PRESS CONTACTS: Tim Hallman Annie Tsang 415.581.3711 415.581.3560 [email protected] [email protected] SEDUCTION: JAPAN’S FLOATING WORLD Escape to Japan’s floating world through a selection of rare paintings, woodblock prints and kimonos at San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 13, 2015—Seduction: Japan's Floating World transports viewers to the popular and enticing entertainment districts established in Edo (present- day Tokyo) in the mid-1600s. Through more than 50 artworks from the acclaimed John C. Weber Collection, visitors can encounter the alluring realm known as the “floating world,” notably its famed pleasure quarter, the Yoshiwara. Masterpieces of painting, luxurious Japanese robes, woodblock-printed guides and decorative arts tell the story of how the art made to represent Edo’s seductive courtesans, flashy Kabuki actors and extravagant customs gratified fantasies and fueled desires. At a time when a strict social hierarchy regulated most aspects of the samurai and townsmen’s lives, the floating world provided a temporary escape. The term “floating world,” or ukiyo, originated from a common Buddhist phrase referring to the suffering of the physical world, which was inverted to signify a realm of boundless indulgence. Both a state of mind and a set of locales, the floating world refers to the diversions available in the brothel districts and Kabuki theaters of Edo, a city whose population had reached a million by the beginning of the 18th century. The floating world’s rise to prominence gave birth to an outpouring of new artistic production, in the form of paintings and woodblock prints that advertised celebrities and spread knowledge of the city’s famous theaters and brothels. -

Semiotica 2016; aop Massimo Leone* Nature and culture in visual communication: Japanese variations on Ludus Naturae DOI 10.1515/sem-2015-0145 Abstract: The neurophysiology of vision and cognition shapes the way in which human beings visually “read” the environment. A biological instinct, probably selected as adaptive through evolution, pushes them to recognize coherent shapes in chaotic visual patterns and to impute the creation of these shapes to an anthropomorphic agency. In the west as in the east, in Italy as in Japan, human beings have identified faces, bodies, and landscapes in the bizarre chromatic, eidetic, and topologic configurations of stones, clouds, and other natural elements, as though invisible painters and sculptors had depicted the former in the latter. However, culture-specific visual ideologies immediately and deeply mold such cross-cultural instinct of pattern recognition and agency attribution. Giants and mythical monsters are seen in clouds in the west as in the east; both the Italian seventeenth-century naturalist and the Japanese seventeenth-century painter identify figures of animals and plants in stones. And yet, the ways in which they articulate the semantics of this visual recogni- tion, identify its icons, determine its agency, and categorize it in relation to an ontological framework diverge profoundly, according to such exquisitely paths of differentiation that only the study of culture, together with that of nature, can account for. Special event preceding EAJRS Conference, Leiden, September 16-19, 2015 INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP “IMAGES OF WOMEN IN THE AGE OF MECHANICAL REPRODUCTION: PRINT CULTURE IN EARLY MODERN AND MODERN JAPAN” Tuesday, September 15, 2015, Leiden University Abstracts and Speakers’ Biographical Notes (in the order of appearance) Masato Naitō (Keio University) Harbingers of Modernity: Objective Portrayal of Women in ukiyo-e Many beauties were depicted in ukiyo-e, mainly in prints or on commercial objects that needed to appeal to potential buyers. As ukiyo-e was driven by consumer demand it is necessary to be cautious when analyzing it as a historical document of the Edo period. This presentation aims at a comparative study of two different ways of representing women in ukiyo-e: one that is considered typical and one that is atypical and as such heralds the coming modernity. Masato NAITŌ is Professor of Art History at Keio University and Director at Keio University Art Center (Tokyo). Formerly, he served as head curator at the Idemitsu Museum of Art (Tokyo). His research intrests focus on Edo period art and inlcude ukiyo-e as well as painting of the Rimpa and the Kanō school. His major publications include Ukiyo-e to patoron (Ukiyo-e and Its Patrons, Keio Univrestity Press, 2014), Katuskawa Shunshō to Tenmeiki no ukiyo-e bijinga (Katsukawa Shunshō and Images of Beautiful Women of the Tenmei Era, Tokyo University Press, 2012) and Rimpa Art (co-authored, British Museum, 1998) etc. Prof. Naito received the Kajima Foundation for the Arts Award in 1994 and the International Ukiyo-e Society Award in 2015. -

Extreme Japan At its roots, Japan has two deities who represent opposite extremes – Amaterasu, a Nigitama (peaceful spirit), and Susanoo, an Aratama (wrathful spirit). The dichotomy can be seen reflected in various areas of the culture. There is Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) to represent the Kitayama culture, and Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion) to represent the Higashiyama culture. Kabuki has its wagoto (gentle style) and aragoto (bravura style). There are the thatched huts of wabicha (frugal tea ceremony) as opposed to the golden tea ceremony houses. Japan can be punk – flashy and noisy. Or, it can be bluesy – deep and tranquil. Add to flash, the kabuki way. Subtract to refine, the wabi way. Just don’t hold back - go to the extreme.Either way, it’s Japan. Analyzing the Outrageous: Takehara Shunchōsai’S Shunga Book Makura Dōji Nukisashi Manben Tamaguki (Pillow Book for the Young, 1776)
Japan Review 26 Special Issue Shunga (2013): 169–93 Analyzing the Outrageous: Takehara Shunchōsai’s Shunga Book Makura dōji nukisashi manben tamaguki (Pillow Book for the Young, 1776) C. Andrew GERSTLE This article examines the book Makura dōji nukisashi manben tamaguki (1776) with illustrations by Takehara Shunchōsai in the context of a sub-genre of shunga books—erotic parodies of educational textbooks (ōrai- mono)—produced in Kyoto and Osaka in the second half of the eighteenth century. A key question is whether we should read this irreverent parody as subversive to the political/social order, and if so in what way. Different from the erotic parodies by Tsukioka Settei, which focused mostly on women’s conduct books, this work is a burlesque parody of a popular educational anthology textbook used more for boys. It depicts iconic historical figures, men and women, courtiers, samurai and clerics all as ob- sessed with lust, from Shōtoku Taishi, through Empresses and Kōbō Daishi to Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The article considers whether recent research on Western parody as polemic is relevant to an analysis of this and other Edo period parodies. The article also considers the view, within Japanese scholarship, on the significance of parody (mojiri, yatsushi, mitate) in Edo period arts. The generation of scholars during and immediately after World War II, such as Asō Isoji (1896–1979) and Teruoka Yasutaka (1908–2001) tended to view parody and humor as a means to attack the Tokugawa sys- tem, but more recent research has tended to eschew such interpretations. The article concludes by placing this work among other irreverent writing/art of the 1760s–1780s, in both Edo and Kyoto/Osaka, which was provocative and challenged the Tokugawa system. -

The monarch and court continued to maintain rites and rituals in Kyoto aimed at ensuring good harvests and fending off epidemics and natural disasters, while the Tokugawa line and their allies established a military administration in Edo (now Tokyo), a newly established city lying roughly 495 kilometres to the east of Kyoto.
