Clark work: Andrea Mantegna, Adoration of the Magi, c. 1495-1505, 48.6 x 65.6 cm, distemper on linen, The Getty Museum, Los Angeles In this short film, Dr Leah Clark discusses the global dimensions of a painting by the Renaissance court artist Andrea Mantegna. There are a variety of activities to get students thinking about close-looking around a Renaissance painting. There are also different themes that you can use to tease out some of the main issues the film raises: visual analysis of a painting; the Italian Renaissance’s relationship to the larger world; collecting practices in the Renaissance; diplomacy and gift giving; cross-cultural exchanges; devotional paintings; the court artist. http://www.openartsarchive.org/resource/open-arts-object-mantegna-adoration-magi-c-1495-1505-getty- museum-la Before watching the film Before watching the film, locate the work online and download an image of the work here that you can use to show to your class. On the Identity of Some Musicians At The Brescian Court of Pandolfo III Malatesta * By Allan Atlas Although the Brescian court of Pandolfo III Malatesta was relatively short-lived and generally plagued by political difficulties, and though Bres cia at the beginning of the 15th century was as short on an artistic heritage of the first rank as the Malatesta were on the resources to foster such a tradi tion, the signoria over which Pandolfo III presided in that Lombard city from 1404 to 1421 enjoyed a surprisingly distinguished cultural life, especially in the field of music.' Himself a man of letters who commanded Latin, French, and Proven<;al, Pandolfo took a first-hand interest in the literary life of his court, collecting a respectable library, supporting a small but important group ofBrescian writ ers-among them Jacopo Malvezzi, Giovanni da Borgo San Donnino, and perhaps Bartolomeo Baiguera-and writing Latin verses of his own, accom plishments that earned for him the praise of the soldier-poet Ludovico Can tello (his secretary) and the well-known humanist Francesco Filelfo.' In the visual arts, Pandolfo's Brescia always enjoyed the talents ofa number oflocal artists, especially Bartolino Testorino,3 while the period 1414-1419 wit nessed the presence at the court of Gentile da Fabriano, whom Pandolfo commissioned to execute a fresco in a chapel of the Broletto, the 13th-century palace in which Pandolfo lived and in which Sigismondo Pandolfo was born inJune 1417'- Despite these achievements, it was through his support of music that Pan dolfo played perhaps his most significant role as a patron of the arts.

The unprecedented economic expansion in major Italian cities and concomitant spread of humanistic culture and philosophy gave rise to what has come to be called the Renaissance, a complex and multifaceted movement embracing a wide range of intellectual developments. This course will treat the artistic production of the Italian city-republics in the late Duecento, Trecento and early Quattrocento, with particular emphasis on panel and fresco painting in Siena, Florence, Rome and Venice. The Early Italian Renaissance will be considered within its historical, political and social context, beginning with the careers of Duccio di Buoninsegna and Giotto di Bondone, progressing through the generation of Gentile da Fabriano, Filippo Brunelleschi and Masaccio, and concluding with the era of Leon Battista Alberti and Piero della Francesca. INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHY Dr. Grossman earned his B.A. in Art History and English at the University of California- Berkeley, and his M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Art History at Columbia University. After seven years of residence in Tuscany, he completed his dissertation on the civic architecture, urbanism and iconography of the Sienese Republic in the Middle Ages and Early Renaissance.

  • A Case Study of Merchant Patronage in Early Sixteenth-Century Burgos
PIETY AND THE MERCHANT PATRON: A CASE STUDY OF MERCHANT PATRONAGE IN EARLY SIXTEENTH-CENTURY BURGOS A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Emily Diana Reineck Kelley May 2010 © 2010 Emily Diana Reineck Kelley PIETY AND THE MERCHANT PATRON: A CASE STUDY OF MERCHANT PATRONAGE IN EARLY SIXTEENTH-CENTURY BURGOS Emily Diana Reineck Kelley, Ph. D. Cornell University 2010 Beginning in the late Middle Ages and continuing into the early modern period, merchants throughout western Europe became influential members of the growing middle class, and with this growing wealth and influence also came artistic patronage. Although the patronage of merchants from other areas of the western world, specifically Italy and Northern Europe, has been studied in some detail, the examination of merchant patrons from Iberia, and specifically Castile, has been largely neglected. Accordingly, this study offers unprecedented analysis of the funerary altarpiece commissioned at the turn of the sixteenth century by the Castilian merchant Gonzalo López de Polanco for the high altar of the parish church of San Nicolás de Bari in Burgos, Spain. Through the analysis of this altarpiece, this project examines the devotional life and social aspirations of the merchant patron as well as the function of the altarpiece in its original location, doing so through the consideration of contemporary liturgical and devotional texts as well as the patron’s testament. Moreover, this study addresses how this altarpiece compares to others commissioned by merchant, noble, ecclesiastical and royal patrons in Burgos around the turn of the sixteenth century, a time when Castilian attitudes toward religious devotion were changing due to increased contact with the rest of Europe and the importation of various religious texts under Ferdinand and Isabel.

