The text is in Japanese (or another similar foreign language) but it's easy to understand the menus. The gameplay is simple, you are a little anime girl on the bottom of the screen, your goal is to avoid the many cats that are falling from the sky while collecting tokens that also fall from the sky. For every cat that you avoid you get 1 point, and you get bonus points by collecting the tokens. I love the music, it's a catchy tune, but there's not too many sound effects, however the ones that are there work well and sound great without crackling. The feature in this game that really makes it stand out is the online ranking system! When your game ends you get a screen that has a password and a website to rank yourself among other players! At the time of this writing, my ranking is a dismal #144! Oh well, I'll keep trying!     Abstract The goal of this project is primarily to establish a collection of video games developed by companies based here in Massachusetts. In preparation for a proposal to the companies, information was collected from each company concerning how, when, where, and why they were founded. A proposal was then written and submitted to each company requesting copies of their games. With this special collection, both students and staff will be able to use them as tools for the IMGD program. 1 Introduction WPI has established relationships with Massachusetts game companies since the Interactive Media and Game Development (IMGD) program’s beginning in 2005. With the growing popularity of game development, and the ever increasing numbers of companies, it is difficult to establish and maintain solid relationships for each and every company. As part of this project, new relationships will be founded with a number of greater-Boston area companies in order to establish a repository of local video games. This project will not only bolster any previous relationships with companies, but establish new ones as well. With these donated materials, a special collection will be established at the WPI Library, and will include a number of retail video games. This collection should inspire more people to be interested in the IMGD program here at WPI. Knowing that there are many opportunities locally for graduates is an important part of deciding one’s major. I knew I wanted to do something with the library for this IQP, but I was not sure exactly what I wanted when I first went to establish a project.

    STANDARDIZED TOOLS AND THE GENERALIZABILITY OF HUMAN CAPITAL: THE IMPACT OF STANDARDIZED TECHNOLOGIES ON EMPLOYEE MOBILITY Milan Miric University of Southern California ([email protected]) Hakan Ozalp KIN Center for Digital Innovation, VU Amsterdam ([email protected]) Abstract The mobility of highly skilled knowledge and creative workers is an important determinant of innovation. Existing studies have not considered how the use and diffusion of standardized technologies and tools influence the mobility of individual knowledge workers. We theorize that the diffusion of standardized tools increases the generalizability of human capital and, in turn, increases the ability of individuals to move between companies. Using data on the use of middleware in the console games industry, we find that this diffusion of standardized middleware tools lead to an increase in labor mobility on average, but was associated with higher mobility for individuals with skills that complemented those tools, in comparison to those that were substituted by these tools. Worker experience with standardized tools amplified these effects, as individuals who were experienced in using these tools saw the largest shift in the likelihood of mobility. We do not find that this diffusion led to individuals leaving the industry, but we do find evidence that the diffusion of a common set of tools within an industry was associated with workers being less likely to leave that industry. These results highlight the potential unintended effects of technological standardization and the broad diffusion of standardized tools, which may enable workers to more easily shift between competitors. 1.
