  • 2020 Conservation Outlook Assessment
IUCN World Heritage Outlook: https://worldheritageoutlook.iucn.org/ Lake Baikal - 2020 Conservation Outlook Assessment Lake Baikal 2020 Conservation Outlook Assessment SITE INFORMATION Country: Russian Federation Inscribed in: 1996 Criteria: (vii) (viii) (ix) (x) Situated in south-east Siberia, the 3.15-million-ha Lake Baikal is the oldest (25 million years) and deepest (1,700 m) lake in the world. It contains 20% of the world's total unfrozen freshwater reserve. Known as the 'Galapagos of Russia', its age and isolation have produced one of the world's richest and most unusual freshwater faunas, which is of exceptional value to evolutionary science. © UNESCO SUMMARY 2020 Conservation Outlook Finalised on 07 Dec 2020 SIGNIFICANT CONCERN The conservation outlook of Lake Baikal is of concern because of ongoing pollution, as well as new emerging threats, such as large-scale tourism development, poor sewage treatment causing nearshore eutrophication, and climate change. The potential of hydroelectric developments on the Selenga and Orkhon Rivers in Mongolia, as well as the current temporary Regulation allowing a marked increase in range of lake water level fluctuations regulated by the Irkutsk Dam in Russia, are also of high concern. The decision to close the Baikalsk Paper and Pulp Mill has been a positive step, but its implementation and mitigation of past negative impacts will require time and significant efforts. Lack of progress in this regard to date is of concern. At the same time, the overall protection and management regime of the World Heritage site remains insufficient due to an inadequate legal framework and a fragmented and overcomplicated institutional setup.

The small economy of Olkhon Island, located within Lake Baikal, was soon dependent on a rapidly expanding tourism industry. Shamanism, the dominant religion on the island, and native Buryat culture were unlike anything the majority of tourists had ever experienced. Religious and cultural tourism soon became very popular, and very profitable. As there is currently very little research on the topic, this project aims to serve as a pilot examination of the impact of the tourism industry on shamanism and native Buryat culture.

Keeping the Eye of Siberia Luminous: Environmentalism on Lake Baikal in a Transitioning Society (1930-2013) Ingrid Korsgard May 2013 Russian Department Honors Advisor: Julia Chadaga Korsgard 2 Lake Baikal has been a source of life with deep spiritual meaning for the peoples of the region. However with the development of human communities around Baikal, the resources of the lake face danger of over-use. In the twentieth century when industrialization posed particular risks to the lake, citizens of the Baikal region rallied to protect their homeland. In so doing, these environmentalists had to work within the political system of the time. This research examines the ways in which environmentalists on Baikal carved out spaces for activism in the face of political turmoil and economic pressures. Tracing the evolution of environmentalism from the 1930s through the present day, this paper focuses on the transition from communism to capitalism from the 1980s to the 1990s.

  • Animate Landscapes: an Introduction Grounded in Examples from the Republic of Buryatia, Russian Federation1
Animate Landscapes: An Introduction grounded in examples from the Republic of Buryatia, Russian Federation1 Text: Justine Buck Quijada Photographs: Roberto Quijada Introduction: As we face the ongoing climate catastrophe and widespread environmental challenges, scholars, activists and the general public have taken an increased interest in the environmental ideas and practices of indigenous populations. The terms ‘animism’ and ‘animate landscape’ crop up in academic and other publications with increasing frequency, and yet few people in the environmental sciences community, or the general public, understand what this means. The physical sciences, growing primarily out of a European Enlightenment tradition, generally relate to physical matter as inanimate.2 This distinction between inanimate matter and animate humans and animals is the conceptual and grammatical basis underlying modernist scientific projects, not so much proven as presumed. It is often, therefore, extremely difficult for people educated within this tradition to wrap their minds around the idea of animate landscapes. My goal here is to illustrate what an animate landscape is for an audience of students and environmental scientists educated from within a Western post-Enlightenment perspective. The most important concept to take away from this essay is that an animate landscape is not a type of landscape, but rather the product of a relationship with a place. Mountains, grottos, rocks, rivers, lakes and other bodies of water, in short, any place can be an interlocutor in such a 1 This photo essay grew out of the year I spent as a fellow in the College of the Environment. My deepest thanks to Barry Chernoff, director of the College of the Environment, who invited me to participate, and to Antonio Machado- Allison, Helen Poulos, Marcela Oteiza, Fred Cohen, Isaac Kleinschmidt, Margaret O’Donnell and Fiona McLeod who participated in the College’s think tank, and whose intellectual companionship and stimulation made my reflection possible.

  • Baikal Winter 2009/Feb
On Lake Baikal Enchanted In Ice Journey Highlights: great journey on the ice of the Great Baikal by special hovercrafts highlighting introduction into the lake’s ecology and its ethnography, Pole of Baikal ceremony with famous Shaman of Baikal fun ice-fishing and Baikal “banya” steam-bath …with possible extension to Baikal Ice Marathon Duration: 9 days/ 08 nights, February 19 – March 01, 2019 Imagine a glistening, utterly smooth vein of milky quartz 395 miles long and 50 miles wide, set amid dense, mountainous forests: Baikal in winter. “A primordial deep lake of diamantine clarity,” as Peter Matthiessen wrote in Baikal: Sacred Lake of Siberia, it is, among other things, the world’s oldest lake and the deepest, at 5750 feet at its lowest, with an additional four miles of sediment above the bedrock. The great Baikal Rift—by far the deepest depression on the planet—is seven times as deep as the Grand Canyon. It is also the most voluminous, holding an astounding 20 percent of the world’s fresh water—if all the world’s rivers were to drain into an empty Baikal, it would take a year to fill. And, to cap off the superlatives, it’s unquestionably the most interesting, with its crystal clear water and 100,000 freshwater seals, called nerpa, that inhabit its northern waters, in the middle of a vast continent! Baikal is surely the most hugely beautiful lake in the solar system. “Baikal,” writes Yevgeny Yevtushenko, “is the blue heart of Siberia, pulsing amidst the green ocean of the taiga.” On this journey we’ll explore the lake in its bracingly cold solitude, visiting tiny wooden hamlets set by the shore, staying in boutique hotels and private homes, ice fishing, troika riding and perhaps even some dog-sledding, and of course walking joyously on the frozen surface of the world’s deepest and perhaps most ardently loved lake.

