The battle for Shanghai This One Chinese Regiment Took on an Entire Japanese Army The battle for Shanghai became a slaughterhouse, a stalemate that conjured memories of Verdun and the Somme. by Warfare History Network On October 27, 1937, the Zhabei district of Shanghai began to burn, an enormous conflagration that stretched for five miles and filled the northern horizon from end to end, almost as far as the eye could see. The orange-yellow flames greedily consumed buildings and their contents, finishing the destruction already begun after three months of intense fighting between the Chinese and Japanese armies. Thick coils of smoke reached 3,000 feet into the air, obscuring the skies of central China. It was a spectacle never to be forgotten by those who witnessed it—the funeral pyre of a great city. Some of the fires came from the fighting, but most had been deliberately set to cover the Chinese Army’s retreat. The outnumbered Chinese had resisted gallantly, but many units now were reduced to mere shadows of themselves. When word came that the Japanese had gained ground outside the city and were threatening the Chinese flank, there was no other choice but to withdraw. One unit was deliberately left behind, entrenched around a concrete warehouse just opposite the International Settlement. The officers and men of the 524th Regiment, 88th Division, knew only too well that their mission was suicidal, that they were being sacrificed to showcase Chinese courage, but they accepted their fate stoically. Their ordeal, which had started on October 26, would continue for another four days of brutal fighting, and the defense of Sihang Warehouse would rivet the attention of the world, with the American press quickly dubbing it “the Chinese Alamo.” The Impromptu Sino-Japanese War of 1937 The Sino-Japanese War of 1937 had begun in a haphazard manner. -

The long-term participants are mainly gay men, with several lesbian women, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and heterosexual people. The community, whilst accessible by anyone via a registered screen ID name, operates like a private club. As a part of this community from its beginning in 2000, I am interested in the community in this particular location, not least because of my own affiliation with Taiwan, but because of the cultural specificity of Taiwan as non-Western and yet Westernised. My research methodology is based on approaches inspired by ethnography. I observe the dynamics, participate in the community, collect data, and visit online and offline sites to formulate ideas in relation to both the inside and outside of the community. I use knowledge and experience gained from my interaction with the Spiteful Tots participants and with the wider Taiwanese society. I locate the community within the culture of contemporary Taiwan, utilising and critiquing previous literature on the politics of sexuality, gender theories, and critical analyses of heteronormativity. My findings are: a) the Spiteful Tots participants carefully negotiate ways of maintaining privacy within the group, and do not ‘come out’ in recognised LGBT ways; b) the Spiteful -

Engendering Children of the Resistance: Models for Gender and Scouting in China, 1919–1937 Margaret Mih Tillman, Purdue University Abstract In the 1920s and 1930s, Chinese adapted scouting, which had originally been developed to masculinize British youth as future colonial troops. While Chinese families and teachers valued scouting as a form of outdoor recreation, Chiang Kai-shek and the Guomindang after 1927 connected scouting to preparation for military training. In addition to fostering masculinity among boys, the Chinese Scouting Association also directed Girl Scouts with new models of patriotic girlhood. The Guomindang promoted the distinct femininity of the Girl Scouts and channeled girls’ patriotism into nursing. As China entered World War II, Girl Scouts became significant symbols of patriotism in an increasingly militarized children’s culture. The Guomindang showcased Yang Huimin, a Girl Scout and heroine in the Battle of Sihang Warehouse, as a spokesperson for the Nationalist cause, but it could not fully control her public image. Keywords: Girl Scouts, scouting, gender roles, China, World War II On the cover of the 1926 issue of Children’s World, a young Chinese boy salutes girls who are marching in step (figure 1). With rounded features and swinging movements, the children appear almost doll-like in an idyllic setting on the cover of this magazine for elite children. The children don scouting uniforms, and the boy carries the long stick typically used by Boy Scouts. This image raises questions about the militarization of children’s culture in the politically tense environment of the 1920s. Would child’s play retreat to an imaginary garden or confront an approaching war front? Could girls and boys salute each other in a shared youth culture, or would they march separately along a gender divide? This article explores the ways in which the Chinese Scouting Association aimed to prepare children for the realities of war by promoting heroes and creating rituals in the years leading to the Second Sino-Japanese War. -
