    Centennial of The United States of America’s Entrance Into World War I (A Medallic Tribute) by Richard C. Jewell Finally after years of attempting to keep us out of the war in Europe President Woodrow Wilson on the 6th of April 1917 asked Congress to declare war on Germany. His patience having been exhausted in his dealings with the Imperial German Government and the American people having been stirred up by a series of incidents including the sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman note, the time had come for America’s entrance into the War to end all Wars. The American Numismatic Society decided to commemorate America’s entrance into the First World War with a medal. Eli Harvey (1860-1957) was commissioned and his Declaration of War Medal, 1917 was the result. It was bronze, 3-1/2 inches in diameter, produced by the Medallic Art Company, New York. It was to be a single sided piece with a large fierce looking Eagle with its wings spread, perched on a rock with the date APRIL 6, 1917 below. There were 113 issued in bronze and another 50 issued in silver. French Premier Alexandre Ribot sent a mission to the United States soon after President Wilson asked Congress to declare war. The French Mission contained both political and military representatives of the Third Republic. Their reason for existence was to coordinate American participation in the Great War. The member of the mission, who stood out the most to the leaders of the Wilson Administration, the Congress and the U.S.

Built 1912-16; addition 1920-22; William Welles Bosworth, architect Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 80, Lot 1 On April 18, 2006, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation of the American Telephone & Telegraph Building, First Floor Interior (Item No. 6). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Three witnesses, including the owner and a representative of owner, testified in support of the designation. There was no testimony in opposition to the designation. The Commission has received a letter in support of the designation from the New York Landmarks Conservancy. The Commission previously held a public hearing on the American Telephone and Telegraph Company Building Interior (LP-1120) on March 11, 1980 (Item No. 13). Summary Planned by the noted architect William Welles Bosworth and built in phases between 1912 and 1922, the Greek-inspired first floor lobby of the American Telephone & Telegraph Company Building, with its forest of polished marble Doric columns, is one of the great monumental classical interiors in New York City.

This medal was worn with a neck ribbon as was custom- ary with Companions of the Medal of Honor Legion. The neck ribbon has the s~ne pattern as the suspension ribbon. In this instance the neck ribbon was inserted between the layers of the suspension ribbon. The pin clasp has been removed. Other medals belonging to Col.