Attractive Natural Geological and Cultural-Historical Sites of the Baikal region (East Siberia) Preliminary program for field itinerary IEC SB RAS (Russia) : Tatiana Skovitina AGAI (Italy): Francesco Angelelli Siberia – Baikal – 2013 (24 July – 5 August) Note from site UNESCO: “…The Committee inscribed Lake Baikal as the most outstanding example of a freshwater ecosystem on the basis of natrual criteria (vii), (viii), (ix) and (x). It is the oldest and deepest of the world´s lakes containing nearly 20% of the world´s unfrozen freshwater reserve. The lake contains an outstanding variety of endemic flora and fauna, which is of exceptional value to evolutionary science. It is also surrounded by a system of protected areas that have high scenic and other natural values …”. http://whc.unesco.org/en/criteria/ Within this large geosite (Lake Baikal system) there are many smaller in scale, but very valuable geosites of Geomorphologic, Tectonic, Palaeogeographic, Landscape, Mineralogical, Petrographic, Hydrogeologic, Geocryologic, Geobotanic and Biologic, Geoarcheologic and other types. That allows considering such sites as attractive ones for scientific investigations and scientific geotourism. Besides, unique natural (including geological, geomorphological etc.) objects, Baikal region (Southern part of East Siberia) is famous for the rich multinational historical and cultural traditions which have developed for some centuries from the beginning of development of the Eastern Siberia territory. In Eastern Siberia for a winning new territories (XVII c.) it wasn't always necessary to resort to armed conflicts as lands was enough. Advance of the Russian colonists didn't remove aboriginals (Ostyakov, Buryats, Yakuts, Evenks, etc.) from their inhabited area. Therefore settlements, and together with them the cultural landscape of Eastern Siberia was and remains mixed.

Open Archaeology 2021; 7: 155–176 Research Article Irina Alexandrovna Ponomareva* Exploring the Cave Rock Art of Siberian Trans-Baikal: Fertility, Shamanism, and Gender https://doi.org/10.1515/opar-2020-0135 received October 1, 2020; accepted March 19, 2021 Abstract: The paper explores the phenomenon of rock art found in and around rock art cavities in Trans-Baikal region of South-East Siberia. Although many researchers noticed that caves have had a special value in cultures around the globe, no research has been carried out specifically into the cave rock art of Trans-Baikal which was not distinguished from other rock art found in open localities and shelters. This study was conducted based on field data collected by the author in 2017. In order to answer the question whether the cave sites had a specific role in the cultures of Bronze Age Trans-Baikal, the sets of motifs of the cave sites were compared to those of the closest open sites. Drawing on the stylistic difference revealed by the analysis and landscapecontext, itissuggestedthatthecaverockartsitescouldbeplaceswhereritualsofmorerestricted nature took place. Ethnographic records may imply that these ceremonies were aimed at the fertility increasing being performed by shamans or shamannesses or without their assistance. It is also possible that the ceremonies could be gender-exclusive, conducted only for women, although this interpretation needs further research. Keywords: Siberia, rock art, caves, Bronze Age 1 Introduction 1.1 Significance of the Cave Setting, the Definition of Cave, and the Novelty of the Research Around the world, caves were noticed to exhibit a special value in religious life of different societies and were places where various rituals were performed (see David, 2017; Moyes, 2012b).

  • Modern Forms of Buryat Shaman Activity on the Olkhon Island
Aleksandra Wierucka: Modern forms of Buryat shaman activity on the Olkhon Island Modern forms of Buryat shaman activity on the Olkhon Island Aleksandra Wierucka University of Gdansk, [email protected] Abstract Buryats live in Siberia. Their traditions are rapidly changing, but in some areas their traditional religion, shamanism, has survived. Even though it is influenced by globalisation, it still retains a quite strong position. Various shamanistic practices have been observed on Olkhon Island on Lake Baikal. These practices exist as the reaction to local people’s needs as well as to the demands of the modern world. Drawing on the fieldwork conducted in 2010, this article focuses on three forms of practicing shamanism: the first is mostly for tourists; the second is conducted via the shamans’ organisation; the third is practiced in small villages. All these forms portray the diversity of a modern shamanism that changes and seeks its place in a complex reality. KEYWORDS: Buryat shamanism, shamanistic practices, indigenous peoples of Siberia Introduction Shamanism has become a popular subject in recent decades (Narby & Huxley 2001: 4). There seems to be a lot of speculation about the “revival” of traditional shamanism and about the so-called neoshamanism (Townsend 2004: 49). Both of these phenomena are often confused. Nevertheless, knowledge about shamanism is not common. The practice is frequently considered a “satanic” act; however, shamanism has nothing in common with Christian view of diabolic activities. Many nations in the world practice shamanism. It is one of the oldest religious systems and, despite years of persecution of shamans and shamanists (adherents of shamanism), the foundations of the system has been preserved to this very day.
