water), Scott Quin (Gold, MC 100 Breaststroke) and Craig McNally (Gold, 19/over 200 Backstroke). Coaching - Farewells & Welcomes! It is always very sad to say farewell to coaches that have worked with us over a period of time, and sadly this summer we have said farewell to a number of our coaches! I would like to thank Katie Gray (Youth Squad), Maxine McLaughlin (Wilkie Red), Dani Villaverde (Age Group) and James McMeekin (Smith White) for their fantastic commitment and energy over the time they have been with us, and I wish them all the very best of luck for the future. I would like to welcome some new coaches to the team, and I am really looking forward to working with them over the next 12 months. Jenn Davis (Benson Red), Jess Wilkie (Junior Age), and Laura Duran Suja (Smith White), have all started working with us and are settling in well. Craig Mitchell (National Girls) has returned after a year away down south, and we will soon welcome a new coach to take on Wilkie Red and Age Group Squad. I would like to thank Lindsay Powell for her contribution throughout the last six weeks, in helping to coach these two squads until a new coach is in place! I look forward to another exciting year of swimming, and watching all the fantastic results across the Club throughout the season!

The swimmers, after the necessary battery recharging during the summer break, have started the season strongly with a hunger for success! At this stage, the swimmers pursue a training programme to build up their fitness and they are already in full training programme (9 sessions per week). The racing has also started last week with the first day of Club Championships. Also, at the beginning of September, Niamh Ritchie and Katy Smith represented the squad and the club at the Sainsbury’s UK School Games in Manchester. The two girls achieved good performances considering that they had trained only a few times after the summer break.