  • The Adoration of the Magi
The Adoration of the Magi Gentile da Fabriano (c. 1370 – c. 1427) The Adoration of the Magi This talk is based on two (2) articles / reflections in the The Sower magazine (October – December 2007) by Lionel Gracey and and Caroline Farey. The Adoration of the Magi Gentile da Fabriano (c. 1370 – c. 1427) was an Italian painter known for his participation in the International Gothic style. Gentile was born in or near Fabriano, in the Marche. His mother died some time before 1380 and his father, Niccolò di Giovanni Massi, retired to a monastery in the same year, where he died in 1385. He worked in various places in central Italy, mostly in Tuscany. His best known works are his Adoration of the Magi (1423) and Flight into Egypt. The Adoration of the Magi About 1422 he went to Florence, where in 1423 he painted an "Adoration of the Magi" as an altarpiece for the church of Santa Trinita, which is now preserved in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. This painting is considered his best work now extant and regarded as one of the masterpieces of the International Gothic style. He had by this time attained a wide reputation, and was engaged to paint pictures for various churches, more particularly Siena, Perugia, Gubbio and Fabriano. The Adoration of the Magi About 1426 he was called to Rome by Pope Martin V to adorn the church of St. John Lateran with frescoes from the life of John the Baptist. He also executed a portrait of the pope attended by ten cardinals, and in the church of St.

  • Visualizing and Measuring Gold Leaf in Fourteenth
MacLennan et al. Herit Sci (2019) 7:25 https://doi.org/10.1186/s40494-019-0271-0 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Visualizing and measuring gold leaf in fourteenth- and ffteenth-century Italian gold ground paintings using scanning macro X-ray fuorescence spectroscopy: a new tool for advancing art historical research Douglas MacLennan1*, Laura Llewellyn2, John K. Delaney3, Kathryn A. Dooley3, Catherine Schmidt Patterson1, Yvonne Szafran2 and Karen Trentelman1 Abstract The size, shape, and application techniques of gold leaf in fourteenth- and ffteenth-century gold ground panel paint- ings attributed to artists working in Florence, Siena, and Fabriano was directly visualized using in situ scanning macro X-ray fuorescence spectroscopy (MA-XRF). The resulting gold (Au) Lα (9.712 keV) element distribution maps are of sufcient spatial resolution to enable an accurate and reproducible measurement of the shape and size of individual gold leaves. The resulting leaf measurements are discussed in the context of historical guild regulations, in particular, the 1403 reforms to the statutes of the Florentine Guild of Doctors and Apothecaries (Arte dei medici e speziale), which standardized the dimensions of gold leaf produced in Florence. The dimensions of the gold leaf from Florentine paintings created before and after the 1403 reforms were compared to each other as well as to gold ground paintings created in Siena and Fabriano. The results revealed the gold leaf squares in fourteenth-century Florentine and Sienese panels had side lengths averaging about 8 cm. In contrast, the gold leaf squares used in the ffteenth-century Floren- tine and Sienese paintings were smaller, with side lengths measuring about 7 cm.

  • Light Symbolism in Gentile Da Fabriano's Vatican Annunciation
Lasse HODNE, Light Symbolism in Gentile da Fabriano’s Vatican Annunciation Light Symbolism in Gentile da Fabriano’s Vatican Annunciation Simbolismo de la luz en la Anunciación de Gentile da Fabriano en la Pinacoteca Vaticana Lasse HODNE Norwegian University of Science and Technology [email protected] Recibido: 31/10/2014 Aceptado: 10/11/2014 Abstract: Gentile da Fabriano’s Annunciation in the Vatican Pinacoteca is one of the clearest and most interesting visualizations of a famous metaphor from Medieval hymn literature that compares Mary’s hymen to the glass of a window. The painting uniquely combines three elements: rays of light, a Gothic tracery window, and the shape of the window impressed on the Virgin’s body. Gentile’s painting is the culmination of a development in Tuscan art that can be traced back at least until about 1370. This makes it part of an Italian tradition of visualizing the so-called ut vitrum metaphor that must antedate analogous examples from Flemish art. Key words: Gentile da Fabriano, Annunciation, ut vitrum, iconography.
